Doug's Journal of Shaving Happiness v2.0

I have really enjoyed these reviews on the blades! Thank you!

Thanks. I may do more stuff like this in the future.

That 1305 will start producing better lathers once breaking in more.

I realized once I saw what was going on in my shave mug that I needed to clean the brush before trying again to use it. I am looking forward to taking a few weeks to break it in right. If it is anything like the SOC it will be a great performer.

Equal with the Astra? That's a great blade for sure!

I had the same issues with my Semogue 830 when I first got it...but now it's a lathering machine!

Yeah, those new brushes can really soak up some water and sometimes there is something on the bristles. Maybe a wash is in hand, but I wouldn't over do it. The best broken in brush, is when you break it by lathering in my opinion.

Overview
It was a shave of firsts for me. My first time shaving with a non-American made straight. It was my first shave with a Swedish straight. It was my first shave with a razor not honed by Larry Andro.

Shave Quality
The lather was off still due to the newness of the boar, but it worked. I think the shave would have been better had the lather been good. The shave was still really good. The edge was smooth and mild. The razor did a bit of stopping and skipping. I chalk this up to bad lather. After three passes I was DFS+ on my cheeks and CCS on my neck; and only one nick during the third pass. I expect things will get better as the brush breaks in and as I shave with this more. I didn't strop the razor before the shave since it was fresh from being honed by Dave (Xeno). I gave it 30 linen and 30 leather afterwards.

Thanks again for honing this, Dave.

Gear
The C. V. Heljestrand is a quality piece of steel. It is a bit heavier than my other razors. It also has a very different feel. There is a different quality to the steel. I like it.

Other Thoughts
I really hope that the order I placed this week with West Coast Shaving gets here quickly.

Thank you for reading and commenting on my journal. I hope you have a great day and stellar shaves, Cadre.

Thanks.

I shampooed it and washed it with some Ivory soap last night. Today it had lost the barnyard smell and it definitely lathered better. From now on it will only touch shaving soap. Now for the weeks of break-in time.

If you want to learn the lessons of pressure and angle definitely try a G-Type Injector (or possibly an E-Type Injector). If you don't use a careful and light touch these things will rough you up and leave you bleeding. After three careful, light, thoughtful passes today I am almost dolphin smooth with very little residual irritation. I thought I was going to have more, but the ASB really calmed things down. This was my first use of the B&M Latha. It is good stuff. The 1305 whipped up a great lather that was decently slick and protective. It was a great shave.

'Jectah! I forget what kind of blade it has and how many shaves.

Latha Oceana is good performing soap and I really like the scent.

I hope everyone is having a great weekend.

I forgot to note that the full tub of Latha with lid weighed 152 grams. Let's see how long it lasts.

Getting caught up from the weekend. Nice couple of shaves. Injectah and a razor honed by Dave. Doesn't get much better than that!

In my house, probably 8 1/2 years

I load at around 2 grams per shave, so I should get around 76 shaves out of it.

Okay, so that would be 15 years. I just don't use one particular soap more than 1-3 times a months I would guess.

Decided to go "old school" this morning and put a black carbon steel Treet in one of my OLD Types.

DFS+/BBS- with a tiny bit of residual irritation after two passes. Great Latha lather. The blade was sharp and smooth. It was a good shave.

Gear
I love these blades, but I don't use them often enough. They are sharp, smooth, and easi
er on the face than many stainless blades. They do take extra maintenance, however. They need to be patted dry after the shave. They do better on subsequent shaves if they are palm stropped. But when they are (which they always are for the first shave) on the results are great.

Other Thoughts
Mondays... bleh.

All you have to do is commit to using one until it is gone. (There is a term for that over at the other place that I won't use here.) It is something I enjoy. The first few shaves dial it in, then it is good shaves until the tub is empty.

Also, load it like you hate it.

Nice old-time shave today Doug! I missed the boat with the Latha line of soaps from B&M unfortunately, but have heard good things about them.

I was way behind Doug, but caught up now.

Loved the side by side comparison!
My 1st impression of the Parker blade that you sent to me is favorable.

Some great shaves and reads!
