Regarding virtual schooling. I switched my daughters to a virtual school 2 years ago so this whole debacle had no impact on their schooling other than canceling the many planned in-person events AND prom, grad-night and graduation for my older daughter. The purposefully designed virtual schools normally include plenty of field trips and there are a number of localized parent meet-ups to allow a lot of the social aspects. Of course NOW those are on hold and certainly going to be modified but since the schooling and social/physical are normally separate concerns they can be dealt with separately going forward. In my girls case they both excelled and had plenty of meaningful interaction with the teachers (pleural, they had multiple teachers but one primary touch point) and even had direct phone calls as they felt necessary. Again, my kids were able to devote a lot of time to school and completed tasks well in advance of when they were due so they Were able to keep going ahead instead of waiting on the “classroom” to catch up.
A good virtual school can be a good fit for a family, especially if your family has someone at home to act as a surrogate teacher/teacher’s aid. My kids had become able to self start and follow a schedule but having a parent/teacher there to work along side them and offer assistance and guidance on the spot is a great enhancement.
Education and the merits of different styles of delivery is another subject that gets people all lathered up...so many opinions and facts thrown around. We all have an interest in a well educated society but in the end the clock keeps ticking and all that matters is how YOUR child fairs.
