Chad's adventures of shaving, officiating, and life

I'm still trying to process everything but I need to put this out there to help me.

So this evening I was asked to run to the store to grab something. So I drove to the local Wal mart which is maybe 1 mile away. While walking out of the store I climbed into my car set bag on the seat, started the car, and then plugged my phone in. At this moment I heard a woman and man screaming. I jumped out of my car thinking someone had been ran over.

Much to my surprise the woman had an arrow that entered in her upper thigh and poking out above her knee cap. People everywhere in the parking lot started hiding and going prone. The woman screaming in pain and the husband in shock. I called 911, grabbed towels out of my trunk and stated to try and keep this woman calm while assessing the wound and hoping she wasn't going to die in front of me.

For what felt like forever now looking at my phone it seems I was on the phone for 9 min until police arrived and I was allowed off the phone. The officers had to ensure it wasn't an active shooter situation. Which was determined quickly. Then the ambulance came in and in what was maybe 40 sec they had the woman loaded up and on her way to the hospital. Then the police began investigation. I was cleared to leave.

Still shaken up a bit and thanking God that if I had walked out 20 sec later I probably would have been the one shot.

The police believe this was someone doing target practice and was an errant shot. I hope there was no malice and I hope this woman survives.

First of all...I am glad everyone made it out alive (or it seems from your account). Second...I am glad you where not hurt. Finally, I am proud that you had your wits about you and was able to provide aid and comfort.

These days it seems that no one is able or interested in helping others. There were probably a dozen people or so that chose not to help. We all have our own families to protects and issues to deal with...so I don't want to judge too harshly, but it just seems like in this day, people are more concerned about themselves than helping their fellow man or woman.

Proud of you Chad!

Well damn dude! Glad you were there to assist and kept a cool head!

Glad you’re OK!

Jeez hope the lady recovers, pretty scary man!

Wow! Good job providing aid, hope she is ok.

Guys thanks for your thoughts and posts. I wasn't posting trying to get praise honestly just the adrenaline had worn off and I was honestly freaking out... It could have been me.

As to the fight or flight responses it was surreal seeing how people reacted. One person was more worried about going into the store and checking the cameras right away. And of course all the people hiding. Myself I wasn't ready to watch someone die in front of me.

I'm thankful to the first responders. And since our neighborhood is up against the believed field where the arrow was shot from that is up against the Wal mart parking lot I did post a brief synopsis of what happened there in hopes someone knew or saw something and could help the police. This morning someone posted back that their yard is up against the field and the police where talking to someone. Hopefully they found the person responsible.

As to the woman I hope she is okay. I feel pretty confident that she should survive based off looking back now and where the arrow was and thank God it wasn't a hunting tip. I wonder if I call the police precinct tomorrow if they could at least say the woman is okay?

Any ways no need for praise, fight or flight is an interesting beast, and you never know when it's your turn.

Praise isn't needed...I get that...but you did the right thing...and that makes you a pretty damn good human being in my book.

Situations like this one illustrate that everyone should be prepared to handle all sorts of situations. I believe that all people need to take a basic first aid class. I might also suggest taking a "Stop the Bleed Class" if available. Outside of CPR, being able to apply a tourniquet and apply pressure to stop severe bleeding is probably one of the most important things you can do.

Thanks Chad for sharing. I hope others learn from your experience.

I am certified in CPR probably need a refresher honestly. And have taken basic first aid. Her wound wasn't bleeding profusely. Iwas mainly keeping her standing leaning against a truck and trying to keep her calm. I am sure once at the hospital and they remove the arrow that's when the bleeding started. Her instinct was the pull the arrow out... Clearly that could have been real bad if she did that.

Darn.....I was about to order a cape for you because you're a Hero!! That takes some guts to run toward the scene and not hide like most would.

Here's how I picture you around the house from now on.....

Seriously thou.....good on ya for keeping a calm head during what must have been a very scary moment.

@mvargo don't you have a viideo of Chad in his cape, as I understand it he wears it ALL the time.

You now have to attempt to top your heroics.....next time you need to dive and catch the arrow before it hits anyone.....preferably in slow motion.
