Brew's Foul Concoction

I like the Veg but find it impossible to wear during the hot summer.
Wait, . . . what? How could lilac be impossible to wear in the summer? Around here, you know summer is in full swing when your morning run is infused with honeysuckle and lilac.

It’s the VeGetal part that doesn’t pair well with temps over 100. Could be the combination of rendering human fat and the Veg that is the problem. I can handle it but judging by the amount of personal space I am granted as I walk through crowds I assume others object to the scent of CBL and the Veg in summer heat.

I work from home. I have no problem experimenting with fragrances. I enjoy it. I have a hand full of oud samples on the way. It's been a while since I've ordered new oils, I can't wait to see if I've picked any that warrant full bottle purchases. I rarely splurge for a whole bottle, it's just outlandishly expensive. Happy to send some oud samples your way, Chris, if you're interested?

Did I mention, I like oud?

Note to self: If you're going to experiment with fragrance blind buys, do it one spritz at a time. Shalimar is a bull horn of a fragrance that can easily fill a room and suffocate the inhabitants. But one spray and some quiet time alone to dry (lol) yields a gorgeous fragrance that just warmly wafts up from my tee shirt as I move about. Like Jicky, this one goes great with Tabac. I've been doing a bit more reading on-line about the fragrance. When asked if a man can wear Shalimar, women say yes, absolutely; men, not so much. I'm in the yes camp, but this I can see how Joe Baggadonuts might not dig it.

I have a room full of oils my wife barely tolerated as it is (and I barely know how to use), I’ll pass on the Oud oils...but I’ve heard great things about your collection and love of oud.

I’ve made spent $100-$200 for 20 grams of a couple different Atars to make soap, one was Rosa Bourbonia and the other a Mysore sandalwood. The Rosa Bourbonia was wonderful but I haven’t made the sandalwood yet, I just mixed a little with alcohol and dropped it onto the surface of my vintage C&E Mysore soap. Quality oils are a thing of wonder.

funny you mention shalamar, I was just looking at that the other day. It used to be quite popular “back in the day” but I never smelled it. It popped up when I was searching for Jicky.

I keep reading where you guys are comparing scents and notes with others and I just keep thinking BUT WHAT'S IT SMELL LIKE!?!?
My ignorance keeps me from buying a lot of things because I dont know if I will like it. Reading the profiles doesn't help because i dont k ow what most of the stuff is.

Shalimar was a heavy hitter when I was in high school, other than White Shoulders, my mom's favorite, it was one of the few fragrances I knew by name, before I got into the hobby recently.

I was reading a lot of Guerlain reviews a while back, and was surprised to see that nowadays Shalimar can easily work for men. Styles change.

Samples, my friend, samples! Buy a couple you've heard of, read a bit about them, see if you like them and then see if you can find some others that are similar, if you do. I used to get my samples here: Perfume Samples, Perfume Decants, Indie Perfumes, Scents and Vintage Perfumes

Real nice shave with the CBL outlaw soap today. I gather this is a Stetson-like fragrance, but I'm not familiar with that cologne. I just smell leather, and lots of it. I intended to follow it up with some Clubman SR, but I was so take with the leathery smell, I ditched the SR in favor of English Leather, and finished with some Tiffany for Men. After the Tiffany dried a bit I thought, "This is almost a male version of Shalimar." A bit of poking around on the internet and I found that I'm not the first to have thought this. Also learned that Habit Rouge was designed by Guerlain to be just that, the male version of Shalimar. I'll have to give it a try too.

I am really enjoying the CBL soaps. I haven't used soaps in quite a while before these. I don't think they'll switch me back, but I won't avoid using them. The Black Rose Oud is my favorite so far. I think the fragrance is very sophisticated for a soap. I don't mean to belittle soap smell, and I don't think the cream fragrances are any more sophisticated, but I typically am not wowed or intrigued by this vehicle for delivering interesting smells. This BRO is very interesting to me, but I wonder how many repeat purchases Chris gets (No need to respond, Chris, if you're reading this. I should mind my own business . . . . ). This one may be a bit challenging to some.

I am happy to hear you are enjoying the CBL soaps, BRO is one the scents I consider a flagship CBL scent even though It isn't as popular among the masses as i would like it to be ...yet. I will definitely be making it in tonsorial as well as restocking it in the premium base but it may not be a big player in the long run just because the fragrance oils are difficult to get (it takes a long time to get because it comes from a magical land far far away). The Outlaw scent is indeed a stetson based scent, stetson is a described by those who describe scents as a chypre type scent...you got me, it smell like stetson to me. My personal favorites are the BRO and Orange Dirt (Terre D'hermes), i really enjoy those scents.

FYI, I had been doing a pretty good job of avoiding wet shaving purchases for a year or two before I joined TSC. I even put a healthy dent in my shaving cream backlog. That seems to be changing, between the soaps, some new frags, and now I'm even thinking about a new brush or two* . . . .

*Boar suggestions appreciated!

Brush, then Stirling Boar is loved and on my radar. For a Boar knot to put in your handle, Whipped dog gets the nod but I have no experience with yet.

I agree with both. I have two Whipped Dog knots and I love them both. 24mm and 30mm.
