beginish’s Eye on a Splintered Mind

This week I’ve started the battle against my covid 30 (the average weight gain since the start of the pandemic). At least I’m not wildly outside the norm (in the bad way). This was the very rapid reversal of 18 months of hard work to lose 20. Like so many of us, despite working from home and seemingly having more time to exercise, the opposite happened.

I tried to tackle this in late January, but Mother Nature felt otherwise, so here we are starting again. The first week of the 8 week Couch to 5K program is complete.

I’ve had enough of the vintage Vulfix boar. Tips are kinda-sorta splitting, but it’s not giving me the face lather experience that a current Omega or Semogue delivers. Life being too short, back to the box with it. Out comes the beast-of-a Simpson 59 for the next week or two. Monday’s shave was pure luxury.

The grocery store had a display of travel sizes Thayer’s face tonic on sale for $2.95, so I picked up a bottle of the unscented version to use as a first coat before applying the Floïd Blue. I must say, the tonic is good stuff. Thanks @dkeester for inspiring the purchase!

I'm still super bitter they discontinued the medicated splash - it was an absolute staple in my den. Might have to try the unscented.

My jar of TOBS has bitten the dust. Excellent performance as usual, and I liked the scent (which was only recently introduced). Tomorrow I start on the last Trumper soap in my den, a brand new puck of Violet purchased in 2012. It’s unopened and been wrapped in wax paper since purchase, so the scent is there. Violet cream outperforms the soap by a wide margin, but it’s what I have! It should do very nicely for spring/summer. I plan to use the badgers and boars, but reserve the right to go synthetic if lathering is difficult. I had to do that when I used my previous Trumper soap, a puck of Rose, because it ain’t that easy to lather.

Two weeks coming up with this gem, a Somerset Simpson Rover in Pure. This was part of one of the most fun hunts I’ve had in this hobby, which culminated in finding a source of NIB Somersets that were acquired as part of the David Carter sale of Simpson.

Plugging along with Trumper Violet soap, getting consistently decent shaves. A+ for scent. The Simpson Berkeley has been a really great performer the last week or so. It truly is an underrated brush. I am also approaching the end of a 400 ml bottle of Floïd Blue, which I have had since 2011 and been using daily for the better part of 2 years. I won’t miss it when it’s gone. Thank God I have a bottle of Booster Polar Ice for a change of pace.

An update on my ‘No More’ effort as well. I’ve managed to significantly up my activity level this last month and it’s paid dividends. Prior to starting I got on the scale and confirmed the damage of 34 lbs gained during the pandemic. After a month of couch to 5K and a concerted effort to just move more, I’ve dropped 6 pounds.

A truly epic accomplishment! Worthy of a book series perhaps? There is Floid Again: A Bob’s Tale.
