beginish’s Eye on a Splintered Mind

I had shaved with the BebeLush Bay Rum a couple of times before and recall that it was fine. First time today with a 3017 of the soap and it was good. Easy to whip up, rich stable lather and reasonably slick. The scent is at best a meh for me, as it’s a bay rum with clove and orange. Fortunately, clove takes a back seat and it’s very orange forward, but 6 years since purchase, it has dissipated a bit. We’ll see how it goes.

One week in and the soap is performing well, a solid 2 out of 3 *** on my bad-average-excellent scale. In some ways, performance is better than the Trumper I just finished. In others, not close. I already have put a big dent in the soap, so it won’t last long.

With 70 degree temps forecast here in November, I’m sticking with Floïd Blue as my AS awhile longer. Normally, I would switch over to a balm by this time of year (it will be Lucky Tiger when I switch). Not having to leave the house and warm temps outside anyway mean that there is no driving force to switch. I have half a bottle of Floïd left, so I can keep putting a dent in it.

Relief. That’s what I’m feeling right now. Nothing life changing, but after banging my head against a wall with the triple milled soaps, it’s nice to use one and see steady progress toward the bottom of the tin.

As I posted in the Bottom of a Ton thread in the Soap/Cream forum, I don’t have more than two shaves left in my tin of BebeLush Bay Rum. The shaves have been fine, but I will not miss the scent AT ALL. I’m breaking out my brand new tube of TOBS St James cream to take me through the holidays and into the New Year.

I last used it 3-4 years ago, when I was finishing all of my creams for fear of them going bad. The scent is fantastic, and for awhile, I wished TOBS put out a soap in that scent. That said, I get much better scent delivery from creams, so I'm content to settle for the cream. TOBS Jermyn Street soap is top notch in my book, so I know they could make it work if they wanted to, but it seems to me that given the overall decline in soap performance since the 3 T's (and Floris and Penhaligons) ditched their tallow-based formulas lo these many years ago, you will get your traditional English shaving experience with a pot of their stellar creams.

TOBS St James has been nothing short of excellent. I have thoroughly enjoyed the last month’s shaves. Easy lathering, great scent. What more could I ask for? I should be using this cream into the better part of January. It’s in a tube, so I have easy control of snurdle size.
