beginish’s Eye on a Splintered Mind

Of all of the citrus scents, Cyril Salter's Sublime Citrus cream has the most unique, IMHO. It's very strong on the grapefruit, with some lemon underneath, and the performance of that cream is outstanding. I almost want to go order a tub just thinking about it. *almost*

The lemon cream single handedly kicked all soaps to the curb for me for about 2 years.
Shannon's Soaps has a Lavender/Lemongrass soap that is predominantly lemon. I love it so much that I purchased Myrsol Lemon splash to pair with it.

As a 3017 use one soap at a time guy, on any given day, I don’t have much to look forward to, shaving wise. I know what soaps I have and that none are forthcoming any time soon. I have 3 bottles of AS, and those take forever. That one is a 400 ml bottle of Floïd Blue means I won’t need a warm weather AS for a few years. The back up is 250 ml of Booster Polar Ice, so, um, you can do the math.

But I do have something to look forward to! I only have 5 blades left on the den. After 2+ years, that hundred pack of Lab Blue Personnas is just about done. So just when winter turns to spring, I’m going to need more blades. As it happens, I have been contemplating a full time conversion to an adjustable Schick Injector. It was the only razor I remember my Dad using (he passed way to young just about 30 years ago). He had a Schick push button hot lather machine (you stuck a can of shave cream in this contraption that dispensed warm lather), and routinely came downstairs with a roll of TP plastered to all of the nicks and weepers.

He never did the brush thing, so I think it’s kind of ironic that I’m more old school than he was. In any case, I am looking forward to following in his footsteps.

Hard to go wrong with the right injector. Have you tried ACs?

I love the G5 Schick injector I got about a year ago. Until then I was a SE virgin. I think you'll be pleased with the results.

I've been playing around with brush loading this week. As everyone knows, the PdP is a really hard puck. I'm almost 2 months in with this soap, heavily loading with synthetic brushes, and I've barely used up 2 millimeters from the top. This is going to be a long run. Still, loading for 40 seconds is overkill and there is plenty of lather left in the brush after my 2 passes. I won't say I feel guilty, exactly, but PdP is very good and I thoroughly enjoy the scent (especially the linger postshave), so I don't feel good about loading it like I hate it.

For the last few days, I've cut my loading time in half, taking it down to 20 seconds, and then face lathering. I am going back to the sink for water a couple of times as I build the lather, and am getting enough good lather to give me my standard 2 pass shave. There is still a little left in the brush, but a third pass would be positively Scroogeian from a lather standpoint. No wonder he rocked the muttonchops. So 20 seconds works. 30 would be better, but let's see how this goes. At some point the redeeming value of the scent will be passed by my desire to MAKE. IT. GO. AWAY. That's not today, though.

Bob, that is amazing commitment. I LOVE PdP 63 but no way would I last that ling and 2 mm...........WOW, this soap is a bargain for the price on a per shave cost scale. More power to you and hope the enjoyment factor remains as long as it can for you (y)

I think I paid $15 for it, so the per shave cost will be pennies by the time I'm done with it. I am really enjoying it, though it's not a top tier soap for performance, but that scent......

Bob’s settled in for the long haul!

Go get em Bob!

Giddy up!

Lather from 20 seconds loading was too spartan, so I have settled on 30 seconds. Moving on to the L’Occitane Synthetic by Plisson for March.

Last week, I took a break from PdP and just used my (excellent) Lea stick. As Doug has experienced with the puck, this tallow + lanolin soap is very, very good. It lathers quickly and stably, with a clean soapy scent. My shaves were very good indeed. I went back to PdP this morning, and was rewarded with its own version of a very good shave, though the postshave feel was not as good as Lea. When I loaded up a fresh blade in the Mergress this morning, I noted that my 100 pack box of med prep Personnas has just a single blade left, meaning that after that blade, there will be none of my razor blades in my house for the first time in almost 30 years. I will be placing an order for a pack of Schick injector blades to start using in about 2 weeks.

I will be going injector only for the foreseeable future in honor of my Dad who used one for decades.
My father used one as well, though he had a Slim handy. Honestly, I paid no attention to what he used, but he accumulated a variety of items. Towards the end of his life he favored electrics.

I vividly remember his setup. My parents had a half bath with 1 sink, and my dad had a Schick hot lather machine (stick a can of cream in the contraption, turn It on and in a few mins press the button on top to deliver hot lather. It was fun to mess around with that. He had a Schick adjustable injector and replaced the blade maybe once a month. It’s funny how they had brand loyalty. He was a Schick guy through and through (Sheaffer FP guy too).

Right now, with this bat crap crazy situation we have, I find our little hobby very comforting. It’s allowing me to get a little comfort from the past (which wasn’t exactly great!). Just this stupid process we do every. Single. Blessed. Morning is one thing I can control. Working from home now, I can take some time and relish it too. I can lose myself in a routine for 10 minutes. Just me. No interruptions. No worries. It’s not much to ask for, is it? Don’t we all deserve it?

What? You get to relax in the morning when you WFH? I am now WFH as well and still have to get up at 5:30am so I can drop my wife off to her new temp workplace (as they shuttered some of the city offices) which is further away than her regular office.

Well I usually get up between 4-430 and right now, I have no lunches to make in the morning. And then I just walk downstairs to work. Of course I am now averaging 3000 steps per day, which I will have to do something about.

Now I feel lazy! 🤪 I wake up around 4:50 but can usually doze off for another 1/2-hour or so before waking again to watching the clock tick over to the alarm.
Is 3,000 steps a good or bad number for you?

I try for 10000, and when I go for a run usually hit more than 12000. On an average day with no running, I clock about 6000.
