Does Arizona law allow barbers to use traditional straight razors to shave, or does it require disposable blades?

Yes AZ does allow it, however as I have been finding most barbers are not very well trained on a regular straight, most have opted to the feather or shavette systems due to maintenance, honing, stropping and hygienic issues, we are using a multitude of the three dependent on the barber's skill level, however we are moving to be straight only. I have most of the barbers converted or converting to the Feather DX as a transition, as most dont want to go through all the hoops for honing and Stropping, of which I ma doing for most of the barbers now. I blame the schools as they are not training true straight shave and the use of good products. Only a lather machine and a shavette. Sad really, but this is my quest to change that, LOL Thanks Walt

Not much to say about that shave aside from the fact that it's one of my favorite set-ups of yours. Mk*32, Paladin, Fougere soap, AS, and EdT (THE fougere scent)...awesome.

You are giving me a hankering to dig out some of my other razor's Dave. If I do that, and get through them all, you will then be giving me a hankering to buy some other razors. "Must Not Give In."

Nice shave Dave. Everything in that setup looks awesome.

What about using a brush and real soap? What are the sanitation procedures between patrons? My daughter hired a stylist that was a transplant from a Chicago barber shop (not a licensed barber but cosmetologist), and she had a large horse hair brush for applying Clubman powder. My daughter had her quit using it for fear of sanitation issues. In PA, cosmetologists used to be able to use straight razors (shavette type typically) for the nape of the neck etc. No more, their razors must all be guarded now.

I see where using a traditional straight razor in a shop would require more time. Hence, it ought to cost more to the patron. If the barber earns more giving traditional straight shaves, then they might be motivated to learn it (finding the right compensation structure). I have given this some thought myself. Machine lather and shavette shaves for the patrons that just want a good quick shave or a haircut and a good quick shave. For those patrons that want the complete traditional experience, then they have to pay more as it takes more time (two beer experience). Not sure what the market will bear here or there with respect to this. I assume you are selling straight razors in your shop to patrons, or you have plans to do so. I was thinking that for each straight razor sold, I would offer to shave the customer with their purchased razor before they walk out the door with it. Again this full service would have a price associated with it.

Just catching up on your shaves and fantastic pictures. Wow, you have some gorgeous razors!

Great looking shave, Dave!

Your use of the FB to clean up after the Wagner's edge was found to be not up to snuff is enlightening for me. It's great that you are so in tune with the edge that you know when to change gears mid-shave. Thanks for sharing!

Great read, shave, and picture Dave!

It's always wise to stop with the straight and change to a DE or SE, when something isn't right with the shave.

Its not always easy to do for some reason, but it is smart!
