A view from the UK - ajc347’s Shaving Journal

Came in different forms. I have an earlier model I think mid 30's. It goes together uniquely. Not the typical threaded handle.

Not sure but may show how it works in this video

I decided to test the Fatip against another slant again tonight. This time I chose my Ikon B1 Slant and included a head shave into the mix.

Razors: Fatip Gentile Slant & Ikon B1 Slant
Brush: Wild West Brushworks
Soap: OSP
Pre-Shave & ASB: Bart’s Balms Peppermint
Blade: Feather

I also thought I’d try a cold water shave for the first time, having always shaved with hot water before.

The first thing I noticed was that, whilst the lather formed nicely in the bowl, the anticipated menthol scent was missing. The lather also felt a bit meh when I applied it to my face. On my head it felt awful. The best I can liken it to was like someone slapping me over the head with a wet fish!!!

Things looked up when I started to shave. The Ikon surprised me as I can’t remember it being as smooth as this before. I haven’t used it for a few months and a change in routine may well account for this.

In terms of the two, I could tell no difference between the Fatip and Ikon in terms of efficiency after two head passes, and the Ikon felt ever so slightly smoother.

Onto the face shave.

I re-lathered in my bowl with warm water this time and this improved things somewhat. I then used cold water to rinse the razors and the juxtaposition between hot and cold on my face felt great. I’ll certainly be repeating this combination again.

In terms of the razors, the efficiency of the Fatip and Ikon was the same as on the head shave and the Ikon felt slightly smoother.

I changed things up for the second and third passes adding a Blackbird and Timeless 0.95 SB into the mix. These are two razors I know well and I found the Fatip to be smoother than the Blackbird and slightly less smooth than the Timeless (which didn’t surprise me as it’s one of the smoothest razors out there).

So far, my preliminary thoughts on the Fatip are:

1) Cheap, good tolerances but a bit rough around the edges.
2) As efficient as an Ikon B1 Slant, Blackbird and Timeless 0.95 SB.
3) More efficient than a Razorock Wunderbar.
4) Smoother than a Blackbird.
5) Less smooth than Wunderbar, Timeless 0.95SB and an Ikon B1 Slant.

I can definitely see these razors becoming popular over time. [emoji846]

Thanks Dave

A lot of people are raving about them on a UK-based Facebook forum and everyone and his dog are trying them at the moment.

Cold lather definitely is a no-no for me. [emoji846]

Used to be a hot/warm water only shaver. Since getting my Paladin and using badgers for the last month, I’ve switched to cool/cold to reduce chances of knot damage/shedding. It’s been quite nice!

I switched to cold* water shaving pretty early on and have had great results. Recently i started rinsing my razor in hot water with cold for everything else. Been getting even smoother shaves ever since.

*as cold as it gets in AZ at least lol.

When I started out wet shaving, I would actually use an immersion heater to make sure I had super hot water. Now I only use cold tap water, each and ever day. Florida will do that to you.

My beard has become progressively greyer over the last few years to the point where there are hardly any darker hairs left.

My razor choice has changed somewhat as well.

I built up a big collection of vintage British Techs, NEW’s and Rockets over the years along with with a Feather AS-D1, an Ikon OSS and B1 Slant, an ATT S1 and a 37c, as well as a few SE’s.

My preference was for milder razors. Over time, though, they ended up working less efficiently and I stared to explore other options.

I found, after a change in pre-shave routine and the use of an uber lather, that I could use razors that were more aggressive than I could previously. I used to struggle with an ATT M1, for example, put now find this a bit mild compared to an R1.

Up until today, I put this down to better preparation and good choices of blades coupled with more modern designs of razors.

The article I read today confirmed that that grey hair does actually get thicker and more difficult to cut as we age. This was revelatory. I had heard this before but always assumed it was a myth. It turns out that it is borne out by science.

I now understand, for example, why I can go ATG on my next whereas I would never have dreamt of doing this before.

The simple fact of the matter is that my body has changed and my shaving kit preference has changed with it.

I’ve been right to sell off my vintage Gillette collection and, now that I’m down to the last 20 or so, I’m planning (as mentioned in my posts above) on having some farewell shaves with them before I move them on. This will also serve as a reminder as to how much things have changed..

I’ve also ordered a DE-89 head. I never really got on with this razor when I first owned it all those years ago. I’m looking forward to revisiting it in order to see whether my experience with it will be different.

Hmmm - first shave with a Parker Semi Slant tonight.

I had read that this was supposed to be a smooth and engaging razor.

I don’t get it.

It’s efficient, I’ll give it that.

It also has a bit of drag which I actually quite like in a razor.

But smooth. Nope. My 37c is smoother.

I did not like this razor. Not one little bit.

It strikes me as being over-hyped and I’ve just had one of the worst shaves I’ve had in years.

On a positive note the Denali, Proraso Green, Ross Giles Ceramic Tuxedo and Bart’s Balms performed excellently, but then they always do. [emoji846]

I used the Parker Semi Slant for a head shave today and, again, whilst being pretty efficient, did feel pretty rough. I’m struggling to understand why this is marketed as being a mild and smooth slant as, for me, it clearly isn’t. It’s off to a UK based BST so I can at least recoup some of my outlay.

For my face shave I used a DE89 head I forgot I had. I think I last used it about 8 years ago when I first started using a DE. I must admit to being pleasantly surprised by it and I think it deserves a place back in my rotation. [emoji846]
