A Place for Deep Thought

More time with the CBL Granite and I am just loving it! Wonderful soap providing a great shave. And I bumped the Slim down to 5, and I have been getting some really nice shaves. I do think that the gunkote makes it drag compared to the brass Karve. I plan to use the pre-War Tech for the next two shaves to compare.

I think between 4 and 6 inches. I am in central Maine, about 20 miles north of Augusta. Lots of blowing, and that makes some areas bare and others buried!

Not too bad. I'm about 50 mines NE of Agusta sand we got 2 1/2 inches and the wind was wicked off the ocean.

Hey, I didn't realize you were in Maine! (or I forgot!) when I moved here, I lived in the Kennebunk area, teaching high school chemistry while switching careers to pharmacy.

So, howdy neighbor!

For the past 2 shaves I used the pre-War Tech. Great shaves both times. I didn't notice the drag I did with the Gun Koted Slim. I really enjoyed shaving with history, but I am looking forward to using my Karve again!

Pre-war Techs are great. I’ve put one in both of the new shaver kits I’ve made.

Glad you didn't get clobbered by the nor'easter. I've lived in CT, MA, & RI, and those storms can dump loads of snow in a hurry. As a kid they were great for school cancellations!

I made a bit of minor mess with my PIF, trying to write it from my phone with Tapatalk, and gumming things up with copy and paste and fat fingers! But eventually I got it corrected, and the Cadre came through with a gent in need of a razor and meeting my idea of a Christmas PIF to someone deserving and in need. I do feel bad about leading folks astray for an hour or so, but it all worked out and folks seem okay with what I was afraid would be viewed as a renege on my initial PIF post.

I have been reading some interesting posts in what I believe is the Evil Empire (but @Dave in KY would have to verify that, and I probably don't really need to know). The threads have to do with blade life and with multi-year sabbaticals. I tried sabbaticals and decided I am minimalist enough to not need that anymore. I had felt "weighed down" with shave gear, worrying about rotations and usage while storage had to move from below the sink (my shave drawer is two wire baskets in a stack, neatly gliding on a track like a drawer would) to a box in the laundry room. Now all my stuff except bulk blade packs are in the bathroom. I feel lighter. And I like the feeling that if I want to get something I can, but I really don't need/want any more stuff. The Karve in brass has been fantastic, and I love the brushes and soaps I currently have. BUT, I still ordered a Black Friday stainless steel Karve. My expectations for the razor are high, while my expectations of receiving the razor anytime soon are low! While I love the razor, the manner in which Kirchen runs his business leaves alot to be desired. Just look at thread in other forums. I went into the purchase knowing full well that this would most likely be a long wait, so I can't complain.

As to blade life, I am all over the place. I know I can go a ways on one blade, but here I like to rotate just because I have so many blades I like. In the new year, who knows? I am planning to stop logging the daily shave, and just make notes weekly. I enjoy shaving and am no longer feeling the need to track each day. Part of why I started this Journal was as a place to make those notes.

In the home front, life is challenging us. My wife has severe health issues which are worsening and the insurance company won't cover the recommended treatment as it is not currently (their wording) approved for her indication. Even though the specialist she sees is part of the clinical trial taking place in Boston at this time! So we are appealing and filling out forms, running to appointments, and trying to schedule in home help for the days I work (12 hour shifts, but 36 hrs/wk). Work also has its own set of challenges, as anyone working for someone else can tell you! The higher up you go, the more out of tune the suggestions/directives seem to be. Still, I think I work for one of the better outfits, and I am blessed with great coworkers!

Enough of that. The main point was to more fully document why daily logging of a shave seems less important to me at this time, but I still love my daily shaves and have some awesome gear to use!

Don’t sweat the PIF. You got it done and it’ll be off to a happy home!

Sorry to hear about the insurance troubles. The system sure is messed up. I hope things get sorted for your wife.

Thanks! We have high hopes, it just takes so long to dot all the i's and cross the t's on the forms and documentation requested.

That sucks about the health issues. People have enough to deal with when health issues arise without insurance gumming up the works.
