4th Annual February "One Blade" Challenge!

Many of these vintage honing/stropping devices were made either during wars or during the Great Depression so that people could save money and/or metal by getting more life out of a blade. The cool thing is that they actually work to prolong the life of a blade. The downside is that they do not work with modern stainless blades. They only work with carbon steel blades.
Very cool. I’ve certainly seen posts calling these things bunkum and I wonder if it is because the poster was trying to sharpen a modern blade

That is most likely the case.

The main issue is the coatings that are used on the edges of modern (i.e. stainless steel) DE blades. Honing a modern blade can degrade or flat-out remove those coatings harming blade performance. Besides, the combination of stainless steel and modern edge coatings make for blades that last longer and keep their edge better than carbon steel.

Nacet is going strong. 14 shaves down and still feeling good. Didn’t think about it when the month started but I’m using a razor that has two different blade gaps… and shaving about 90% on one side/10% on the other. Might flip the blade to try and even out the wear a bit.

The Treet Black Carbon is still going strong at shave #18.

I am still using a combination of towel stropping to remove leftover residue and some of the water, palm stropping to help prevent micro folds in the edge, and occasional honing on my vintage hones to bring more life to the blade. Oh, and there is the dip in isopropyl alcohol as a final step after each shave. The blade continues to give me consistently good results with no rust.

It could just be a perception thing, but it really does feel like carbon steel blades are more gentle on my face than stainless blades.

I am sure that one of the things helping me is that I am keeping the Mergress on 1, just like @Spider is doing with his.

This has been a really good month of shaves so far.

Eight shaves in, paying more attention to my foam performance, this I think is helping a lot with the shave, much smoother and cleaner cut.

This combo of Personna blade and Mergress razor is so nice and smooth shaving that I've actually altered my routine. Instead of my normal 3 or 4 pass + touchup shave. I've been doing a 2 pass + touchup. I've been doing my normal WTG then I skip both XTG passes and go straight to ATG. I pick up any needed XTG on the touchup pass. Still getting BBS with fewer passes.... this means my blade will last about twice as long as normal. Going to be using this for a while!

Foam? No one likes shaving with foam. Are you meaning your lather?
Yes lather, we just call it foam, most people that do not shave properly just call it foam, makes life easier, untill they ask what real shaving is about, then I can explain how good it is for the face and the planet with no plastic rubbish being used and discarded after five shaves

They call it foam because that’s what it is. Foam comes from a can and that’s what most people use. When you build it yourself by adding water to a cream or soap, it’s lather.
