Hot Buttered Rum
(Homemade brown butter fat wash rum, sugar, hot water)

A campfire themed rum drink. Made with a spoof kalua, a few dashes of Aztec chocolate bitters, a brûlée’s sugar cube and a couple ounces of Don Q 151 rum. Smoked with mesquite. It was so tasty I made another, this time I smoked it with pipe tobacco and mesquite…loving it.

PSA… using 151 rum adds an extra layer of excitement when smoking the drink. The first drink was made in a chilled glass with chilled ingredients, the second glass was made with and ice cube and refrigerated ingredients. The vapors of the 151 ignited in the smoking top, nothing dramatic but worth being aware of.

Finally opened my small bottle of Blair Athol 12, brought back with me from our trip to Scotland over a year ago. I do love a whisky that has a taste of sherry…this was a treat! It won’t last long unfortunately but I’ll savor every sip!
