What’s new to you?

I seen a post on here about Gold Dollar straight razors. If I remember right is was about modifying them. So I did some research about them. Heard alot about their low quality. Discovered that most complaints was steel quality. But also that 1 of the other reasons for not being able to rehone them was because of them being warped, especially at the spine. If not caught mskes them not able to be properly honed. Because of curiosity, I decided to try 1, but didn't get yhe cheapest 1. Got 1 without stabilizer because that was also a complaint that made them harder to hone. Once I hot this 1 I checked it gor a warped spine or blade. Found it to be straight. Passes hanging hair test. Passes packing peanut test. Passes shaving my arm test, straight out of box. Not going to bother ever using travel strop they sent in kit. That is junk compared to what I already have. Brush is just OK handle wise, but synthetic knot is pretty good but small probably 18 mm. Soap was a very pleasant surprise. Weak citrus scented triple milled soap I'm guessing. Lathers very quick with very little water, but decently slick. Residual slickness is there but barely. Tested soap with my Supply Single Edge Max Razor with a Schick Injector razor blade. Yes, can make them work. But maybe slight increase in blade gap since it sets up slightly higher because it doesn't have 3rd hole Supply blades have. Make sure blade alignment is correct it can shift if not careful closing hop. Will try straight razor during weekend when I get back home. On the road until Saturday. If straight razor quality is too low for my liking, I'm gonna remove scales to put on different razor because the scales are excellent quality and pretty 😍

Very nice! I'm looking forward to your full report on the Gold Dollar straight razor. In my experience, Gold Dollars can be honed effectively despite their reputation. The saying "you get what you pay for" applies, but I've modified several with good results, they hold an edge well enough for the price. The older Model 66 razors were less consistent than newer ones, but both make solid starter razors for beginners or great practice razors for honing. Some love them and even build seven-day sets with them. Enjoy and let us know how it goes!

Most of the research on Gold Dollars are based on the Gold Dollar 66, mentioning the inconsistencies in that particular model, that's why I chose this model in this kit(also because scales are beautiful) little more high end for a Gold Dollar. I accidentally bought a Gold Monkey once from Alex press when trying to get the Gpld Dollar 66 model. Don't get that. Mat be mild steel. You can get it sharp, but it will go dull during shave about halfway through second pass, can't hold an edge. But I degrees. See next post for Gold Dollar razor shave.

Finally tried new Gold Dollar straight razor I got. Straight from box, definitely almost shave ready, tiny bit tuggy, but kinda expected. Stropping would definitely fix that. The balance is very good, scales are a little to tight, but will loosen over time. Very comfortable to hold. Yjis I thought was a full hollow or extra hollow not sure. But this razor sings very loudly, love that. 2 pass snd touch-up bbs. Now just wondering how long it will hold an edge. Glad I tried this!

Glad to hear the shave went well! It has some interesting pins, never seen any like that. I’m surprised to hear it was shave ready out of the box, what a nice surprise! Cheers!
