Declaration Grooming Santal Auster | C.V. Heljestrand No. 7
Currently on Shave #483 | Straight shave #290

This was one of the blades that was in need of a refresh after about 10 shaves on it or so. So, I found a little bit of time in the day to do the needed work on the blade. I decided against tape since I was only doing a refresh and would not be causing undo spine wear on the razor. I took it down to a Mejiro Nagura slurry first, doing 25 laps, medium-light to very light pressure, 20 very light laps with a diluted slurry. Cleaned off the stone, worked up a Tomo Nagura slurry and did 40 light-medium-light to very light pressure laps, diluted the slurry and did another light 30 laps. Finally I did 40 very light pressure laps on water only, followed by 15 laps on glycerine/water, and 10 spine leading laps. 50/125 on the firehose and leather and the blade was hitting a very comfortable HHT4/5 across the entirety of the blade. Not bad for 20 minutes of effort. Just based off of the HHT, this is one of the more successful honing sessions I’ve had…now let’s see how that translates to the true test, the shave.

The soap for the day was Declaration Grooming’s Santal Auster. This is their experimental soap base, named Project Icarus. I’ve done one test lather with this against one of their normal bison tallow bases and the result was pretty astonishing…to the point where I had to actually downgrade DG’s normal base scores for moisturizing. (it only lost ½ a point) One thing I will say about this soap base is that it is the thirstiest soap I’ve ever encountered, by a wide margin. The resulting lather, however, is the best soap base I’ve used to date. So, from a performance standpoint, it can’t be beat. However, and they warned about this, the addition of another type of tallow gives the soap a very pronounced anamalic smell, which cuts through the subtle sandalwood scent pretty dramatically. The resulting scent is not the most pleasing…which is a shame, because the scent off of the AS salve that matches it is simply SUBLIME. I did let the soap sit out for 2 days uncovered to try and diffuse the smell, but it didn’t work all that well. Lathered up, the anamalic smell dissipates a bit leaving the sandalwood to shine through more, so is not as pronounced, but it’s still there.

So, the shave…it was most excellent! Three passes with the No. 7, clean-up handled by the ‘Jectah, left me DSBBS(G). The alum barely registered anywhere, just letting me know that I did shave, but really no sting at all. The Fine aftershave, normally pretty biting, was absolutely silent. Topped off with the matching salve and some Creed Santal Original, it was a top 5 shave for sure.

A couple of final notes from the shave:

- I love the ergonomics of this brush, but the knot is definitely a lather flinger. I had suds everywhere. Slightly more scrub than the blackwolf, cashmere and Boss knots, but still nice and soft.

- In regards to the soap, I’m pretty conflicted. I really want to dislike this soap due to the anamalic scent and pricing. But on the flip side, it gave me one of the better shaves I’ve ever had, and I did pay a pretty penny for it. My spreadsheets are pretty telling on this soap. From a performance only standpoint, it’s top in the den, 55/55. Taking preference into account, and it falls to number 37 (65/75), on par with La Quatrieme Ville. Add the cost factor in, and it falls even further to number 62 (68/85). By that measure, it’s not worth the extra money spent. But, it is the best performing soap I’ve ever used. I just wish they had tried this soap base with a different scent profile, something not so subtle as sandalwood.

- The edge on this blade after its refresh is an B+/A-. I think I can get it even keener while maintaining the smoothness. But it was definitely in fine form, one of the better refreshes I’ve done in a while.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Good stuff Josh. The base of the soap seems nice but the scent doesn't sound appealing. I am already very picky about sandalwood scents.

Thanks Chad...

So, the soap base is, for lack of a better word, superior to anything else I've used. But the real gamey scent coming off of it is just very unappealing. The Sandalwood scent, however, if you smell the AS salve, is exquisite. A little similar to Santal Absolut from Fine, but with much more depth. I would almost say it's a closer match to Creed Santal Original than anything else that I've had the chance to smell.

I had one of those R400 brushes with 3 interchangeable knots bases. I ended up selling it off because i felt it was totally unnecessary considering i own a rubberset 400. I did keep an empty knot base so i can pick another knot someday without having to remove the TGN badger i currently have. I will say, if you want the Rubberset 400 style brush the Razorock r400 is an excellent choice. It is so close to the original rubberset design you wouldn't be giving anything up.

I think the L&L/Declaration Grooming soap is a pretty solid performer and don't regret having a few tubs in my den.

Nice shave Josh, and I love the pic! Too bad about the scent, but the performance makes it sound like a must-have.

Thanks Chris. I was looking at the switchbacks for a while, but they wanted 3x what they were charging for this brush, without the knot. The interchangability is nice, but not something I would use often enough to justify that purchase. I'm very happy with this purchase, and considering it was only around $20, it's quality far outpaces the price point, for sure. I've gone a little overboard (is that even a thing?) with the Declaration Grooming soaps...pretty soon I'll have 10 of them in the den. But they're such good performers that it's hard not to load up on them.

I love your detailed soap reviews and rating system

Thanks Dave...I guess that's the analyst in me. I tend to come up with a metric chart for a lot of things, so it just seemed intuitive to do so with my soaps. I'll probably do the same with my brushes eventually. LOL.

Great shave and read. Too bad it had the animal smell.

Thanks Don. I didn't catch it at first, but once I took more time to really try and get the nuances of the scent down, I realized the animal fat was what I was mostly smelling out of the tub.

Thanks Eric...I'll say that for those people who don't really have a strong inclination to scent, or scent isn't a large factor in their enjoyment of a soap, this is the perfect product. For me, in my charts, scent is worth almost 25% of the total score, and is over 25% of the total score when the cost element is removed. Love the performance of the soap, but might have to pass it on.

Who could those folk possibly be? LOL

For me, scent is at least 50% in terms of importance for a soap.

Well...today is one of those days that's extremely conflicting for me. This is the 5 year anniversary for me and SWMBO and it's the 5th time I've been away for one reason or another. That's a pretty hard pill to swallow for me. Without getting into too much detail, there really isn't a way home for me at the moment, but we're working towards it; slowly but surely. I will say that the camaraderie that exists here is one of the things that makes being away during anniversaries, birthdays and holidays bearable. Thank you everyone!

I know I was saying before how we were looking at a pretty hefty bill from the gov't due to my injury last year. We went with an accountant this year to handle taxes and yesterday was when the black bell tolled. SWMBO dropped the forms off on Monday, and the initial assessment was around 10k owed. He wanted to do a bit more research, and yesterday he had a finalized answer for us. Amazingly, he was able to find a loop-hole in the tax code and we are actually going to get a refund of around $1200. Amazing, and quite a load off of both of our shoulders.

No shave today as the amount of stubble I had this morning could be classified as an SAS still, 24 hours after yesterdays DSBBSG. As of right now, I have on hand 3 more soaps that I need to go through. Tomorrow is going to be another Declaration soap, Bon Vivant. I love the scent on this, but honestly don't have anything that remotely pairs with it from a fragrance standpoint...lol. I guess I'll figure it out tomorrow morning when I get there...or tonight when I take the SOTD photo.

Have a great day everyone!

Great news on the tax man front. And happy anniversary. I can only imagine how hard it is to be away for that long from family. The random business trips for me are hard enough, But they are never longer than 10 days per company policy. I am sure when stateside you make it up to her. Spend an extra 10 minutes on the phone today with her.

Thanks Chad. I spoke with her a little already today, but will be doing so more later on.

That sucks about being away. Time to start planning something big for #10!

Awesome about the tax. What a relief and can you imagine how many pucks of Col Conk you can buy with that refund?!?

Great news about the taxes. And since you don't have a match for the soap, you could use it to buy the EdT.

Josh, awesome shave yesterday.

I actually came across a nice Rubberset 400 at an antique store and purchased it, but I haven't yet worked on fixing it up. The knot that was in it was worthless.

Maybe I'll tell SWMBO to send it to Rudy and get it back in time for Father's Day.

Thanks Don!! (Un)fortunately, that money has already been earmarked for no-touch savings. That doesn't mean I won't celebrate with a purchase, or four!

Thanks Randall! Great score on the Rubberset in the wild...they aren't easy to find. Sending it off to Rudy would be a great idea...he does phenomenal work!

Declaration Grooming Bon Vivant | Hartford Cutlery 5/8” Extra Hollow Ground
Currently on Shave #484 | Straight shave #291

As mentioned yesterday, Declaration Grooming’s Bon Vivant was up to bat today, and once again, DG performed amazingly. I’ll speak on the scent later. The Hartford Cutlery is a sentimental favorite since it was made in my home state’s capital, and I’ve generally gotten good shaves off of it. This morning was an ok shave, result wise, as the edge, while smooth, just didn’t have the level of keenness to get me to a good BBS level. Back to the stones!

The shave itself went pretty well, 3 passes and a fairly substantial clean-up with the Injector and I’m sitting BBS- with a little bit of sting from the alum since I had to go over places a few more times than normal. The salve calmed all of that down, followed up with the only thing in my den that was even close to the scent, Davidoff’s Hot Water.

Now, I love the top notes on this scent. It has some notes of orange bitters that come through, and immediately followed by some spice and, maybe a type of bourbon smell, without the alcohol. The next phase, which really came through in the salve, is very leathery, which is not a favorite scent note of mine. All in all, it’s a very well done scent that opens wonderfully for me, but ends up on a rather ho-hum note. I can see this being a favorite for a lot of people out there. Don’t get me wrong, I do like the scent profile, and out of all the buffalo head scents by DG, this is my second favorite behind Champs de Lavande…but by a fairly wide margin.

ETA: Mail Call!

Newly arrived fragrance, Clinique Happy for Men. This is a frag that I wore for years, layering it with Acqua di Gio. This is very mandarin orange heavy. Truth be told, it's not a great performer, and the projection is minimal. But I LOVE the scent...a great match to any bright citrus/orange scents. (I'm looking at you CFG Santa Paula and Stirling Satsuma!) Not pictured are some re-fillable atomizers (5ml)...nothing exciting there.

Have a great weekend everyone!
