The wonderful excesses of acquisition disorders...and wet shaving

Bummer about the dig and soap issues! That’s what you get for ditching the rotation!

Just kidding!

Josh. You have me curious. What changed? You had rated this soap higher before, so the slickness must have been there before right?

it just seems odd that you would change your rating.

is This a new tub to you, maybe a difference in batch?

I had put WSP-T in my want list based on your, and others, reviews.... but if you’re saying it lacks in slickness, that’s a no-go for me.

I honestly couldn't say KJ, it was puzzling me as well but I think a couple of factors went into the change.

1. Experience with more soaps. Just being exposed to some of the more recent excellent additions to the artisan soap community has opened my eyes to what actual elite slickness is, enough so that it really highlights it for me when I use a soap that is not nearly as slick.

2. Lathering experience. This kind of goes hand in hand with the above, but from a different angle. I brought the WSP to a point where it really couldn't take any more water without breaking down. So the slickness should have been at its peak. How do I know this? From just an accumulation of experience over the past 2+ years and over 200 soaps. It's less than many others here on the forum, but still quite a bit in the same time period. Being able to adjust a lather to ones specific needs and desires within the water band without breaking the lather is definitely an acquired skill and something that might have been lacking the first time around.

So...in short, I think the difference isn't in the soap, but the user. And that is in the form of experience and perspective. It's the best I can come up with for now.

let me add...if there is a scent from WSP that you think you'd like, the scent strength on them is generally very strong, so if you like strongly scented soaps, they're one of the best on the market for that.

Thanks, and in that regard, I think I might just try an aftershave instead.

This gets to the heart of why I was asking. You judge a soap to be a 10 on slickness. Then another soap comes along that’s even slicker. This isn’t Spinal Tap, we don’t go to 11, so you call it a 10. Well what happens to your scale now? Can you trust everything you called a 10 I’m the past, or do you have to re-evaluate everything?

just curious.

The bar is indeed raised and as I go through my soaps, I'll be constantly re-evaluating them. Just blame the artisans coming out with better product for ruining a perfectly good rating system!

Great read and picture Josh!

Interesting that the soap now has a lower rating. I still put it in my top performing soaps, maybe I just haven't had one that blows all the others out of the water yet.

Josh, glad that your dad is doing better.

Interesting about the WSP. I wonder how it would be if you used a synthetic brush or a boar brush. I find that sometimes certain brushes work better with certain soaps.

I am so glad all went well with your dad's procedure Josh. I know ir must be hard being so far away, but now with Skype and all of the other tools available to us, being far away is not nearly as hard as it used to be, not that long ago.

Couple of great shaves. I think I recall looking up weights of the Asylum RX, ATT SE2 and comparing them with your brass General a while back. If memory serves, I posted this on TSC.

Fine Santal Absolut | Gillette Super Speed Flare Tip (Z-3, 1954) | Perma-Sharp (2)
Currently on Shave #595 | Straight shave still at #366

This morning's shave left me pretty darned confused...albeit with a nice shave. So, yesterday's experience with WSP really had me curious about my ratings for other soaps that were in my den. I hadn't used a Fine Accoutrements soap in a while, so grabbed the Santal Absolut and a synthetic brush and got to work. The lather was phenomenal...everything I remember Fine soap to be. The sheen was great, the slickness was great, the cushion was great, residual was great. Post shave moisturizing was never a strong suit of this soap, so I wasn't really worried about that. Now, based off of Chris's comment that it might have been the brush type, I'm debating going back to WSP sooner than later with a synthetic and seeing what happens. I dunno...

So, the shave itself was awesome. As stated, the lather was exactly what I expect out of fine soaps...actually a little better, if I were being honest. I think I really hit the sweet spot. The super speed, never really the most aggressive of razors, was even more forgiving this morning with the Perma-Sharp blade and just gave a great shave with almost zero blade feel. I walked away with a nice DFS and absolutely zero feedback from either the alum or the aftershave. Followed up with some infused Paladin balm. Infused with what, you ask? Only some Creed Santal Original that I had in a small sample decant. All in all, a great shave today.

Another frustrating day at work. Normally I have this posted well before most people start their workday, or at least in the morning. But, as luck would have it the computer that I use at work kicked the bucket, with no DNR on record. So...have to wait for a replacement. No idea when that's going to happen. Oh well...

Hopefully everyone else's Monday's went well...since I'm having to use my computer in my room to post, and I have limited time there, my presence will be somewhat limited, but I'll keep posting video's and the occasional journal entry when I have the opportunity!

Have a great night everyone!

Sorry for the inconvenience of the loss of the work computer. I am on a computer all day every day at work, unless I am in meetings. If this happened to me, I think I would be better off working from home until the replacement came. But then again, I don't have to work in a scif.

No worries man! Great shave, be safe!

Thanks Chris!

Nice read Josh. Hope Tuesday's workday is better for ya.

Thank you Chad!

Yeah...all of my recent updates to my spreadsheet are going to be lost. I did have a copy in my email somewhere that I mailed to myself a few weeks ago, so I should be able to recreate it. That's about the biggest thing that was lost outside of some pictures and a few documents that should be recoverable through email...oh yeah, and all my passwords to various sites that I'll have issue remembering. LOL

Wholly Kaw Chypre Rose Concerto | C.V. Heljestrand No. 7
Currently on Shave #596 | Straight shave #367

Remembrance Day...quick post before hitting the sack. (it's 2am here)

I wasn't really thinking about the set-up for the shave in conjunction with the day it was. But, it was a very nice shave all the same. The WK soap is not the donkey milk base, but it's still a great base, about in between Stirling and Fine. The scent is what is standout for this soap, however. The balance of the citrus, rose, and darker notes is just sublime. The No.7 did well this morning cutting down the growth, and as I sit here over 15 hours later, I'm still not very stubbly. (there will be enough for the shave tomorrow) Finished off with the matching aftershave, some Paladin Balm infused with some BB and the BB top off. Yep...good start to the day.

I hope everyone's day was quiet and uneventful. Respect and gratitude to those that lost their lives 17 years ago.

Great couple of shaves, reads, and pictures Josh!

Bummer about the work computer crashing. We are going through the pains of changing out old computers for new ones. Just towers mind you, no new monitors, keyboards, etc. It took me an hour and a half to find the correct combination of cables and adapters to hook up my monitors last week.
