Talbot Shaving Governor's Island | C.V. Heljestrand No. 7 5/8"

Shave #564 | Straight Shave #352

A late entry today, as I just didn't have either a connection or the time while at work today. So, after work it is!

Talbot shaving is one of those soap makers that I've been really wanting to get my hands on. They're consistently getting great reviews online from their fanboys and others, but they are notoriously difficult to get a hold of. They're made in small batches and sell out fairly quick. (not quite Tangerine Creeper fast, but pretty quick nonetheless) When I saw the timing that I would be in NYC just days after the release of a Pasteur's Pharmacy exclusive scent, I knew I was in with a chance, and was elated when I found out they had some still in stock. (they pulled it from the shelves and kept it behind the counter to prevent people from purchasing more than one)

The scent I was on the fence about at first, but it's since grown on me, and I now really enjoy it. Later wise, I loaded with a dry brush this morning just out of absent mindedness, but since i bloomed the soap it wasn't too big of an issue. I actually probably loaded more because of this. This soap is THIRSTY!!!!! Holy lord...I thought the DG Project Icarus soaps were thirsty. Not compared to this. The consistency of the lather reminded me of DG or WK donkey milk, and almost was a slick, cushioned, moisturizing and held excellent residual slickness. And I don't think I'm close to getting it dialed in. I'm seeing a final score of around 53-54/55 when all is said and done...I just don't see it being quite as moisturizing as the Project Icarus soap base.

The shave went nice and smooth with three passes (WTG, XTG, GTG) completed with zero irritation or blood shed, and I was left with a nice, comfortable DFS. Since I'm getting on schedule, I should be able to shave tomorrow, and I'm debating using the same soap to see if I can dial it in further. We'll see...I still have 10 soaps that I need to go through and will probably go with one of those. (the T+S West Coast IPA has been calling to me)

Hope everyone is going well. Vacation was a very much needed thing. Some family issues were talked about that had been brewing for quite a bit, and while not solved, lot's of progress has been made. I did surprise both my kids and parents, though surprising the latter will NOT happen again, as I'm pretty sure I about gave my dad another heart attack. We also were able to get pictures done...here's the first photo that we were sent from the photographer:

Thanks for the well wishes everyone, glad to be back, in many senses! Have a great week!

Great read Don. That is pretty high praise for the soap!

Great family pic beautiful family.

You have a beautiful family there Josh and am glad the much needed R&R was enjoyable and productive.

Great review as always. Since Talbot's soap is uber exclusive...I probably won't be looking for any...but I will definitely keep my eye out.

Sorry you are back in the 'Ghan...but happy to have back here in your shaving home!

Thanks Don...Talbot's is a hard one to get a hold of, but if you see one show up on the BST, I would jump on it.

Beautiful family and pic

Thanks Dave!

Glad you had some family time and R&R. Great photo!

Wickham Soap Co 1912 Union Sq. | Klas Tornblum “Bamboo Ferrari”
Currently on Shave #565 | Straight shave #347

Today was a somewhat rushed shave, but I was still able to get a full straight shave in. I grabbed another Pasteur’s exclusive soap in Wickham Soap Co 1912’s Union Sq. This is a vegan, leather-based scented soap, but instead of going in the bitter, dry, old leather-bound book direction, it took it in a more sweet direction, almost honey’ish in how it smells. There aren’t any scent notes listed anywhere online, but I thought I could get notes of tonka bean, sandalwood and maybe a little citrus that I’m guessing is neroli on top of the leather. (it wasn’t a sharp citrus like lemon, lime or bergamot) It’s quite pleasant for someone who doesn’t ordinarily enjoy leather based scents, as they tend to be smokey, dusty, and just not pleasant to me. Thusly, it is a nice addition to the den. Of course, pairing anything with it is challenging for me, but the scent strength is on the weaker side, at about a 2/5, both out of the tub and lathered.

The KT is still a fun little razor to shave with now that I have the edge where I like it. Many thanks to majorrich, Rich, for the PIF! The soap provided a great base for the razor to skate around on, and was whipped up by the fantastic brush made by our very own smattayu, Eric Sorrentino. The knot on this, from AP Shave Co., feels just like a tuxedo bulb, and performed just as well. The handle is quite pleasing to hold, with numerous ergonomic grips possible with the chubby-style handle.

I followed up the shave with the matching balm, which is quick becoming a favorite of mine. It soaks into the skin really well, and leaves absolutely no residue which might make your skin feel heavy or suffocated. With that being said, to get the full moisturizing effect, a little more product is needed than normal balms and serums. Topped off with the Davidoff Hot Water EdT, with its sweet orientals, and it was a good start to the day.

Happy ground-hog day everyone!

Tallow + Steel West Coast IPA | C.V. Heljestrand Mk*31
Currently on Shave #566 | Straight shave #348

Kind of a rough shave this morning, and completely not related to the soap. The razor was a little on the rough side, needing a touch-up. Because of that, a little more pressure was used, and the resulting irritation came in afterward. It wasn’t anything bad, I’ve certainly had more in the recent past, but more than I usually see with this razor.

The soap is the V2 version of T+S’s soap base, and it’s for all intents and purposes the same as their V3 base I’ve used in Kyoto and Sicily. I got a little aggressive with the water up front when building the lather, and in the end, left it a little dry for the first pass and was playing catch up the entire shave. I did end up with a decent DFS shave, however, and all the complaining is more to do with the fact that I couldn’t justify giving this soap a rating because of the other factors.

Scent wise, it’s nice. The hops definitely don’t take over the scent, but give the citrus components a nice grounding so they aren’t so bracingly bitter/sour. The aftershave not so much, it had a more “hoppy” scent to it that I wasn’t too keen on. I paired them with some Juniper Sling…just because. I figured if I’m going to smell like a beer, might as well go full monty and smell like a Gin tonic as well.

Happy ground-hog day everyone!

Okay...stop with the exclusive soaps...before you know it, I will to taking off on a whim to NYC and the wife won't know where I went! In all seriousness though...great read!

Nice shaves, pics and the video Josh

Thanks Dave!

Thanks Don...and I think you're safe for the time being...lol. Pasteur's did have another exclusive soap that I was eyeballing from Eufros...Park Avenue. But the scent wasn't really in my ballpark, and if I were to purchase another Eufros scent, it would be the Rosa Bourbon, of which they only had the balm in stock.

Well JOSH LOL

The scent on the IPA interesting. I enjoy a good IPA I might need to look into that one. But watching your video not sure the Aftershave would be for me.

Great update!

Kind of neat that there’s soaps out for beer lovers, even if that’s not my thing. It continues to amaze me, what scents can be cooked up and replicated with soaps.

Nice family photo, Josh.

And good reads on the soaps. Although, I don't think a beer scented soap sounds appealing.
