The Heysi Missive

The House That Ruth Built
In the early 1980s when Dave Winfield was playing my parents took me to a doubleheader at that era's version of the place (they lived on Staten Is.). I've been a Red Sox fan since 1967, so I felt totally out of place sitting behind home plate staring at that logo all afternoon. I just concentrated on not betraying my feelings of rooting for the evil Yankees (redundant, I know) to lose both. They didn't.

As a lifelong Dodger fan (and one that had to watch the Yankees beat us a few times in the 70's for the World Series title) I'm extremely reluctant to cheer for them, even on their home field....but I have a few years practice going to other stadiums and not cheering for anyone at all so I can say I experienced each ballpark. It's when I go to see the (hated) Giants that I'm going to have to restrain myself the whole game to not yell out GIANTS SUCK every few pitches.

Gonna switch to the As now? Represent the local team?

Switch? No.....but I will cheer for the home team (I'm part of a group of people that have plans to buy season tickets) But I will always be a Dodger fan. I will wear all of my Dodger gear when they come to Vegas to beat the snot outta the A's (or whatever they end up calling themselves).

Back in the day (2008-2014) I worked on a local race team here in Vegas. Short track racing in Legend cars and Super Late Model cars. The kid I was crewing for was really good....won a bunch of races and was doing really well, then work and family stuff caught up with me and I had to stop working on the car. This morning I learned that the kid I worked with was killed in an accident. I have no information on the nature of the accident (his family is being rather vague at the moment). He was a good kid and I spent many hours working on the car and doing repair work and such with him. Kind of devastating when someone in their late 20's losses their life to an accident.

Oh man, Steve, that's tragic. I'm sorry for your loss.

Quite a lot going on right now....

Heading to Memphis Tennessee tomorrow to see my daughter graduate from the University of Memphis (Whoo Hoo!!!)....but I didn't know that colleges graduate students in December....that's a new one to me.

We're going in a few days early so we can see our daughter and son in law for the first time since they announced they were pregnant. Plus we'll celebrate Christmas with them. So between going to a distillery or two...a few breweries and eating more BBQ than I'm sure would be recommended by law.....it will be a relaxing long weekend. Photos and trip report next week.

Just recently, my wife got back in touch with her friend from design school and it seems that my Kitchen and Bathroom remodel just became a much cheaper project. It will now take a bit longer but if the price comes down....I'm all for it.

Just put in my order for the CBL soap Drinks & Dave's...and while I was at it, I got a new tub of Dread Pirate Roberts......in my opinion....perhaps the best smelling shave soap I've personally ever smelled (this would be how I cover my slightly biased, very amateur opinion). And let me just say that @CBLindsay does a great job with his soaps. We're all lucky to be living in a golden age of shave software.

Just a bit of behind the scenes....this post was supposed to have a tale about the evening that @Spider and I would have had out on the town here in Vegas....but our friendly neighborhood Spiderman got beat up....by his fiancee....I think....I hope he's feeling better and that Amber will find a new way to show her love.....to her very soft man (I love ya brother!) See ya next time you come to town...first beer is on me (also....don't beat me up for the above comments).

See ya Later!!

Aside from Williams and MWF, I dare say this is your first (maybe 2nd) time buying soap???

I wish it was that exciting.

B4 I was wondering if you were going to buy our soaps, and now that you did I am happe

Me too. Or, I should say that I completed my classes in December, but the school put me on their official graduation list for the following May. Kind of weird.
Me three. Finished in Dec, but didn't walk until the next year.

Memphis....day 1

We are not in Memphis...
We're in Arkansas. West Memphis, Arkansas to be exact. It's a short 3 minute drive across the Mississippi River and we're in Tennessee. Saving money on vacation is a hobby.

First stop was the Peabody hotel in downtown Memphis. My wife was excited because they have ducks that live on the roof and are escorted downstairs each morning to frolic in the lobby fountain. They even have a Duck Master that takes care of them and teaches little kids about the ducks. I had a rum drink that had a rubber duck floating in it.

Next we headed down the alley across the street from the Peabody to a BBQ joint that has been smoking meat since 1948. Excellent brisket and BBQ beans. I had a Fireside Amber ale from a local brewery. Very tasty. The smoker is at the front of the restaurant and the smoke drifts down the alley....drawing hungry people to the restaurant.

For future visits....the Redbirds play baseball in downtown...I'll be back to see a game.

Finally, we stopped by the world's largest Bass Pro Shop. It's in a pyramid!! It has a restaurant and a hotel inside. I beat my son in law at the shooting arcade (he looked pissed...he owns several guns....I don't). Then we bought our future granddaughter a cute baby dress and blanket.

Right now I'm enjoying a local beer at our hotel. A good night's sleep will recharge the batteries for a full day tomorrow.

See ya Later!!

Memphis...day 2.

Spent the morning at the Civil Rights Museum. It's build into the Lorraine Motel. It's the motel where Dr. Martin Luther King jr. was assassinated. Very powerful message of struggle and what freedom really means. Worth a visit if you're ever in Memphis. I didn't take a picture.

Next we headed over to the Arcade restaurant. It's the oldest restaurant in Memphis. They have a special table that Elvis always sat at when ever he visited. It was occupied when we got there. I also didn't take a picture.

Then we headed over to Old Dominick distillery.

IMG_20231216_153533515.jpg

I've been to numerous brewery tours...this was my first distillery. Lots of great info on the distillery and the process for making spirits... And the we had some samples...

IMG_20231216_165334112.jpg

2 vodkas, 1 gin and a bourbon and 2 whiskeys. All very nice stuff (wasn't a fan of the gin). Might get a bottle of the bourbon and the Tennessee whiskey if they have it at the airport (cleared through TSA so I can take it on the plane!!). But for all of you brown liquor guys.....I drank some and I didn't die. So it's all good.

Finally we stopped at a very nice Italian restaurant for dinner to celebrate our daughter graduating. Fantastic pastas all around and of course the tiramisu was perfect.

Tomorrow... graduation!!! Then the plan is to see Beale street.

See ya Later!!

Memphis...day 3

Well...my daughter graduated from college!!

IMG_20231217_103953955_HDR.jpg

She has a bachelor's degree in history with a minor in political science. Next up... she'll be doing training to be a history teacher. But first up...my granddaughter should be born in early May.

So far it's been a really nice trip. Got to try a couple of really decent local beers. Had a local whiskey and a local bourbon. Ate too much. Slept too little. But my little girl finished her degree. So happy parents!!

See ya Later!
