The Heysi Missive

It's tough with animals.... I've hit my fair share of deer and other wild animals, but having a dog run across the road in front of me as his kids were waiting for the bus was the worst ever... I managed to slow to about 15mph but he still went flying and broke his leg. I helped the family with the vet bill, but still felt absolutely horrible, because the kids had to see it happen. Thank goodness it was only a broken leg...

Best wishes buddy.

So now that the cat is out of the bag....or rather; the TSC Con 2023 host city has been revealed.....I've been spending the past few days looking into the What, Where, How, and When of San Antonio (A city I've never visited but really want to see). It looks like a really fun city and it should be nearly as fun as Vegas for everyone in attendance (minus the gambling). I'm looking into food and beverage options at the moment. From German liters of bier to tiki mugs full of rum.....its going to be a blast.

For those that missed out on the last one....

...this is me playing the Bingo Scavenger Hunt and looking like a crazy man (I was a few weeks past a much needed haircut....and a few drinks in to the day).

For today's shave:

Decided to use the bakelite razor I found in 2020 at a much hidden antique shop in central Nevada. Its so light and not at all like anything I normally use. But with a Gillette Silver Blue it was surprisingly efficient.

Still enjoying the heavenly scent of the CBL Hombres soap I received during the lather contest. I whipped up a fine lather (even in 20% humidity) with the RazorRock Snowcap synth brush. Its amazing to me that a synthetic brush can be as good as a badger. There is much I still have to learn.

Was almost tempted to put on a splash of some Sterling aftershave but someone got a talking to by the scent police on monday so I'm still laying low.

See ya later!

Can't believe I've removed all the unwanted junk from my garage. Most of the junk was stuff we brought from the house in Santa Monica. A lot of it was stuff that belonged to my wife's grandparents (we inherited their house) and I hadn't had time to go though it when we lived there. So some of it was untouched for nearly 30 years. Now that 75% of it has been ejected from my life....its time to start arranging all the storage so we can get the house on the market. One step at a time.

Today's Shave.

Decided to go for an Ultra Vintage Shave this morning. Broke out the 1906 Single Ring. I'm really trying to love this razor....but its hard. Haven't used this razor in about 4 years. The open comb razors always feel really aggressive to me and I'm trying to accept that is what I signed up for with this razor. I'm slow to change but I'm getting there. That being said.....it wasn't as bad as I remember. Got a nice smooth shave with zero nicks and no weepers!!! So I'm feeling a bit more love for this 116 year old razor. Would still like to get it replated so I can use it a bit more often. I often feel if it was silver again (or even nickel) I would be willing to break it out more often. Getting a really great shave this morning has improved my appreciation.

Paired the razor with a Gillette Silver Blue. Again, I think a Gillette razor and a Gillette blade make a perfect combination that is unbeaten.

Used my EverReady badger. I'm not sure what year this was manufactured but these brushes were super popular in the 1950's so I assume that's roughly how old mine might be. Been watching videos on how to rehab these brushes so (someday) I can make this one look like its new out of the box again.

Still have a few more shaves left on my vintage Williams puck. And let me tell you.....after bowl lathering exclusively since learning that technique, I was uncertain if I could still get a good face lather going. Within moments of beginning my first face lather in over 5 years, I quickly learned that my bowl lather skills have improved my face lather skills. I had more lather than I knew what to do with. I had two hands full of extra lather after I had painted my entire face. Wish I could have produced that kind of lather during the lather contest. I could have shaved a whole bag of balloons. Really impressive.

Historical.....Enjoyable. Perfect

Looks like that might be one of the silver plated razors with just a bunch or tarnish on it. If you have some silver polish, try that. If not. there's a trick where you line a bowl with tin foil, put the silver item in, pour boiling water over it, then add baking soda to it. The reaction will eat the tarnish away, in just a fe wminutes. A buffing cloth will finish it up after that.

I've done the silver polish over the years. Only problem is....when I originally got the razor, someone had polished the snot out of the top of the head and its down to base metal...

...still...I can't be too upset. It only has one slightly bent tooth (bottom row, left) and there's no cracking on the handle. Just like RustBoy, I'd like to see this one brought back to near-new condition. And after the shave this morning....it's going into the regular random rotation.

There isn't a chance that the boiling water will crack the handle?
Don't think so. That's not the handle style that cracks. It's the later Old Types that were made thinner. I usually heat up water in the microwave, and pull it out at the first sign of a boiling bubble. Then it's kind of just below the boiling point, same as I do for my coffee.

So my holiday weekend was jam-packed.

We're still in the midst of the downsizing of the house. Finally got through the entire garage. Just have one small box for the wife to go through and then its 100% complete. Then spent a few hours clearing out the many nooks and crannies of the dining room. My wife was able to part with a lot of the stuff I figured she would never part with. I'm talking about silver trays she picked up at antique stores for the past 30+ years that she finally realized she hated polishing so she could use it once on New Years Eve dinner. Now just need to find some place that will give us a decent price for good quality silver.

I also took 3 huge boxes of books to the public library for donation. They love me at the library. That makes 7 boxes of books donated.

And then we headed to the local record store, Zia Records, to sell some of my old cassette tapes. They really love me there because they ended up buying nearly all of my old cassettes from the 1980's and 1990's for over $200 in store credit. The employees were telling me that I had some really incredible stuff and that they were all putting their names on the cassettes for their own collections. While we were waiting for them to go through the boxes, we dined at a pizza shop next door....my wife is not a big fan of pizza (who marries someone with that kind of strike against them?) but she was hungry and she didn't want to go very far. Well, it turns out the place is awesome. She had an antipasto salad and she declared that it was one of the best she's had. Then she signed up for their customer loyalty program so I now have a new pizza place to go to. Plus they had craft beer on tap...and the Dodger game on the tv.....so winner, winner, winner.

Today's shave:

Still getting great lather out of my Vintage Williams puck....only thing is I haven't had to load from the puck in over 4 days. Squeezing the excess off my brush back into the mug is saving me plenty of uses. I only wish I had discovered this sooner. I will have to keep track of how many shaves I can get out of my next new puck.

The EverReady Badger is coming along nicely....but I have a Semogue boar brush coming today (along with an Alum block!!) so that will be featured in future shaves.

Used my Pre-war tech with a Gillette Silver Blue blade. Supremely smooth and so easy. I'm not sure why the Gillette company got away from such a simple design to go with what they sell these days.

Decided to risk the wrath of the scent police and used the Booster aftershave. I'm not 100% sure who makes it. It says its from Canada. The website listed on the label doesn't go to an actual website so it may require some additional investigation. Maybe @Spider can help me with this one as he was the enabler that gave me the bottle (thanks, again). It smells like the barbershops I remember as a kid. The ones that my Grandfather used to go to.

Hey ummm, seems like we see a lot of "stuff" behind you on the Zoom calls. Maybe the next call you can start auctioning all that stuff off!

The bar is not filled with "stuff"....its a well curated collection of fine accoutrements.

It's made by the Canadian Booster Co. It's not available directly from them you have to buy it from a supplier. Italian Barber has a few of them. But it's available from a few others as well. They make several scents, but it seems to be getting harder to find. It's a great budget friendly AS though.

Not much going on in the Heysi world right now. Still packing up stuff around the house and staying busy at work. My boss is in India for the next month visiting his family and I have to hold down the engineering fort while he's gone. This is the 6th time in the 8 years I've worked here that I've had to do this temporary boss duty so its not a difficult task....just annoying to have to be the guy that people come to for the answers. I like that my office is like a ghost town 7 hours and 45 minutes of the day. On the upside...I have more time to comment on the TSC forums. That probably won't be the situation next month when my boss returns. Oh well.

Today's shave:

I felt I hadn't shown my Black Beauty any love recently so I broke that out this morning. It belonged to my wife's grandfather and I've been proudly using it for over 32 years. Still such a great razor. With a Gillette Silver Blue, it's near perfect.

Still getting fine lather out of what's left of my vintage Williams puck. Been reusing the extra lather that I squeeze back into the mug but today I loaded less on the brush and didn't need to reclaim very much extra lather at the end. I think I may have found a happy medium where I load just enough without any waste. It only took me 40 years to learn to be frugal with my Williams lather.

Not long ago I was the recipient of a generous gift from one of the fine gents around these forums, @Scuttlesoap , so I was able to get myself a brush from a brush maker I've heard people rave about....Semogue. I picked out a nice boar brush like the one below...

wp6ddf23ce_05_06.jpg

...and I really like the look and feel of the brush. It works up a nice lather. And you can't beat the look of the wood and silver accent.

I also picked up an Alum block after watching several other forum members using one during their shave videos (yes...I do watch other people shave on the internet). I've never used one before and I had to ask during the semi-weekly zoom meeting how to use one. This is the one I got...

...and I like it. Not sure what it's doing for my face but the slight tingle tells me its doing something.

For an aftershave, I've been using the Canadian Booster aftershave lotion Aquarius. It has a nice scent and it doesn't set off the alarms in the scent police office.

Basically, a nice fine shave with a bit of the old and a bit of the new.

See ya Later!
