The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man

Hey, y’all! Long time no see, in the journals.

So you all know I was going on a trip, and some of you remember me going on these trips in the past. So some of you may have guessed I was deploying again. The exact details of where were are going and especially when we are going are hush-hush, Until everyone arrives, and the Air Force makes all the details public.

So, I’m now on Diego Garcia. Anyone heard of it? It’s a tiny island in the middle of the Indian Ocean. We are over 1000 miles from the nearest land mass. It’s a British Owned territory, and the largest presence on the island is the US Navy (go figure).

Well, the Air Force is now a large presence on the island because we brought over 200 personnel and 3, B-2 Bombers.

Check out the press release here:

Well, it’s not all island parties right now. Because of COVID, we are on restricted movement. We can leave our rooms, except for the courtyard between the lodging buildings, we’re fenced in. And we get shuttled to meals and work. We’ve been here a week, and today is the first day they are going to give us a chance to go to the beach to swim. We’ve been able to go to one beach before, but because there are sharks in the water, we can only swim in designated areas, and were only allowed to go knee deep in the water in other areas.

My internet is extremely slow, Pretty much the equivalent of dial up. Yes pictures take forever to load. And it drops all the time. So, unfortunately I won’t be able to upload any videos from here. I’ll still make a couple, will just have to wait until I get back to upload.

Once we get off of restricted movement, we should be able to explore the island more, which I’m really looking forward to.

This is my first time south of the equator (7 degrees). And our day/night is completely flipped. It’s currently 11PM back home, but it’s 10am here. Took a few days to get my body adjusted to sleeping here. So that why I’m not online a lot, and replying mostly at night.

I love Diego Garcia! I’ve probably spent a total of about 5-6 months there. There is a guy called Blue that used to do Tattoos and did some nice work. PK’s has some good Filipino food once you’re out of ROM. The Brit Club was always a good time too. It’s a beautiful place enjoy your time there!

Thanks!

Had I stayed on my ship I would have been to DG, but I transferred the day before it left for deployment in mid-November 1979. Recall that our embassy in Iran was overrun and hostages taken 11/4/79. My ship spent 100+ consecutive days underway while deployed in the Indian Ocean then, so I caught a break with my orders. KJ, you're a Shellback now! I'm still a 'Wog (Pollywog), as I haven't been south of the equator. In the 1970s, DG was pretty barren; it sounds as though it's got more to do now, which is good for those located there. BTW, knee deep water isn't safe around dusk and around dawn - sharks feed at those hours. I saw it on Shark Week a couple years back. The filmed a man getting bitten in knee or hip deep water by a bull shark.

Yup! I’ve spent enough time working with the Navy to know that terminology before I got here. I was looking forward to it, since this is my first time South.

Yeah, you’re not allowed in the water at all after 7 pm or before 9 am I think.

Oddly enough...I have always wanted to go to Diego Garcia. Heard a bunch of stories from my Marine brethren that had been there and had a couple navy friends that were there too. I don't think it is in the cards anymore...so you will have to post pics when you get back!
