Strop Dragging My Journal Around...

Great shave, picture, and read Brad!

That a great edge to hold up that long!

Thanks, Craig! That is a good edge to hang on that long.... I would have to go through my old journal to see how many times i've shaved with it, but early on it was definitely one of my "go to's"...

Nice one Brad! I'm another who likes a bit wetter lather, and have experienced the (larger) bubbles that you talk about. I've found that, when bowl lathering, some very slow, no-pressure circles in the tub will help knock them down and get the consistency much more creamy.

Thanks for that, Josh! I had not thought at all about the pressure of my lathering....but I will now!

Man that sounds like a nice scent on that soap. And the activity (drinks on the patio) really match the shave!

The whole wet versus dry soap soap thing is really a weird one. I find that some soaps do better wetter and some do not! I have found (now mind you I am not an accomplished straight shaver) that using a dryer brush and building the lather so it is thick and voluminous is the way to go for me. Get it to the perfect volume. Wet my face before I lather my face and between passes, and I find that I get the perfect lather. Keeps it slick and doesn't lack the protection or cushion.

Hope you find the sweet spot fore you!

Thank you for that, Don. I too like to wet my face between passes...which is why maybe the added water in my lathers might be too much....

Nice shave and read. Love the name of your journal too! Creative and Tom would approve I'm sure.

Thanks, Dave!

I shortened my forum name when I joined TSC...it used to be Strop Dragging My Heart...which was sort of a double pun, as my last name is Hart. But yeah, it stuck me as funny...in a punny kinda way. ?

Shaves #210 and 211

Shave 210

Razor - Boker King Cutter
Brush - Stirling boar
Soap - Sapone di Paolo Basil and Lime
After - Pinaud Lime Sec

Well, behind again, so posting two shaves in one entry here...

After giving the Boker a few light laps on the .3 lapping film, I decided to use it again to see if it made any discernible difference. I have to admit, I could not tell. Which is not to say that 210 was a bad shave at all...but it wasn't some amazing, Oooo this edge is just brand new type of thing. Gotta stop screwing around and get a good synth finisher...

But with the lovely Sapone Di Paolo soap (such a great scent!) and the nicely matching Lime Sec, I was left smooth and smelling fresh! The photo, posted to my instagram, was in honour of my LGBTQ friends for Pride weekend - I admire their bravery in the face of many experiences of discrimination, and celebrate their right to be and love whoever the hell they want. Huzzah.

Now, I'll say this about myself...I'm not a quitter. I'm more a "stop doing something when it doesn't work, but then forget about it or ignore the fact it didn't work and go back to it" kinda guy. Like, an idiot, basically. Which is why my lineup for shave 211 included -

Razor - TI
Brush - Stirling boar
Soap - DR Harris Arlington
After - TOBS St James

- the DR Harris!

I swore off the Harris after repeated attempts to get a good lather from it...but as I was looking through my soaps, trying to make a choice this eve, I decided to give it a sniff...and what do you know, that great scent bewitched me...

Dumb.

What is with me and this soap!? Other people seem to love it...but I cannot nail it! I decided to add less water than I normally would, and ended up with it being too dry. I then tried adding more water for the second pass and ended up with this:

Bubbles galore!!

I don't know - how come I can't find a middle ground with this soap? It's either too dry or like above. Stupid.

In any case, the resulting shave was ok...but I could feel that I didn't get the cushion I needed, and the aftershave reminded me with a bit of a zing.

Arg!

Onward and shaveward.....

DR Harris wasn’t a great performer for me so I’ve never bought a full tub of it.

Nice write-up Brad...not sure on the DR Harris, but it sounds like a distant cousin of MWF. It certainly behaves the same way!

Shave #211

Canada Day Shave....

Razor - TI
Brush - vulfix badger
Soap - H et V Chestnut L'Orange
After - tatonic unscented balm (not pictured)

Well, this was some uncomfortable shave....

I don't know where to lay the blame for this one...but I know that prep time was not the culprit....I had a nice soak in the tub with a washcloth over my face and a bit of conditioner rubbed into my stubble, so the whiskers were good and soft going in.

It is possible I left this shave too long, as I believe this was 6 days of stubble I needed to mow down. But it is not the first time I've done that.

Is it possible that the OUTRAGEOUS heat here in Toronto contributed to my face being overly sensitive? I don't know if that could be the case or not...but I know that 211 was a pretty unenjoyable affair...and my face is irritated like it hasn't been after a shave in quite some time. It felt like the TI was not up to the job, which makes no sense at all...unless I managed to ruin the edge when stropping it. If I am rolling an edge 200 + shaves in, just buy me a bag of disposable Bic razors...and then kill me. Ugh.

After 3 passes, I am left with a less than smooth result and a face that is flashing like an "eat a joe's" sign. I am particularly disappointed as my lady is in town for a week starting tomorrow, and I wanted to have a nice shave to greet her with. This was one of those shaves that makes me wonder if I just don't know what I'm doing. How am I this many shaves in and having such a lacklustre result? My 100th was better than my 211th... Stupid. Oh well...I guess we all have bad shaves.

Onward and shaveward...
