Steve's Journal: The Saga Continues....

Shave Time!

Razor:
G-2 Fatboy
Blade: Parker
Brush: WWBW Jingle 2 Band Badger
Soap: Razorock Blue Fougere
AS: Razorock Blue Fougere

Haven't used the Blue Fougere in a while. I forgot how much I like this scent. I'm not sure I really know what a fougere is supposed to smell like, but I'm pretty sure this isn't it. This seems to have more of the "Blue" than fougere to it. Either way it's good. The AS has a touch of menthol too it which is nice as well.

In Other News...
Someone may be trying to hide some termite damage on a deal I have going....Trying to get to the bottom of it.

Willie World:
We're supposed to have some nice weather the rest of the week, so Willie's back will be appreciative. Maybe I'll put him to work on the bathroom remodel...

@GearNoir there's no doubt Willie could've sniffed this out...A blind man would have seen the damage! We were told they just had an inspection and it was all clear, but my client's home inspector is also license to inspect for termites and was shocked at what he found. So either someone's lying to us about the outcome of the last inspection (which was only done 3 weeks ago), or the inspector lied to the seller and didn't actually inspect anything.

I don't have 100% faith in the home inspections. When my wife bought her house she was told the jetted tub leaked under the house so she never used it. Years later when I moved in with her, I got curious. I filled it up. Nothing. Turned it on. It worked just fine. Now, the water heater wasn't even big enough to fill it up so it was still nonfunctional, but that's something else.

The home inspector my guy used is very thorough. He fills the tubs up and then checks the plumbing lol. But I have heard of things like this being very common.
More than likely this................they just do drive bys if they even do that sometimes
Yeah the house in question is vacant too so it's a definite possibility.

As someone who just went through the process of refinancing. I think they tell the inspector... we need to house to appraise for this so they get their rate. Crazy how it appraised for $2000 more than it needed too. But yet if you look on zillow etc the house apparently could have appraised for another $75k.

Actually that's illegal and is what caused the housing market to crash in the mid 2000's lol. Also you're referring to an appraiser that would place a value on a property. The bank will send that person out to make sure they aren't going to lend out more money than the home is worth. After the market crash, appraisers are now drawn from a pool. The lender can't request a specific person to do an appraiser anymore to ensure they get the number they need.

This guy was a home inspector, they're state licensed inspectors that come out to uncover any defects or issues with the property. They don't put a value on the home, they're job is to educate the potential buyer on the condition of the systems of the house (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, structural, etc.) and point out any issues that might need to be addressed.

When it comes to Zillow....I always tell people to stay away from that site lol. They very often have incorrect information, even to the point of showing that a particular property is on the market even if it isn't. The values that they give are almost always wrong too, at least in my experience. I had a listing last year that Zillow said was worth $390k, It sold for $350k and we had to negotiate it up to that price. The highest offer (out of multiple offers from multiple buyers) came in at $340k. So yeah, stay away from Zillow lol.

In my opinion, Inspectors often favor the party who is paying. I have had a few inspections that the wife and I have paid for...and I have seen other inspections that the other party has paid for. While inspectors don't put value on the home...they can come up with some pretty creative "faults" on a home so you can use it as leverage to negotiate a price on the home. For example, one inspection came back and literally the only thing the guy could come up with was that the shrubs in front of the house were too close to the structure. I mean seriously? The azaleas are too close to the house? I have seen others were they said the water heater is too old for the house (well not exactly those words), and it was still under warranty. Unless you have an inspector that YOU trust...I really don't put a lot of sock into them. The appraisers...they can really jack around the value of a home too. I know it can be unethical...but it happens. My opinion? Make sure you are the first one to get the appraisal.

@dangerousdon I agree. An inspector will often favor the person that hired them (even thought they shouldn't). I don't think it's always intentional either. I think sometimes they feel that they have to justify their cost, like with the shrub instance you referred to. They can't just show up and say everything looks great and there's no issues anywhere, otherwise people feel that they didn't get their money's worth. The key is knowing the difference between what's really important and what is being thrown in the inspection for sake of pointing things out.

I know I've been MIA the last few days. I'll try to get caught up on everyone's journals this week (I hope!), but here's the last few shaves:

Friday: No shave
Saturday: Dubl Duck+Fatboy/Feather blade, TSC Anniversary Brush, WSP Blackbeard, WSP Blackbeard AS
Sunday: Fatboy/Feather blade, WWBW 2 Band Badger, CBL Iron Throne, Nivea ASB
Monday: Fatboy/Feather blade, TSC Anniversary, Stirling Spice soap & AS

It's been a busy couple of days doing things around the house, planting this year's garden, being disappointed by Game Of Thrones lol, and hanging with Willie....A busy weekend, but a good one.

As for the shaves, the Fatboy/Feather combo was working very well and then drastically fell off. I ditched the blade after this morning's shave and will probably switch up razors for a bit. Saturday's outing with the straight razor was also disappointing. I really need to watch some videos to get a better idea of what to do. I didn't have any issues with cuts or anything, but the one pass I did didn't really feel like it did much. So I'm guessing my angle is just bad. Otherwise no blood was shed so that's a good thing.

Willie’s too Joe Cool to let his owner be snickered at by those hard, grizzled contractor types!

About the SR shave, I’d consider any pass you get through with minimal to no blood loss a success, even if you ended up not knocking much off. That’s why they call it “learning” ;)
