Slants

So Slapril comes to an end and the last shave was with the 2019 version of the Wunderbar. After showing the differences in the head on last night's post, I decided to weigh both heads, thinking that the 2019 head might be just slightly lighter. This was not the case. Both caps weighed in at .6 oz and both base plates were .5 oz. The entire head of the original Wunderbar head was 1.2 oz and the 2019 version was 1.1 oz. I have no idea how this defied math, but I weighed it three times and the results were the same.

Okay, so I was not going to fret over a difference of .1 oz and so I just left it as that and had my shave tonight. Now I know that you all were thinking that a .1 oz difference in weight and larger lather slots would somehow translate into some difference in shaves between the two razor, however that did not happen. WTG and ATG was just as smooth and efficient as the original Wunderbar and again I ended up with a two pass BBS.

I know, this was kind of an anticlimactic end to Slapril, but reviewing all my slants during the month and answering one of my most pressing question about the 2019 Wunderbarwas worth all of this.

Thanks for doing such an interesting thread!

Okay, so I promised @Dave in KY that I was going to post a couple more entries in this thread, one for a non slanted razor which I will now reveal to you why it is in this thread, and another (later) for the latest slant razor out there that bears a very close resemblance to one that @Dave in KY, @Techichi, and I love very much. More on that later when I actually receive it.

So, the non slanted razor - Now we all remember that Neo-something razor when I displayed the extreme diagonals, right? Well, it seems that the Neo folks came out with two razors of their own design that were not slanted. One is the Ebor, which is the unicorn Neo of all big time collectors. In fact very few folks actually seen a pic of it (a true unicorn). The other was the Neo-Gam regular razor, which is real confusing because the regular Neo razors were all those extreme diagonals. Anyway these were just very rare but you can find one if you search long and hard enough. So I finally found one:

Just to remind everyone what a regular regular Neo razor looked like, here it is:

The Neo regular razor on the left and the regular Neo razor on the right.

The extreme diagonal Neo had a post that was notched so you could slide the head on to the clip. For the non diagonal Neo, that post was just threaded, going completely around the notch so you could screw it to the handle:

I have this scheduled for a shave tomorrow night. I will report back on the shave. Now I just have to remember to leave the head straight when I shave.

Okay, Feather Friday has officially been postponed until tomorrow. I am sure my locked and loaded King Cobra can wait another day for something as important as the first shave of this Neo regular razor.

As always when I try out a new razor, I use a blade that is closer to done than a new one. Tonight was no exception. First stroke with the WTG pass and I suddenly remembered that the regular Neo preferred riding the base (but I never realized that since I always been concentrating on the handle being straight). Once I figured that out, the rest of the WTG pass was effortless and comfortable. I could have stopped after the WTG pass because I was already at a DFS+, but first shave and so I did my ATG pass. Again, it was effortless and I just had minimal dry touch up after that. Got a great BBS. I can see now why folks that have shaved with this version of the Neo make lofty comparisons with a Wolfman or some other high end razor.

Very interesting...I'll have to keep my eyes peeled. Good stuff, Les.

Still working on acquiring that Fatip Slant.

This Neo-Gam actually did not attract much interest. I think it was because most folks that had a saved eBay search for "vintage neo razor" or something similar had it pop up (like it did for me) and when they saw it wasn't the extreme diagonal, they just thought it was another bakelite razor not realizing that this was more rare than the extreme diagonal version (which is pretty rare already). Now you all know the secret.

I was watching it and figured it was rarer but still kicking myself for not getting a previous extreme slant one and didn't know how the regular shaved. Now I know, but still glad you have it as you are more a collector than I.

The Fatip that I have is the Originale and it is the OC version. the Gentile is the SB version. I haven't gotten around to getting the Gentile yet as those had alignment and QC problems in the initial release. Besides, Fatip made it's money from it's OC razors and the Originale does not disappoint.

But both say Gentle I think.....will look later or hope Les clarifies.....Is the difference between Gentle and Original the comb?

Oh I thought the Gentile was the closed comb one. I believe Maggard has "Gentile" in the title of the listing, but the box in the picture says "Testina Originale."
