Slants

Not all slants are aggressive, however in answer to your original question, I have a spot under my chin where my hair grows in three different directions and because of old age, there is a lot of loose skin in the area. What I find I have to do is to go WTG/ATG/XTG in just that area while stretching my skin as much as I can. Slants are more efficient and so it works better for me, but this is the same thing I do with any razor from my OneBlade down to my Tech.

My Fatip slants arrived not too long ago.

I've used the OC. It's a terrific razor in all respects.
  • No blade feel at all with a brand new Polsilver.
  • Very smooth feeling on my skin.
  • Zero alignment issues of any kind.
  • Amazingly efficient.
  • No tendency to jump up and bite me.
  • The combs are not noticeable at all.
  • The handle is a great size for me and not slippery at all.
  • No issues with the finish.
I found nothing about the Fatip Open Comb Slant to not like.

The Gentile version will be up sometime soon.

Happy shaves,

Jim

@Chan Eil Whiskers, where yo been hiding all this time? I thought something was strange when suddenly there was some activity on my thread that died six months ago. Folks over here are a bunch of whimps and not into slants too much. Good to find another fan.

Oh yeah, I guess I should make this response relevant - I just bought the Lo Storto Originale (OC) because Fatip had a long history of OC razors and I did not want to buy both types because Fatip also had a long history with QC problems in their initial batches. Lucky for me since many problems have been identified with the Gentile, but almost none with the Originale. I have about a half dozen shaves in with my Fatip so far and must say that it is one of the better OC slants I have shaved with. Despite the aggressiveness that comes with an OC razor, this razor was very smooth and efficient. It helps significantly that this is a really beautiful razor. I would rank it just slightly behind my Valencia in the way of a complete package which includes good looks, smoothness, and efficiency.

Currently I have decided to break up my boredom that comes along with this social distancing thing by declaring Slapril, kind of like Slantember, but in April. I counted all my front line and near line slants and came up with 30 of them and there is 30 days in April and so why not.....

I kind of have a set rotation for the month, but I will rearrange it so that the Fatip and Valencia goes on subsequent days so I can go head to head. Hmmm, maybe I should shave wit all my OC slants in the same week to compare them all.

Now get back to work and report on the Gentile!

I was pretty skeptical about the whole slant concept...

As well you should be. The concept would be more of a factor............................................if your strokes were 14 ft. and the blade weighed 80 lbs. like those of an average guillotine. :D

When did you sneak in here Jim? Great to hear from you and as always great knowledge!

I am fortunate to have a Merkur 37C, 39C and an iKon X3. I really enjoy slants but usually don't go with Nacets or Kai as my blade of choice in them. I will have to do that next time around. As for my fav of the three it is the X3 which is mild yet quite an excellent razor.

Well that's one approach to draw more people to the thread 😂 I prefer my Krect Spiral Slant and love the shaves from it. I'd have more slants but late to the hunt of them and the owners are normally very proud of them when pricing.

My slant shaves just aren’t as comfortable as my non-slant shaves. Granted I’ve only tried a German 37 and an iKon X3.

If you have any new revelations after shaving with all of your top slants, I'd love to hear.

The Krects are fantastic shavers. I don't know how they could have gotten a full torqued slant designed on such a thin cap. One thing I have noticed recently is that the more unusual slants are hard to come by these days and the only ones you will find are variations of the Merkur 37 (Hoffritz, Coles, Pomco, etc) and folks really do want a car payment for one of those. Luckily, I got in early and acquired a lot of the more vintage ones.

Good for you to have gotten in early Les. Neo Lux's have had me curious of late but when you see them they are pricey as most rare ones are. You should slowly go thru your rotation showcasing them here. Finally got my first Tnnser razor operational. Cheers

Okay, so once again, this social distancing stuff is forcing me to talk to myself too much and I get bored real quick. I gathered up all my front line and near line OC slants and will be shaving with them for the week and comparing it with the Lo Storto Originale.

This is the line up for the weekdays (L to R):

PAA BOCS, Fasan Double Slant, ATT S2 on a Hawaiian Curly Koa handle, Fatip Lo Storto Originale, Valencia OC slant

DSC03157.JPG

First up tonight was the PAA BOCS which is a clone of the first version Fasan Slant. This slant probably contributed greatly to giving slants a bad rep. It is very light with significant blade feel, and even after trying different angles, you still have significant blade feel. the only difference changing the angle does is to make it more or less efficient. I enjoy the shaves with this one, but don't reach for it too often.

I've only had the pleasure of using a Merkur 37C so far. I got it out of curiosity and the search of a more aggressive razor. Ultimately I feel a little let down, I get more aggression from my Rockwell 6S with the R4 plate. But I must say it's a damn smooth shaver. At some point I'll pick out another one in hopes of finding a slant that fits what I'm looking for.

Day 2 of my OC slants . this kind of seem like undercards leading up to the big showdown between the Valencia and Lo Storto Originale. Tonight was the Fasan Double Slant. To be honest, Fasan called all their slants double slants, but the name just stuck to their second version because of the significant curvature of the base plate compared to their first version.

Where last night's shave with the PAA clone had significant blade feel no matter how much you played with the angle, the Fasan was just the opposite. There was almost no blade feel at any time. This is a very smooth shaver. The flip side of this is that it is not as efficient as the PAA clone. It took the full three passes plus touch up to get a decent shave, but the work was worth it.

Tonight's OC slant shave was with my ATT S2. Being too cheap to get a S1/S2 set, I was able to acquire an S2 head at one time and then an S1 base plate later. This is a good combination for non slanted folks to try out as both the S1 and S2 give excellent comfortable and efficient shaves. The S1 is a little smoother, but I am comparing OC slants and so the S2 got the nod. The feel of the S2 is similar to a Merkur 37 except it has an open comb. there is slightly more blade feel than the Fasan of last night, but far less than the PAA of the night before. It is definitely a two pass plus minimal touch up BBS. Definitely a great lead up to the ultimate shave off over the next two nights.

So the showdown between the Lo Storto Originale and Valencial finally arrived. The Valencia won the coin toss and has elected to defer the shave until tomorrow. The Lo Storto has chosen the tallow soap.

First off, the Lo Storto Originale is a very good looking razor, being heavily chromed and with the almost barber pole handle. The comb is sturdy and rounded, but there isn't much twist to the head. This razor definitely exudes modern day BLING. 🤩

The Lo Storto got off to a rough first stroke until I remembered that it likes riding the cap with the comb barely touching the face. After that, WTG pass went very well. ATG pass went equally well and there was not much left for an XTG pass or serious touch up. Overall, the shave was very smooth and efficient. I got a very comfortable two pass with minimal touch up BBS.

The Valencia definitely has it's work cut out out for itself tomorrow.
