Rich's Journal: Adventures with Life and Sharp things

September 4 1781: Los Angeles is founded with a population of 44! The name was much longer, but eventually was shortened to two letters. (Fits better on hats and shirts)
Today I used King Gillette shave gel with a Buckeye “Busch Special” straight. Clearly this gel wasn’t intended for use with a straight, but one how I managed to emerge undamaged. Finished with Brut. Good ‘nuff.

In light of today’s Ohio State vs Grambling football game, the Buckeye razor makes a return. A further extended stropping really brought out the edge! It must be just enough to tune the already good edge. Soap today came from last summers Ohio Shavers Meetup-Up. Shannon’s Soapery creates a fine environment for the shave. Lucky Tiger rounds out a pretty good, nay, great shave.
This years Ohio Meetup is set for the 20th of this month and several of the Cadre will be in attendance. I am really looking forward to seeing you guys there!

Today I used CBL’s Doc Holliday with a Gillette Old Style. Performance of the soap seems better than previous bases. The peach forward fragrance was quite subtle off the soap and through the shave, but it really came out with the aftershave. Almost too much so, but I’ll try it again so see if it wasn’t just a surprise. It received spousal approval right away and she did not perceive the peach as much as I did.
September 2nd is the date the Japanese signed their unconditional surrender aboard the USS Missouri. Thank a veteran, especially our remaining WW2 vets.

Mad respect for all vets who have served in harm’s way. This peacetime vet salutes each and every one of you. 🫡🇺🇸

See you there! TBH, this is the first time ever that I’m excited to go to Columbus. I was there as recently as 1981. Has it changed much? 😁

521 years ago Michelangelo’s David was unveiled in Florence Italy to immediately acclaim. Commemorating this event we used Fine Accouterments Italian Citrus with a ‘46-‘47 Gillette Ariatocrat. Folks sometimes comment on the 17 foot masterpiece’s undercarriage and their comparatively diminutive proportions. Well, question no further my brothers! We now know that the Air Conditioner at the museum in Florence, where the statue is on display, is quite strong.

in an Empire State of Mind with a Lady Gillette razor on this 9-11 shave. While I recognize the day as a series of huge downers of great historical significance. I choose to think more about my beloved Sister-in-law. The best thing that’s ever happened ever happened to my dear Baby Brother.

The shave of 1812:
Today marks the Bombardment of Fort McHenry during the Battle of Baltimore in the War of 1812. Isn’t it interesting how we define our history in terms of wars? I was musing over this whilest shaving today.

Feather SS - Kai ProTouch
Reclaimed Lather
Family Spice - decanted experiment

All in all a satisfactory shave. Hard to get a bad one from this razor, shy of bloodshed.

Last night I found a loose razor in a box. It’s a lion brand, bon3 scaled, mid-century razor that just piqued m6 interest. I ran it on an ILR, stropped the living bejeezus out of it and deployed it with Doc Holliday with good results. It has a wonky bevel that will need reset, but it was a pretty good shave. Today in 1620, the Mayflower sets sail for America with 102 passengers. It’s amazing these people made it for 60 day in a ship measuring less than 100 feet by 20 feet.

Today in history is the Air Force’s birthday in 1947. My Dad entered the Army in 1940 and was a part of the Army Air Corps. He then was part of the Army Air Force to the end of the war, reactivated to the Air Force until 1953 during the Korean police action. Here are a couple really old pictures of his assignment at Yokota Air Base in Japan.

Today’s shave was a simple Noble Otter Texaus and Schick adjustable shave. Followed with Ghost Town Barber. All in all an excellent shave.

The shave cream is still made

Today I thought I’d rehearse how I might shave when we get to Japan. I’m taking a small container of soap and a tiny brush. I’ll have a tech with me, but if I can’t find blades, I’ll have to use the razors provided by the hotel. I presume they will resemble Bic disposables. Loading from the tiny container will require some dialing in, but I am impressed with how well the Bic shaves.

Today marks the date the USS Constitution was launched in 1794, entered service in 1795 and still commissioned today. It was the first of 6 ships commissioned to re-start the US Navy after it was disbanded at the end of the revolutionary war. Fascinating stuff! I used RazoRock Black Bay with a Thiers straight. Experimenting with using a naked knot for lathering purposes to save packing space for the trip. I’m wondering from you navy guys, does this mean the Navy has two birthdays?Untitled design.png
