Nurse Dave's Journal

Oh sure, both you AND google knew about it.
Actually, I made soap as a science project in 8th grade, and soapwort turned up in researching the accompanying paper. I got a C, which was kind, because I still didn't understand what science actually was. I just did a research paper and made soap. Totally missed the point of the project.

So remember right before our trip I was working my dark side of the moon off because there was a new initiative I was in charge of that was supposed to go live while I was gone? Ya well, that was a waste of my time. Friday I got back to see nothing happened. There were a couple of managers that heard my displeasure, but they don't report to me so all I can do is tell them to get their act together. But I'm seeing an interesting phenomenon that is linked to COVID. I call it post-COVID get the heck outta here. I was infected myself with this. People hadn't traveled for so long and after COVID slowed down, the regulatory agencies picked their surveys back up and other things. Across the board, we're seeing people out on PTO for lengths of time that would have been unusual pre-COVID. I just talked to a senior leader who is going to Europe for 3 weeks. It's been decades since he's taken that much time off. Anyway, hopefully after all the kids are back in school we'll see more people at work.

Oh ya, I shaved with this stuff.

I'm entitled to a long vacation....but death to anyone else trying that sort of thing.

And like Alan Shepard Put a photo with your face as "Mood of the Day"

During this period, his secretary Gaye Alford had two "mood-of-the-day" photographs taken of Shepard, one of a smiling Al Shepard, and the other of a grim-looking Commander Shepard. To warn visitors of Shepard's mood, she would hang the appropriate photograph on the door of her boss's private office

Drama at work is intensifying. Starting to think it might be one of those times where some rise to the top while others struggle to stay out of the drain. Luckily I'm nowhere near the drain.

Hey, Dave. Still haven't bought a watch.

So I had an appointment with our COO set up to let her know some of the stuff going on. Instead, she popped into my office for 5min. That's all I needed. And it reminded me there are those people who just get it. All you need is the briefest of summaries with bullet points and they see the whole picture. And half-sentences and looks are enough to communicate full ideas. And even better, every sentence can be a different topic and they follow right along. Man, what a pleasure it is when you can work with someone like that. Then you don't need a 1/2 hour meeting. To top it all off, I found out yesterday that she's a red wine and scotch drinker. Not generally peated scotch, but I'm not going to hold that against her.

In other news, our company has 5 clinics on Maui and operates the island's hospital system. One of the clinics is gone now as well as our dialysis center. It makes me proud to see their reaction to events like this. They are already working on locating all staff, relocating staff that are able to areas of need, and donating to support and relief efforts as well as soliciting matching donations from staff nationwide. My heart goes out to those trying to get through the events there.
