Natterings of a Nasal Barbarian

Nice shave Jeff. Need to get my Berkeley Shave selector out for a shave again. Identical look to that cooper but with added adjustability.
The Berkeley’s are cool razors. They’re getting scarcer on the Forums and the Bay. I used to own a Doehler‘r Adjustable, but sold mine on the bay recently. It was mint. Also mfg under the Ranger name. The Berkeley has a thicker handle. The Cooper doesn’t have the adjustable shim.

Welcome to Single Edge Sunday! I was fortunate to acquire this Eveready Stropping Outfit about 9 months ago. The kit dates to the early 50s. It contains both a leather strop, a stropping tool, and a ‘Jewel’ Streamline razor. The Eveready ‘Jewel’ Razor is in like new condition. It’s not a particularly rare razor, but is an exemplary shaver. The shave is comparable to a Gem ClogPruf. I like the shorter handle on the ‘Jewel’. This is a great head shaver. For today’s shave I selected my MrEE Knurled Aluminum Handled Brush, rapidly becoming one of my favorites, a prodigious lather maker with great backbone. Proraso Green enhanced with 3 drops of M-Bomb lathered up beautifully with it.

I enjoy shaving with Gem blades, but really like the PTFE coated Pella Gem blades. I have more than enough to last until they throw dirt on my coffin. Don of Technichi Shave introduced me to them. They tend to last for 4-6 shaves For me, keeping in mind that I face and head shave daily. Today’s shave went well. I began with an iced water rinse prior to lathering up both mug and noggin. Pass #1(WTG) went well, although not as close as I get with a Feather Super in my AC razors. Whisker reduction continued with pass #2 (XTG), leaving me with only some selective buffing around my usual problem areas for pass #3 (ATG). The Alum check left me with some residual heat around my Adam’s Apple, but otherwise, another delightful BBS. I feel clean, velveteen smooth, cool and refreshed.

RAZOR: Eveready Jewel Streamline
BLADE: Pella PTFE Gem
BRUSH: MrEE Knurled Aluminum Handle w/ Hybrid Knot
PREP: Iced water rinse
CREAM: Proraso Green enhanced w/ 3 drops of M-Bomb
POSTSHAVE: Cold water wash with Glyce Glycerin soap followed by Thayers Lavender WH and Fine Accoutrements Platinum AS Splash. Finished with A&E Post-Shave Serum.

As much as I have wanted and tried single edge blades that fit into Gems and the like...I can get a smooth shave...but at a price paid in blood and irritation. I just can't seem to get them to work for me. Glad you can though. Your parade of good looking and interesting razors continues! Thanks for posting!

You’re welcome Don! My dad used to shave with a Clogpruf. He passed away in 2013 at 99.

I know everyone talks about Wool Fat Friday, but I’m declaring this Mitchell’s Monday. I’ve been neglecting my #1 favorite soap. There’s nothing that compares to MWF spiced 6 drops of M-Bomb. Now I know everyone loves those stinky PAA soaps. I need to stay away from smelly soaps due to my SWMBO’s fragrance allergy. Mitchell’s is the perfect soap. Great post shave feel and minimal to virtually non-existent odor when working the same puck after a few days. For the shave today, I decided on a Gillette.. My favorite Gillettes are my Single Rings, my Big Fellow, and my New Standard. Since I've recently shaved with the first two, I selected the New Standard for today’s shave. This little 58 gram wonder feels great in the hand and delivers a first rate shave.

The brush selected was the Alpha Shaving T-400 Tribute with the 26mm two band Badger ferrule. Fine Accoutrements Fresh Vetiver AS Splash and A&E Post-Shave Serum completed the software selections. After the shower, the shave began with the usual cold water rinse. Face and dome lathering with this huge 26mm fan knot was such a luxurious pleasure. MWF just feels great, and leaves ones skin feeling great. Now it’s time to mention this 99 year old razor (1921). The New Standard just shaves so well for me! With a Feather blade it delivers the goods while singing the stubble reduction song. I would shave with this razor much more regularly, if I didn’t have so many great DE and SE safety razors already. In any case, three slow, relaxing passes later (WTG, XTG, ATG) put the baby to bed!
I feel cool, clean, smooth and refreshed!

RAZOR: Gillette New Standard

The Eveready ‘Jewel’ Razor
I always though that the Ever-Ready version was the Streamline and the GEM version was called the Jewel?

The streamline is arguably the smoothest of all the GEM/E-R razors. It's my favorite.

Although I didn’t want to, I couldn’t help myself and decided to shave with this razor that was still in the restoration process. The Schick Type F is a a safety razor that is highly sought after by collectors. It’s production process was quite limited by the metal resource demands of WWII.

It was produced from November 1940 through February 1941 when production was stopped. There are a limited number of these razors available thus the cachet for collectors. According to data from Worthpoint, razors in mint condition with the original case have sold for as much as $350.

Then there’s my razor. It originally belonged to the father of my next-door neighbor, and had spent the last 20 years in his garage attic along with much of his father’s original belongings. It had seen some hard times apparently traveling with his Dad throughout the Pacific WWII theater until landing in the attic. It was given to me by my neighbor for helping clean out the aforementioned attic. I still need to spend some time with some 2000 grit sandpaper evening out many of the dings it accumulated over the last 80 years. It is cleaning up very nicely.

The shave, however, was quite disappointing. The razor was unbelievably mild with a Chinese Schick blade. My MWF lather was thick and yogurty, but the danged razor just didn’t seem capable of cutting my whiskers effectively. Next shave I’ll use a Schick Proline B-20. Maybe that’ll make a difference. Usually I dump any razor that doesn’t shave well, but given how pretty this one is, and in the interest of fairness, I’ll continue shaving with it until I can get it dialed in.

I guess for the price I shouldn’t complain. What is really remarkable was that after 4 passes (WTG, ATG, ATG, ATG) the Alum revealed no heat anywhere. After all is said and done, the shave was a CCS. Hopefully, as I learn my way around this razor my shaves will improve. I feel frustrated, clean and refreshed, but definitely not smooth!

RAZOR: Schick Type F
BLADE: Chinese Schick
PREP: Cold water rinse
BRUSH: Omega Pro48 Boar
SOAP: Mitchell’s Wool Fat
POSTSHAVE: Cold water wash with brush squeezings followed by Thayers Lavender WH and Fine Accoutrements Fresh Vetiver AS Splash. Finished with A&E Post-Shave Serum.
