Shave #77:

Well, except for a few more samples sent by Dave, my new soap adventures are soon coming to a close!

Today is a specialty day though, and I have to look sharp, so I went back to a soap I’ve already used. It’s still “new” to me, I’ve only used it once, but it was an easy choice on performance, scent, and post shave feel.

Today I chose Grooming Department: Absinthe & Leather. Keeping with the Aventus theme that’s popped up today, I used a hearty dash of CC Venture to finish the shave off.

I did a 2 pass today, with a lot of careful cleanup. The Feather was wonderfully smooth for the XTG. I’m still experimenting with towel stropping and very careful palm stropping (just a handful of passes each). I’m not really sure what the palm stropping is supposed to look like with the Feather’s particular angle. I’m trying not to ruin the edge at the same time lol.

The prewar Fat Handled Tech took the ATG and clean up. Smooth as ever. It helped me push the shave quite a bit, but I did pay for it a little anyway with some raw/tender spots. Enough that I had to bring out the alum.

Lather soak, cold rinse, alum, cold rinse, CC Venture and a little moisturizer, and I’m golden. 100% BBS. I hope it’s a lasting one for my meeting this evening.

So why is today a special day? I guess special may not be the right word, perhaps just an important one. I’ve been “under care” of my presbytery for about 2 and 1/2 years. This means, basically, that I’m going through the approved ordination process for the Presbyterian Church. The chairs for the Candidate Committee (and other committees for that matter) change every few years to keep things fresh. Last year this was the case (a new Chair for the Candidate Committee) and they’ve implemented a new action where the committee personally checks in with each candidate, face to face, annually. Previously it was just a written communication.

Well, there will be a Presbytery meeting this weekend nearby (Tahoe), so my turn came up to be seen. Thusly, my afternoon and evening will be spent driving a couple of hours to the meeting, having said meeting, then making the trip back. I even got the day off of work to accommodate. Luckily, the missus decided to make a day trip out of it, so we’ll all go up and make a day of it after the kids get out of school. Hopefully it will be a pleasant trip, lol.

Scheermonnik: Delfts Wit definitely deserved the time I gave it this morning!

Official scent notes: features & a woody scent with notes of Italian Bergamot, Apple wood, Tonka Bean, Patchouli, Cedarwood, and Oakmoss, all finished with Cardamom, Vanilla Bourbon and Allspice.

This stuff smells sophisticated, luxurious, and deep. The scent really gets unleashed with lathering and it does not disappoint one bit. I didn’t catch all the notes, but for me, I got a lot of bergamot, Tonka, and Cedar, with a very nice underline of warm vanilla. The scent was also kind of reminiscent of a cured tobacco, ever so slightly smoky. I enjoyed it very much!

I'm glad you decided to stop doing crazy things and shaved with soap again! This one in particular sounds really good!

Yup, I'm a nerd.

I'm also a bit of a nerd Doug, so I enjoyed the history lesson as well haha!

Thanks for all the encouragement guys! Everything went well. This new Candidate Committee is a nice an friendly group of men, of a wide range of ages and backgrounds. It was a good check-in meeting. The trip itself was lovely, crossing over the Sierra Nevada mountain range from smoggy Nor Cal, into woodsy Placer County, then into Nevada. The family had a good time too with a little dinner out afterword before the drive back.

As for the shave, it was a 2 pass, but honestly, almost 24 hours later, there wasn’t much to do. I was still DFS in almost all areas. But I did a careful shave anyway, with my face still a little tender from pushing it yesterday and the fact that my stubble at this stage (what little was showing) is quite difficult and stubborn.

I picked up one of the soap samples Dave sent, Oleo Soapworks: Melonade. It was a decent soap, scented very lightly with a smell I would say is reminiscent of the way a watermelon Jolly Rancher tastes, but watered down to a hint. Otherwise it’s a clean, almost scentless soap, moderate slickness. I did have to go a little heavy on product to get it to cushion up a bit more.

Two days left in the work week, with nothing particular going on, that I’m aware of. Looking forward to Sunday. Happy Friday though!

I have been very intrigued by Oleo. I will need to visit them soon. A jolly rancher watermelon scent does sound nice though

I really hate being in the car, but that drive into Nevada sure is a pretty one.

Yep! You can feel the CA depression lifting off you as you get deeper into the range...just like it layers back on the opposite way when you sight the smog, lol.

Nice shave and glad to hear that the meeting went well with the commission! I've actually got that soap inbound and am looking forward to it! (I love watermelon jolly ranchers!)

Cool! Interested to hear your take!

SR/Shavette only Saturday!

Simple and careful 2 pass today with the Feather resulting in overall SAS/CCS.

Today’s soap was a sample of Barrister & Mann: Promises. It was a very herbal soap once lathered (not overpowering though). It’s official scent profile is “bergamot, honey, whiskey lactone, peat, nutmeg, and more”. I wasn’t able to pick out much other than the bergamot and nutmeg. I got a light hint of some kind of mint as well.

The lather was reasonably slick, though a bit drying. As with anything, it takes a bit of time to adjust to a new soap, one can’t necessarily expect to master it with the first lather. Today it didn’t seem to make a good SR soap, definitely fine for DE shaving though.

The shave went OK. I’m finding that tackling daily shaves seems to be more of a challenge than every other day shaves. The hair just feels more resistant to being cut and it takes more work to get the same good shave. So the Feather (and user) felt like it struggled a bit today.

All good though, in the end it’s just another shave in the books! Today is my Friday, so...casual shave Friday I guess? Lol!

Happy "Friday" Chris! Honestly, I'm not a huge fan of shaving everyday. I like getting four shaves in a week. That way it gives my skin a day to recover. I might shave two days consecutively, for some reason usually job related, once a week, but that is it. I'm not an overly huge B&M fan. Not that it's a bad soap...it just doesn't wow me in performance for some reason. But man...they sure do have a ton of scents! Have a great weekend!

Well Don, I’m quite new to the every day shave. I used to do every other with a back to back Sat/Sun. I wanted to work through my soaps though and start my days off well, so a couple weeks ago I decided to make the change. It’s gone much better than I’d hoped for the most part. It does seem as I mentioned, that I just can’t get as close or the BBS doesn’t last as long with the new routine (or maybe I’m just getting more picky). I don’t mind it all that much I suppose, given the enjoyment I’m getting.

Nice shave. Bummer that the soap was drying to your face.

Indeed! Thanks!

Had to wake up early today (church of course!), but I gave myself the time to luxuriate in the shave.

Today’s soap of choice was AOS Sandalwood cream and it’s accoutrements. I’ve missed this usual Sunday morning shave to try out the new stuff. It was nice to get back to it!

Having come almost full circle now through a variety of new soaps, I can say that AOS still does not disappoint. The scent lingers throughout the shave, the lather is still pretty relatively slick and protective, and the post shave feeling from the entire regimen is very nice.

The shave was a 3 pass today, first 2 WTG and XTG with the Feather, and ATG and cleanup with the Tech. All the passes were smooth, with minimal irritation when the alum was applied.

Finished off with some preshave oil and a massage of balm, both AOS Sandalwood as well.

Happy Sunday all. I hope you find rest this day and the Lord orders and blesses your steps.
