If you have to do something...

Going back through my 12 Whiskeys of Christmas sampler in reverse order. First time through was neat, this time I’m adding a a few drops of water. Not changing my rankings though.

Tonight 1/3 of #3: Woodford Reserve Double Oaked Kentucky Straight Bourbon

Thankfully, still smells amazing, just bumped up a notch and brighter! Rich, caramel/toffee, buttery, smooth, with an edge of vanilla. The burnt note is gone from the nose.

Taste? Fiery orange. Still tastes like an Old Fashioned. The char note seems to be almost completely eradicated from the taste as well! The oak plays briefly and lightly. Not quite as warming and hearty as before. Super smooth still once that brief fire fades. Tough call...this is actually good either way - neat or with water! I’d have to say, this comes in a very close second to the Buffalo Trace distillery offerings. Very close. If they shaved about $10 off the price, it might come in first.

Tacking in my final rankings list from the initial tastings to add notes about whether I preferred them neat, with water, or over ice.

I'm a complete novice when it comes to whiskeys really. I know what I know. I'm definitely a bourbon/rye/irish whiskey kind of guy. I'm very limited on the scotch side of things. But in my experience, I have never met an American whiskey that ever thought was better adding water to it. Some I thought were better served cold or with ice. But those tend to lean towards the lesser quality of whiskeys. Sometimes I will add an ice cube to something I probably shouldn't. But that's just me. Now my Irish Whiskeys are a different story. As long it is quality...just a dribble of water does open them up. I imagine scotches are the same.

I’m still pretty newbie on these grounds too. It’s been a fun thing to dive into so far but realistically I’m flyin blind a bit! Honestly once these samples from Dave are gone, it’s back to one or two bottles at a time...which doesn’t lend itself to a vast variety of experiences very quickly, lol.

Haven’t tried an Irish Whiskey yet. Anything good value that you might recommend?

Shave #28 (453 Open Blade Shaves) of 2021:

Gear: Henson AL (Medium), Feather blade, Stirling 2-band synth brush, CBL Money tonsorial soap, homemade witch hazel/aloe mix, Skin Bracer AS, and Atelier Vanille Insensee to finish!

Better night’s sleep since the wind wasn’t throwing things around.

Nice shower n shave this morning to help wake me up. Light but warming scents was the theme.

Still getting rain! Yippee! Some winds still going on, not nearly as bad as yesterday’s though.

Is the power still out at work? We’ll see!

Have a great Thursday all...almost there!

Honestly...most Irish Whiskeys that are in the $20 - $40 range are...Okay. You have to reach up to the $60 range for anything exceptional. In that range my hands down favorite is ReadBreast 12. Man that is some REALLY good stuff. Green Spot is in that range too and is on par with the RB 12...just slightly different profiles. The Irish Whiskey I have currently is Yellow Spot. It's better than both of those...but it's also a lot more expensive. I have it because it was a birthday present. It's also something that I am not going to have every night. Savoring that. I just drink it neat. But if you can swing a bottle of RB 12...I HIGHLY recommend it. HIGHLY recommend it.

Tonight 1/3 of #2: Grangestone Highland Single Malt Scotch

The buttery malt are pretty forward on this scent with the water added. It’s light and pleasingly fragrant. Other scents that may have normally been apparent are now washed out or masked.

Still the same opening as far a taste, just upped a bit - firey, slick, oily malt and butter with that bitter orange followup. The woodiness on the back end is charred up a bit. The more delicate flavors and hints I got while tasting neat are mostly gone. Still a nice sip but not as nice as it was.

Gear: Henson AL (Medium), Feather blade, Yaqi Sagrada Familia synth brush, CBL Money tonsorial soap, homemade witch hazel/aloe mix, Old Spice AS, and Stirling Glastonbury to finish!

Fridaaaaayyy! Tired and ready for tomorrow’s (hopefully) alarm free sleep in!

Fantastic shave with the Henson this morning. I think a Feather blade is the perfect combination for this razor. Hole in the Money tonsorial is a bit bigger...but let’s be real, it is a tonsorial puck. Still have a ways to go! Tomorrow is definitely a cheat day though. Not sure what soap will be used but up on deck and the real star of the shave will be the graciously gifted:

Graydog Art Deco
14C4E40B-6B1D-4511-B309-B7730267720E.jpeg

It needed a name as much as the SV group buy brush did. Made out of Hudson River mahogany and maple it is very representative of an interpretation of the Art Deco style to me. It’s an understated piece that pictures don’t really do justice to with just how gorgeous the woods grains are highlighted. It’s almost Modern in style but not quite. Really humbled and pleased to have this work of art!

Have a great Friday all...nearly to that glorious weekend!

Shave #30 (453 Open Blade Shaves) of 2021:

Gear: Blackland Vector, Schick Proline blade, Graydog Art Deco brush, SV 70th soap, homemade witch hazel/aloe mix, SV 70th AS, and Guerlain Vetiver to finish!

Yesterday ended on a really great note. I forgot that the missus and I had made some evening/dinner plans with a friend couple to celebrate a major career change/job offer my guy friend got. We ordered dinner from a local Hispanic restaurant (I had some superb tamales), set up a little dining spot in their garage, had some drinks and conversation while we ate, and played some tabletop games. 5 hours well spent.

Nice, alarm-free wake up this morning.

Gave the Graydog Art Deco as swanky of a maiden shave as I could manage...it felt and performed flawlessly. Everything I was hoping for and more. The handle shape is bang on comfortable and is ultra light. The faux horse knot installed is exactly like the Yaqi pony knot I love so much...like lathering with a pillow but with the usual exceptional modern synth performance. I may have a new King of the brush stable!

Getting some chores done now. Back to my 5 day work week tomorrow.

Have a great Saturday all!

Tonight 1/3 of #2: Naked Grouse Blended Malt Scotch

There and Back Again, a Whiskey Drinker’s Tale.

Took over a month but I’ve finally done it! I made it through my 12 samples and back (and am 2/3rds of the way through my journey)! All that’s left is to polish off the last third of each sample, over ice.

Over been looking forward to getting back to this one almost as soon as I first tasted it. Same price range as Monkey Shoulder but blows it out of the water in my book! Let’s see how it fairs with some water.

Brightened a bit but the novel and lovely sherry note is somewhat diminished. Underneath is a distinct butter smell. The oak smell is very incognito on the end of the nose but the previously noticeable raspberry scent is gone and there’s just a general light fruitiness.

The taste? Still that firey kick but it’s more brief. Still fairly mellow and smooth overall. There’s a nice sherry dryness on the tongue. I get a very quick squirt of raspberry. The water seems to have brought out a bit of char/smoke too along with a slightly woody finish. Not too shabby! Still better neat though.

Oh wow...I forgot to post yesterday’s shave! The Nurse fella must be rubbing off on me...

Yesterday:
Shave #31 (453 Open Blade Shaves) of 2021:

Gear: Henson AL (Medium), Feather blade, Sagrada Familia synth brush, CBL Money tonsorial soap, homemade witch hazel/aloe mix, Pinaud Citrus Musk, and Carolina Herrera Bad Boy to finish!

Today:
Shave #32 (453 Open Blade Shaves) of 2021:

Gear: Henson AL (Medium), Feather blade, Stirling 2-band synth brush, CBL Money tonsorial soap, homemade witch hazel/aloe mix, Barbasol Pacific Rush AS, and Bvlgari Man Glacial Essence to finish!

Great shaves both days. Same Henson/Feather combo I’ve been using off and on the last month or more now...still delivering! Went all aquatic today. Glacial Essence smells like a sophisticated version of Barbasol PR to me...excellent!

The multi day rain storm we were supposed to have had throughout last week petered out fully Wednesday without further incident. Good because the infrastructure could repair, bad because we’re gonna need a heck of a lot more rain if we don’t want another firey summer.

Is it Friday yet? 😂

Have a great Monday all!

The "feast or famine" pattern of rainfall experienced in some parts of the country can be maddening. Here's hoping you get some long, slow rains before summer.
