Grooming Dept Soap release...

I like the duck fat ones a lot. I am intrigued by his duck fat and tallow base, that one should ROCK.

I am finding that as I "mature" in this hobby I am most interested in finding soaps that offer unique lather. I also enjoy the complex scent creations but most soaps are too weakly scented for me so the scent becomes less relevant. Grooming Department has some unique and complex scents and most I have tried are either strong enough or complex enough to stand out.

Grooming Department fills a really unique place in the artisan soap world. Rather than offer just one or two bases, he offers several exotic bases. Even if you can resist buying soap based on scent descriptions you just HAVE to try the different exotic bases. He gets a bit of bad mouthing for not having soap in stock but I think his unique niche will keep people coming back.
I was wondering about the 2 I sent you and what your thoughts were on the lather.

The two you sent me are the only duck fat ones I have ever tried. I was given a couple other scents some time back but they were straight up tallow. Of the two I definitely prefer the the duck fat both in terms of performance and the scent. Specifically, the duck fat produces a denser, almost sticky lather that is quite slick without needing a lot of water. The lather CAN take on a good amount of lather but it is slick even without the water. One issue i found with not hydrating the lather enough is that is sticks to the razor edge and is hard to rinse clean.

The Citric met and exceeded expectations on all fronts. A very nice citrus forward with a bit of freshness or aquatic almost, at least to my nose. The beef & lamb tallow combination was great in that I believe it was a bit easier and just as dense and full bodied as GD’s other Tallow soap bases. An excellent performer. Then again, I wasn’t expecting anything less.

Just an FYI that I saw through the Book of Faces. Mo has signed up with a second vendor. IB will soon be selling GD products.

Nice but he can't keep them in stock at WCS now, adding another doesn't help stocking where he's at now any. Only 3 non favorites available there right now although I like the Elan

Yea I’ll agree with you there. Also still the issue of his continued tweaking of bases and/or development of “new” ones. Not to mention scents brought out or left behind. As has been mentioned previously, it’s a bit hard to keep track of.

Can hope it’s a movement toward securing a solid foundation for full time, larger production soap making. That’s just speculation at this point though.

Agreed, I hope that's the direction he's going to get to ?

I just want a tub of Angel, then I don’t care what he does.

Poor KJ.

Good thread guys, i was looking for some information on this artisan. I don't know too much about Grooming Department's offerings and the info here has filled a gap ??. Might have to try Angel, if it's possible to get a hold of!

Yep. Mo threw out a line and hooked me, again. He sent out an email to the subscribers of his website about a week ago and mentioned that the new Barbershop release today in the Vegan Janus base was nearly identical in performance to his Tallow based formulas if not better. I said to meself “Preposterous! This is Blasphemy! Utter nonsense and pure ridiculousness.” So, me being the soap “Whoua” (as they say in Brooklyn) that I am, I purchased it. I’m going to lay this silly proclamation to rest once and for all! I mean it.....
