Grooming Dept Soap release...

I got 1 vegan and 1 tallow and will be my 1st time trying his soap. Hope they come in a reasonable time frame without the drama I've read about.

The Tallow is my preferred ingredient in a shave soap. My skin really gets along with it well, especially post shave. But, the Vegan based version is not that shabby either. It’s actually quite good only a tic or two behind the Tallow based soaps in post shave. The only other soap that I’ve tried vegan wise that runs neck and neck with it and maybe even surpasses GD is Wickham 1912. But, overall I do consider Grooming Dept as an elite artisan soap producer, despite the business and shipping delay issues that have plagued this artisan for some time now. I do hope that Grooming Dept gets it together business wise. I wish for no failure for any artisan that produces a quality product...

True and Wickham I here is pretty good stuff. I have a sample of Union Square fro Josh to try with a stack of others. Yeah, I don't have ill wishes for anyone. In this day and age with sooo many artisans, people aren't going to give slack over nd over before they move on. Hope he can get it together or have someone help him on managing things.

Well, finally was able to order a couple of his soaps...got one that I was wanting, and the other sounded interesting....was really looking to snag a tub of Tao, but settled on the Magnolia Oud. The new Cypre scent sounded great...that probably sold out first.

Well, I had no interest in GD until I read that Elan is a juniper-forward scent. Let the shipping delay excuses begin!

Elan was the vegan base I got although the Juniper forward isn't what I'm focused on. Hoping the other scents come to play when lathering too.

Here is what I got.
Elan - Vegan Shaving Soap: Citrus, Juniper Berry, Cypress, Cardamom and Woody Accord.
Since the juniper berry is on the cover, it should be a dominant note, I hope. But it would be nice if it had dimension to it. It should pair awesomely with Captain's Choice North.

Chypre Conifère - Donkey Milk Vegetal Shaving Soap: Air, Citrus, Labdanum, Ambergris, Sweet Birch, Pine, Spruce, Pine Needle, Balsam Fir, Fir Needle, Woody Notes

You know what they say - De Nile...it isn’t just a river in Egypt!

Yeah, maybe. Chris sent me a sample. And it wasn’t as good as I remember. I just remember it being the best of the 5 samples I tried. Trying to figure out if it’s something I need. And timing isn’t great.

Sounds like a big month ahead for them. I’m not at all interested in the vegan version (the unique Tallow selection makes a great soap) but I’m curious what he’s come up,with. My guess is palm oil, palm kernel or some variation. Palm oil is a very close approximation of Tallow, often called “vegan Tallow”

What did you think of the duck fat ones?

That's a big list of things to come. I see 2 that draw my immediate attention.

Mandarin&Cardamom - Janus Tallow
Mallard Praline Cognac - Duck Fat

The man makes some outstanding soaps with some complex scents (complexing also?) that delivers in either Vegan or Tallow bases with the Lamb Tallow right in the middle of those two offering a bit lighter and not as dense as the duck fat lather while being lightly richer than the Vegan line. Great performance either way you go.

I'm waiting on the Citric Tallow soap that sold out rather quickly. It's been 2 weeks since I ordered it so, hopefully it will be on it's way to my humble abode soon...

I like the duck fat ones a lot. I am intrigued by his duck fat and tallow base, that one should ROCK.

I am finding that as I "mature" in this hobby I am most interested in finding soaps that offer unique lather. I also enjoy the complex scent creations but most soaps are too weakly scented for me so the scent becomes less relevant. Grooming Department has some unique and complex scents and most I have tried are either strong enough or complex enough to stand out.

Grooming Department fills a really unique place in the artisan soap world. Rather than offer just one or two bases, he offers several exotic bases. Even if you can resist buying soap based on scent descriptions you just HAVE to try the different exotic bases. He gets a bit of bad mouthing for not having soap in stock but I think his unique niche will keep people coming back.
