So far so good today. Nice weather on tap, 80's. Got to sleep in. Ran an errand for the wife. Now back home, in the middle of honing up my latest acquisition.
Done with the lower grit portion. The razor and edge were in very good nick. So not much work really. These C-mon razors are a very nice example of craftsmanship that is hard to find in present day. To get a modern razor that would come close to this razor. You would have to get in touch with the handful of guys that have the ability. Maybe get on a waiting list. Then pay a quite a bit more that what I bid this in for. Are they (modern) worth it. Yes. Why because you have to pay for the skill time and expertise required to make one. Or like @NurseDave pointed out. Get a Gold Dollar honed up nice and use it. For the price I paid. I could have gotten a dozen GD's. Or maybe one of the "customized" GD's like what @BarberDave has. Variety is more fun.
So I have just that variety. The humble GD up to my Korrat 14 2.0 and the gambit of plane jane vintage up to something like this C-mon which is one the fancier ones they made.
Lately I have been leaning toward the edges I get off my translucent Arkansas. So that's what the HF is going to get. The official soundtrack of today's honing session is The Who Quadrophenia.
Thanks @Dave in KY It is one that I was not expecting to get. As I was sure that it being soo purty. And my max bid not being even close to what I thought it would bring. I was quite "chuffed" to get the notification that I won it.
Ready for this evenings shave.
Thanks Tim. It's not often that a razor like it (C-Mon) pops up without the corresponding premium price attached.
The Hibbard Spencer & Bartlett Co. razor I have coming is from another "low" bid with the money left over from winning this one.
That company is the nexus for what became "True Value" hardware. But started in 1855. Bartlett an employee, became a partner in 1882. In 1962 is when they sold the hardware business to John Cotter. And True Value Hardware was born. Not sure what timeframe mine is from. Maybe someone has some more info than my Google-Fu can come up with. 1917 catalog. I got an “Our Very Best” model 1675. Back then $24/dozen.
That's a cool bit of history. I haven't been inside a True Value in almost two decades. They all died out back home. I'm sure there are a couple hidden around Houston. You're really inspiring me to keep hunting for more razors on the bay.
Hey Ben. Yea they (deals) are out there. Just have to be patient. Let me know if their are any particular types/brands/models that you are looking for. And if they pop up while I'm browsing i'll shoot you the link. Like I did for @BarberDave That Cactus razor popped up and I thought he would like it. Sometimes we get lucky. But with more eyeballs looking your chances increase.
Thanks, Fluffy. I definitely have a couple in mind, but I'm gonna hold off until after the PT job is more set in stone. I foresee a little spending on some of the more collectible things even with getting a good deal with a low bid. I'll shoot you a PM when the time comes.
Well folks. What can I say. The C-Mon did not disappoint.
I had one heck of a skippy time. I picked my best brush, soap and aftershave. To use with the first use of it. And "Man 'O' Manischewitz" .
It was glorious. I may just do a ground hog day shave tomorrow. Each item on it's own is nice. But the symphony they create when used together. Is supremely satisfying.
I am gonna give the setup an official name. "The VIP Shave."
I hope all of you had as good of a shave as I had today.
Fluffy
