The long nerve wracking wait is finally over. The Gold Dollar 66 arrived the other day. And I managed to summon up enough self control. And waited until this morning to open it up and give it the "hairy eyeball."
Many of you are probably tuning out already. The whole debate about these razors fill pages upon pages on other forums. Over the last few years I read a lot of them. Took away the good and bad. Saw humor in how many people seemed unable to deal with opinions that did not match their own. One need only to read reviews on Amazon for any one of the millions of items they sell. To see that some people will always find a way to get but hurt. And argue their point. Even if it's to "make sure" no one else make the mistake of buying the toaster oven they got and did not like.
Having never gotten one of these incredibly inexpensive pieces of shaving equipment. Curiosity mixed with boredom finally got to me. On 14 July I ordered one. $5.52 US
After unboxing it and doing that video. In short order I got out my hones and had at it. My initial thoughts are as follows.
1. The razor is half hollow or a little thinner. But is not "extra hollow".
2. The scales are sturdy. The blade is centered. And there is a molded post where a 3rd pin would be on a Solingen razor. Interesting.
3. It lays flat on the hones on both sides. No warping or problems with the grind.
4. The heel of the razor where the stabilizer is. Could be cleaned up with a dremel to make honing that area easier. No biggie.. The original bevel is around the 3-4K range in stria to my eye.
5. The steel is fairly hard and I used a fair amount of pressure and strokes to get the course stria out.
6. Start to finish took me 1 hour. To get what should be a good edge. Which is slightly longer than most of my American, German, Spanish or English razors have taken.
7. Time will tell if this razor holds an edge and is enjoyable to use.
So far I am satisfied with this purchase. Is the one I got typical? If so, I would say that QC is fair to good then. Is it going to be nicer than my vintage razors. Probably not. But even so many of those I paid a minimum of $20 and up for. Will it be equal? That is a good question. Stay tuned 😎

Nice score. Those razors definitely have a love/hate thing going on. I have shaved with one that had a Method edge from lapping film and diamond paste. It was wicked sharp, but very smooth.

Okay well the verdict is in. The Gold Dollar first run was...... OK. Surprisingly the edge I put on was not quite up to my standards. It was at a level that would put it in the "touch up" category.
Just a little tuggy and more clean up than usual. So there will be another quick trip across the hones. To address this short coming. Other than that. I would say the razor feels like using a heavier Stiz Russian razor. Not much audible feedback. Just a nice utilitarian razor that gets the job done without a whole lot of fuss. My other Chinese razor being a Double Arrow. Is superior to this one.
But they sell for much more. Will take her for another spin tomorrow after the touch up.
Hope you are all ready for the week.

Didn’t get to post up last night’s shave.
As suspected the dude that did the first hone job rushed it by a smidge. After a second effort his results were much better. Nice easy drama free shave. Not bad for a Monday. Playing with the idea of grinding off the tip and making it my preferred square/spike point style.322C02B6-4C49-4F1F-BEAC-53651A07BCB3.jpeg

Time to consider a new set of spaces maybe, if you’re gonna do work on it. Spice that plain Jane up!
