Shave Quality
A third good shave with the RR Blue Barbershop (a.k.a. What the Puck Blue Label). The first pass was skipping a bit so I added about a tablespoon of water to the lather. It went from thick and creamy to a thinner, slicker lather. It was the kind of lather that would be really good for a straight shave. Overall the shave quality was good. I have very little residual irritation and my face is quite smooth and soft.

Gear
  • No problems with the razor or the blade. I will keep palm stropping the blade and treating it with isopropyl alcohol after each shave. It will continue it get occasional honing as needed, either with one of my collection of DE hones, or with a glass.
  • The soap is interesting. What the Puck is a veggie soap made from primarily coconut oil and palm oil (or possibly palm-based Stearic Acid) with some shea butter and lanolin. It is hard and triple milled, so it is dry and feels like it hasn't been superfatted. This all adds up to a soap that needs to be loaded heavily (the IB site recommends 45-60 seconds of loading) and needs a ton of water to get the full benefit. This is one of those soaps that benefits from the same tactic that one would use to lather Williams Mug (i.e. put what feels like enough water into it, and then put in a bunch more). This soap can really handle a large amount of water and the shave is better for it.
  • The RR Blue Barbershop AS splash is very good, basic but good. There is nothing new or innovative here. Just the ingredients one would expect to find in a high quality alcohol-based aftershave.
  • Ah, that nuclear pink juice from 1989! Anyone who has read my posts on this forum over the years probably knows that I am a fan of floral forward, masculine perfumery (e.g. Tabac). There are also three fragrance notes that I love: violet leaf, sandalwood (who doesn't like this one?), and orange blossom. Joop! Homme has a bunch of orange blossom with heliotrope and lily of the valley. There is a ton of synthetic sweetness and spices, but it is the floral notes that will always keep me coming back to this regardless of the snarky remarks and jokes made about this fragrance. Yes, it is one of the most "beast mode" fragrances one can buy. Yes, one spray into the air can fill a room. Yes, I have to really think hard about how much to spray on and where to apply it. Still, it is a love not a like. When this 200ml bottle is gone I will buy another 200ml bottle. It is a classic that I will always have on hand. It doesn't really go with the RR Blue Barbershop, and in fact overpowers it. But, that is two really nice smells to make Monday better.

Other Thoughts
We watched Disney's Encanto last night... I want that 90 minutes of my life back. I am not saying it was horrendous. I will say that in comparison to some of the other movies in the Disney back catalog, Encanto (and this goes for Frozen as well) is far, far from great. It does (they do) even worse when compared to several of the Pixar movies. The Sword in the Stone, Moana, The Emperor's New Groove, Lilo and Stitch, The Incredibles, Mulan (animated version), Zootopia, Wall-E, Up, Monsters, Inc., Toy Story, Brave, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Aladin, and The Little Mermaid are all much better movies in my opinion than either Frozen or Encanto. The music was catchy, but the story was bad (again, this goes for both Frozen and Encanto).
A magical house and individual magical gifts as a thinly veiled metaphor for the roles people take in their family situations and the family disfunction and strife that comes with those roles/situations is not a story that I am interested in or find endearing.
There are more reasons than this why I did not like this movie (or Frozen), but I stop here because I could possibly write a novel length post on everything I think is bad about the messages these two movies are sending to children.

TL;DR: IMO, Encanto is a turd of a movie.

In the happier and more upbeat part of my brain...
My IB order shipped and I hope that it will get here quickly. Perhaps I will create a Cella thread when my 1kg block arrives.

I think Mr Miranda has done some good things…but maybe he was stretched a bit thin with that one 🤔

I wasn’t impressed by it either.

A fantastic Williams shave a day early...

I bloomed the puck overnight to make sure it would load easily. The Stirling Badger pulled a sizable amount of soap off of the puck. I added a ton of water, as one is supposed to with Williams. The results? Yup, it was a fantastic shave! I went all the way to BBS with almost no irritation afterwards. The Williams lather was very slick and left my face feeling clean and smooth.

Gear

  • All good with the razor. The Mergress XL is a well done mod on top of the Merkur Progress. I am glad that I decided to pick one up.
  • The blade is all good. I will keep palm stropping the blade and treating it with isopropyl alcohol after each shave. It will continue it get occasional honing as needed, either with one of my collection of DE hones, or with a glass.
  • Williams needs blooming. It needs a heavy load with the brush. It needs lots of water. Give it those things and you will get a great shave.
  • Is there anyone who doesn't like Aqua Velva?? I highly doubt it.
  • Blue Seduction is not high end. It doesn't last all that long. But, it smells great.

Other Thoughts
More snow. This time of year (the first three months of the year) are the coldest and snowiest months of the year. I still wish we had received some of this moisture in October or November.

I have some new things starting up and perhaps a some old things ending. We will see what happens... Change can be good.

Shave Quality
the Groundhog Day shave was a little more rough than day befote, but still quite good. I think I had the water ratio a bit off. I thought perhaps I need to use a deeper shave bowl with this soap, considering the water needs. With a little touch-up on my neck I was BBS all over and very pleased. There was some razor burn on my neck (mostly on my throat), but it was not hugely bad.

Today's shave was worse. I rushed the lather building so the lather wasn't quite up to snuff. I have quite a bit of residual irritation. I got close to BBS, but not quite there. Tomorrow will be better.

Gear
  • Razor is great.
  • Blade is holding up well. Palm stropping seems to work well. I am going to glass hone it again tonight or tomorrow.
  • Modern Williams is still modern Williams. I do love the citronella scent that the soap has.
  • The YSL aftershave balm is very thick and quite good. It was part of a Christmas present, but I might buy more when I run out. It smells exactly like YSL L'Homme.
  • YSL L'Homme is a modern classic. Ginger, citrus, and spices together make for an amazingly good fragrance. This was love at first sniff.
  • Cool Water AS is a decent alcohol based splash. It smells great, but doesn't feel like it has much skin food in it.
  • Cool Water EdT is a total classic and one that I am going to keep buying as long as they make it.

Other Thoughts
We got more snow yesterday and it was horribly cold. At around 9:30 last night we were in the single digits Fahrenheit. That sucked.

I am hoping that my IB order shows up soon... I want to get see just how big a kilogram of soap is.

A better shave on a still tender face

Shave Quality
Yesterday's shave has had lasting effects. My face was still a little tender this morning and I noticed a couple of pinprick nicks that I didn't see then. A word to the wise: take the time to build your lather correctly. Don't rush it.

Well I didn't rush it today. I also added more water and went through several rounds of whipping in my lather mug. It was a much better shave for it. I think I could still use a bit more water, however. I am not sure how much more, or how I am going to add it since the lather was starting to overflow the mug, but I will figure something out. Williams definitely needs hydration. I might set it for another overnight bloom, but that might be overkill. There are one or two stray whiskers on my neck, otherwise I would be completely BBS.

Gear

  • Razor is great.
  • Blade continues to work well with palm stropping.
  • More water for the Williams monster.
  • BHPC Blaze is a good fragrance. I believe it is a clone of Spicebomb. The AS feels nice on my face also.

Other Thoughts
TGIF, for sure. I am glad that this week is over. I hope everyone has a great weekend.

UPS finally updated the tracking for my IB order. Tuesday is the expected day. I have a bunch of empty tubs from CBL soaps that I plan to fill with Cella.

I had a nice, slow shave today that yielded good results. I had to turn the Mergress down for the second pass, however. Setting it to 4 was too much for my face today. Still, it was a great shave.

Gear
  • Razor is great, but can get aggressive fast at higher settings.
  • Blade continues to work well with palm stropping. I also used my vintage Dart DE hone on it today. We will see how it shaves tomorrow.
  • All good with the Williams today.
  • Bvlgari Aqva is one of the best aquatic fragrances on the market today. I love it.

Lapidus Pour Homme is a powerful, old-school fragrance, similar to YSL Kouros. I think it smells great, but it is not something that I would wear every day.

Shave Quality
The shave was good. While the lather came out really thin, it was very slick. My face is feeling good. The blade has lost some efficiency, so I didn't quite make it to BBS. I am going to have to hone it again. However, this did not stop me from getting a really great shave that was low in irritation.

Gear
  • The Mergress XL is awesome. I love Merkur razors to begin with. This one takes an already great razor and makes it so much better.
  • The blade is holding up well, but is losing efficiency. Another round of honing will be happening.
  • Williams is good even when it isn't the best it could be. The lather was thin and disappeared in places today. It was still slick and gave a great shave.
  • Speick AS is good stuff. I need to get another bottle of it soon.
  • If you like patchouli, you will like Zino Davidoff.

Other Thoughts
Trying to make good progress on a Tuesday.

My IB order arrived today. I think I need to pack the Cella into tubs tonight.

It doesn't seem like it should be possible, but it is. The Williams was really slick again today and the Treet Black skated right over it for just shy of BBS. I think that I am using too much water. I loaded a bit more product for the second pass and the lather was better than the first pass. It still wasn't stable, but it worked.

Gear

  • Mergress!!
  • I honed the Treet Black last night. Today it really performed. It was almost like a brand new blade.
  • Williams. Load up a ton then use a bunch of water. Make sure you load it like you hate it.
  • If you haven't tried Speick aftershave, you are missing out on some really good skin conditioning.
  • Bentley for Men Azure is aquatic with a tea note that comes off kinda swampy or perhaps like seaweed. It is not bad, but it is not the best of the Bentley fragrances. I still need to purchase a bottle of Bentley for Men Silverlake.

Going to go out and hang with my friends tonight. I need to build a second Vampire: Rivals deck, but I don't know what to build. My Thin Bloods deck is good, but I want to find something else to change it up a bit. I am not sure what clan to focus the deck build on.

Man, the Mergress is a sexy razor! Are they still made? I know they were all the rage 5-6 years ago, before all the other razor makers really got going. I cannot disagree with the williams, the more you use it, the more it gets hydrated and the better the shaves.

Have a great day!
