Volume 52 Derby Premium Use 1
On deck today is the Derby Premium blade. These blades come in a nice black box, and you can definitely tell it is Derby's attempt at a classier blade. Everyone has used a Derby Extra, and everyone seems to have the opinion that they are just okay. Well here is Derby's attempt to fix that.
These blades are made in Turkey. They are made from steel that is sourced in Sweden and they are a Chromium, Ceramic, Platinum, and Tungsten Polymer. Hmmmm where have heard that before? Well go back and watch the Parker blade review. They say they use steel from Sweden (do call out a specific steel) and have the same coating. The Parkers are also made in Turkey. So I was left wondering if the Parker is just a re-branded Derby Premium. It honestly wouldn't surprise me. So I went to Parker's website and saw that they would communicate via Facebook Messenger. So I sent a message. I asked a very simple question. Are there blades made by Derby? I also gave my reasoning for believing they might be. I also asked if so are they re-branded Derby Premium Blades? The response I got was that they won't disclose who is making their blades for them, I understand that. They then said that the blades are made in a 3rd party facility not owned by Parker, and that they are using a special steel and have to meet Parker's standards in order to be packed and shipped as a Parker blade. So with that being said and taking this at face value (see what I did there?) the Parker is NOT a re-branded Derby Premium. However This is
STRICTLY MY THEORY I think the Parker blades are made by Derby.
Alright well that is all out of the way so how did the Derby Premium shave? Really well actually. The blade is plenty sharp and I got an absolutely wonderful shave. The blade is plenty sharp and you know it is there, I walked away with a perfect BBS shave and 0 irritation. There must be something to this coating because it just agrees with me. If I had to compare it to the Parker after just one use I would say just slightly not as smooth. It will be interesting to see how this blade holds up. But so far everything seems very promising. It is also important to point out that upon reading reviews MANY MANY people have stated this is BIG improvement on the Derby Extra and I agree based off memory. But the Extra will be used soon in this series. So here is the pricing info:
Not on Maggards or WCS
Italian Barber $11.99 per 100 roughly .12 cents per blade

You can knock about $1 off the Amazon price if you check out eBay.
