3 days growth on the stubble to take care of this morning, and I went with the Valobra shave stick I'm keeping in the cabinet for the odd 3017 rogue shave. Using the same soap every day is great for dialing it in and being guaranteed good to great lathers day in and day out. It also has the added benefit of deleting soaps from the stockpile in a very consistent way. The time to use up a puck will vary, but you start it, and you always know that it will end.
The downside to using it every day is that for me, my nose just gets so used to the scent, it actually stops registering. Remember when you started this hobby and you'd sneak into the bathroom to get a sniff from the soaps and creams in the den, maybe even taking an aggressive whiff of the brush? Yeah, well the longer I have done this, the more my shaves have been about the routine than the experience. Paying attention to the scent is just one casualty of that.
I do notice the scents when I'm starting up with a new soap, or I change up the routine a bit. I think this is why I love shaving on the road, because I always through something different in the Dopp kit. The whole routine changes, and I truly appreciate the scents. Anyway, I truly appreciated the scent from the Valobra stick this morning. It had sat in its box and wrapper for about 5 years until I opened it a few weeks ago. I really noticed the fougere scent it has. It's squarely in the English Fern category, but is much lighter on the powdery front note. It's truly a treat.
