BarberDave's Shaveapalooza

Great read, picture, and shave Dave!
Glad to hear the shaving class was a success!

I like that you are selling a branded TI in store AND that customers have the option of getting an actual straight shave should they request one. I assume a customer can purchase a TI and have his barber shave him with it then take it home? Maybe you can arrange a special hone and shave package, get your razor honed and have the barber shave test it on YOUR face.

The Gem's are wonder razors no doubt. Fortunately there are plenty available on eBay at decent prices so anyone looking to get one can do so. Getting the blades can be difficult at brick and morter stores but it can be done (CVS seems to carry the carbon steel versions...good shaving razors but they rust easily)

I get my GEM blades in bulk from Ted Pella, Inc. (tedpella dot com). They are a scientific supply shop, but have decent prices if you don't mind buying in quantities of 100 or 200. It wouldn't be too hard to repackage them in 10's to resell.

Nice shave there mama duck.

Of course they loved the GEMs. They are awesome.

Catching up on your journal is always a joy, Dave! Your pics are consistently awesome, and I am really enjoying the progress you are making with the shop and the classes. I am going to have to get me some of those new soaps and splashes, too!

Thanks Guys, Crazy few days, the Radio Show is up, and we have become Chicken and Duck people ( we did not want Chris to get all the fun ) I have discovered a few thing about chickens and ducks and Chicken Coups more on that in my next entry, LOL

All I know is chicken is for every day, and you save the duck for special meals.

STARDATE: AD:20180430: NO SHAVE DAY ( Getting Ducks, chickens, Feed, Coup etc, etc )
Pre-Shave Lather / Hot Towel & Rince / 15 Laps TM linen / 50 laps TM Strop
Post-Shave: Lucky Tiger Aftershave Salve / Cold Towel &
Rinse
30-laps Trans-Ark Hone / 25 Higgins English Linen / 50 Westholme Fast Draw

No shave today as we entered the world of Foul Ranching....... Oh Boy!

I was awoken by the boss indicating that we were getting some chickens and ducks..... uh ok, how hard and expensive could this really be, little chicks and Duckling are cute and cuddly....... the adventure begins.

So ducklings are cheap, so cute, so that was easy... but now we had to have a certain about of protein content while they were young ( 1-week ). However you can only buy in 50lb bags. Ok we will use it. They did not have the Chicks Sharon wanted ( obviously she knew what she was talking about. Yet another Secret Agent skill I did not know she had)

We now also needed a pen, so a chicken coup was in order (unassembled of course) so there vaporized another $400.00 LOL. So we took them home and the adventures of Mama Duck began. One yellow ( to be a typical white duck ) and one Black Duck ( to be who knows ), both female and I was excited to reach the some day Nirvana of "Duck Eggs" as has been described to me by the Maji of eggs.

what I did not know was that Ducklings cannot regulate heat yet, so they had to be kept inside..... we have cats.... smart cats that can turn door handles... so my shave den was now a duck play area with a box, water, feed, oh an did I mention we had to have special feed and water containers.

So, boxed up, happy and squeaky they now awed at the shave items ( ok they really did not care, but it made me feel good ). Under a heat lamp, getting a tan they were happy. I did hold them for a bit to bond and was melted to a kid as they pecked at my mustache and fell asleep on my chests, after relieving themselves. They are messy WOW. On to building what would later be their home....

According to the box 400lbs worth, it would take one man 90-minutes to build....... Bolderpoopy!!!!. With both Sharon and I it took the rest of the day, into night and we still had not finished. HINT - Never do a DYI project with an engineer, that also happens to be your spouse........ After some fireworks it was time to stop our nocturnal building and check on our quackers. Holy poop..... they can poop, mess up water bowls, tip over feed bins, and still squeak happily. I now realized this was now payback for me refusing to do the cat litter boxes, oh so many time. PAYBACK!!!!

So after replacing a box, and told to keep the manure for the garden I was able to shower, relax and go online looking for chickens. I must state at this point I Like ducks much better. Like puppies with a un-ending poop agenda. Yes we have bonded.

So Craiglist turned up a local person who had Americauna chicks, 2 actually, bit older and supposedly to give off a blue- green egg of such richness kings had these... OK then. So yesterday we finished the coup, picked up yet more stuff, like bedding, scratch ( WTH ) and hardware cloth to reinforce and keep Cougars, bobcats, and apparently Dragons from getting the foul. Yes it is engineered to the hilt.

We drove to the far end of Tucson and picked up the chick, some fresh eggs ( I have never had any) and now Sharon, completely happy treated me to Some Jack in the Box Tacos......... All was well with the world.

So now I must say I like Ducks More!! as we integrated the two species, the chicken, which I suspect are actually Eagles, by both the color and attitude tried to beat up on the ducks..... Oh hell No! they we locked in the nesting area, up the stairs to the left of the chandellier and in the Master suite, and the ducks, a bit shaken wee given a trip back to the shave den, until we figured out next plan.

The chicks are a bit older, and were being bullies, so I am looking forward to the day the Ducks get big and beat their butts, LOL so for now we needed to make yet another pen.

So, now even the ducks have a spa complete with pool. Now they are really happy and a blast to play with and one of the ducks is actually a submarine so all is well with them.

The chickens on the other hand after re-thinking it are VelociRaptors, Attitudes from Hades and no even close to being freindly and 5 weeks old. I will over come. BTW Chickens is Stupid compared to ducks. Chickens are cleaner and ducks are slobs.

They are like The odd Couple Chickens are Felix.... Alouf and snobby, and Ducks are like Oscar... Slobs, but Fun loveable and a Dog with wings. The adventure continues...... LOL

STARDATE: AD:20180501: DE Shave
Pre-Shave Lather / Hot Towel & Rinse

Weber PH Classic
Nacet (2)
Omega Hi-Brush / synthetic
Omega Aquae Shave soap
Omega Aquae Aftershave Serum
Penhaligon’s Blasted Heath EdP

What with more chiducken projects for that day I was lucky to get any type of shave in. So I opted for a DE as I was a sharing the den with our new kids.

Like Rich’s Safety cats. The ducklings watched with intense interest the shave of the day. Okay that was a bit of an exaggeration as they really
did not care but squeaked happily as they destroyed their water and food. A shave and a comedy show. What a deal!

The Omega soap and it’s accompaniments all work with ease and the Weber is just about the perfect DE

3-passes today and DSBBS finished up with the Blasted Heath to keep up the complete aquatic day

set-up:

The t-rex’s posing as chickens are still a handful, but not quite as mean as they get to know us. The duck of course are great and have bonded with us very well, and watching them in the water is a blast

have a great day

Wonderful couple of write-ups Dave...my SIL got some chicks just a little while ago and has already had to re-cock on a new batch shortly afterward after some neighborhood dogs got into their coop.

Interesting on the ducks...I might have to plant the seed with the SIL, LOL.

yea yea good shave and everything. But with how old you are you have NEVER had fresh eggs before? My hell Dave have you even lived?

Interesting to see what you paired with the smell of fowl
LOL. Lysol of course

Great recount of your entry into the world of the fowl.

I agree ducks are more fun and they definitely bond with the human kind WAY better than chicks. Grown Chickens however are capable of loving thieir food providing humans. I have only had 2 or 3 chickens that enjoyed me enough to snuggle up or be held, most of them just want the food. Sadly the loving chickens are also the slowest when it comes to running from the dog. In my experience the ducks become less friendly as they age unless you really hang out with them, let them follow you around the yard while you work (watch your feet) and toss them the odd treat, and they will maintain their bond.

Your yellow duck is most likely a Pekin or Saxony (saxony babies have little bit more brown mixed into the yellow). The Pekin are pretty classic and proficient egg layers. Saxony are NOT white when they grow up, they are a mixed buff color or a version of mallard coloring. Saxony are more rare but TSC could have gotten some. The Pekin get pretty heavy so they wont fly away on you like a mallard might.

Your black/yellow duck is most likely a Mallard or Rouen breed but it is hard to say what it will look like when it matures. If it has the classic green head and high contrast body ...its a boy. The females are typically more mottled (to stay hidden in the grass while they sit on eggs) and lack the bright colors except for some blue on the wing tips. Some versions of the breed are buff colored, if that's what you have it will be harder to ID the Egg laying ability. Oddly enough there are runner breeds that have a longer and more upright (running) stance. These typically look like a mallard with a problem.
