An Unexpected Journey: A Newbie's Walk In Wet Shaving

Yup, I have that cane I made a while back. It's been great to use it. I have orders for canes just like it as soon as I can stand and forge again. I finally ordered my blacksmith touchmark to mark my work when it's hot so I'm ready to start making more things that can be sold. When I get going I'll definitely pay the money and become a hobbyist

That is nice!

Cpvc? Letting it cure I guess

No, he cracked the brass connector to the shower drain and since I live out in the sticks he didn't have time to go get one and come back. Everything is done now and I'd give his work a good solid B+, but some of the things he did really didn't make any sense and he made a few mistakes that aren't material in the end. He ripped out a piece of paneling in my basement (literally ripped it it out) after I gave him permission to remove it to get a better angle on things, and then he just left if open and took the piece of paneling he destroyed away. Then he put in an outside spigot and drilled a wrong hole which he patched up nice with a black rubber stopper piece, but what the heck? I had another piece of siding he could have replaced it with if he'd just come in and owned up to an honest mistake. Oh well, I'm just happy I didn't have to do the work because it was in a really crappy spot for all of it - dirty job crappy.

I understand and hate it when people don't do work as if it's their own home...........................or maybe they do. Glad it's done at least.

A couple nice shaves for Friday and Today. It's so weird. I had less time to be on TSC before my surgery than I do now and I spend less time on here now that I'm laid up. Of course now I have to move the PC out to a chair I can sit in that doesn't violate my angle restrictions so I guess it's just more of a pain and I hate to ask my wife to move the PC out in the living room. She'd do it 5 times a day if I asked, but she's already got a full plate.

Though both were pretty much identical shaves both days, I spent a little more time on clean-up today trying to put some effort into being smooth. Yesterday's shave was excellent since I didn't get a shave the day before and that BBS shave lasted well into the evening even doing minimal clean-up. Both days were BBS shaves. It really hit home that I'm on the right track with just doing 3 straight passes. I get really smooth with just 3 and with a little clean-up the BBS realm is achieved. All that clean-up I used to do within each pass was the root of almost all of my irritation and need to change blades after 3 uses.

On the personal side, I took my first steps without a cane or anything Friday. I walked from the bathroom into the kitchen. Today I walked even further. I limp pretty badly while doing it, but it proves that I'm not that far off from shedding the cane. I also went outside today and walked around on the flat areas of my property, walked down my driveway and went into my blacksmith shop just to look around and connect with my old friends that are my tools. The sun felt good on my skin and the fresh air was amazing. I'm now playing the pain reliever game of trying to stretch-out the amount of time in between the pain meds as I ween myself off them as I can tolerate it. I hate those little pills and the sooner I can get off them the better. I'm really ready for normal life to return, but it's not even been 2 weeks since the surgery so I just have to keep working and waiting for my body to heal on its pace not mine.

Good work on pushing yourself and realizing that the best course of action is not thru the pills. I'll send good thoughts your way.

Thanks! It's harder than I thought it would be. I'm going 8 hours in between pain meds and at half the dose they recommend. I can tolerate it.

Sounds like you really are on the right track and you will be at full strength sooner than you think! Some great shaves and some really great thoughts! And dude...I think I want one of those canes just to have one!

ZZ Top would have one 😁 I get a lot of compliments on the cane when out and about. I was hoping that would happen as it was my way of turning a situation where everyone would pity me or wonder what happened and turned it into a conversation about a cool cane. I find the hip part of the conversation is brief while the cane part is the focus. One guy I talked to said he could tell it was a really old cane by the brass tacks on it. When I told him it was a new cane that I made a few months ago he was really amazed. Though it may seem kind of selfish on my part, the cool cane helped me cope with having to use a cane.

This morning it was all about a quick 3 pass shave and just going for a straight shot down the fairway. I had at home PT coming and then had to head out to my 2 week appointment with my hip doc. My at home PT lady is quite the drill sergeant, but that's what I need to spur me on.

I did bowl lather because I woke up early and decided to just get up and get my shaving stuff ready. I put a new blade in and got a great 3 pass shave. I spent some time on clean-up so I could get BBS. A very nice shave that carried me through the day.

On the personal side of things, my 2 week appointment went well. I got to see x-rays they took of the device inside my hip and it looks textbook perfect. I'm doing well according to all and hope to walking without a cane in another week or so. The car ride is still not comfortable at all and 2 hours in the car today didn't make me feel all that great when I got home, but suck it up right!

Sounds like recovery is progressing well.

I have never needed a cane but I have on several occasions wanted a really nice one just to have it. There is even an old European martial art that utilizes them as weapons from when they were widely carried as status symbols

I would like a nice one as well with a cool metal head. But they are pretty tough to pull off without looking like a pompous twit unless you have a limp.

This morning's shave saw the return of mammoth painting. Up until today, I just wasn't in the mood for it, but today was different. I did my usual 3 pass shave with clean-up and got a good BBS shave everywhere. One thing I noted in my particular face growth / reduction is that each pass shaving off the beard with my DE roughly corresponds with feel-wise with how the beard grows. For instance, after one pass shaving my face feels like it does 14 hours after shaving or about 8 pm the day of the shave (SAS). After taking a second pass my face feels about how it would at noon on the day of the shave at about 8 hours post morning shave (CCS / DFS). A third pass gets me back to the place of beginning which is usually BBS. So for me, each shaving pass on average removes 8 hours of growth. This was a new way of thinking about the number of shaving passes that I thought was interesting. I'd like to see if others find the same sort of idea.

On the personal side, I switched out the high doses of Tylenol for Ibuprofen and it's made the largest difference. I haven't used my cane at all today and have been walking around the house with a slight limp. They green lighted me to try it yesterday and wow, I feel more like myself and am walking around 15 days after surgery. I'll still use the cane for long walking bouts, but I feel so much more like myself and think I will be able to ditch the pain meds.

Mammoth Painting sighting!

I’ve never quantified my shaves much by pass. I just know, simply put, that my first two passes (WTG and XTG) are only good enough to get me into CCS/DFS range. My last hybrid pass is the key to me feeling like I’ve accomplished a good shave, getting me back to BBS or BBS/DFS border. I’m usually never worse than SAS from a day’s growth.
