The Heysi Missive

Less than 60 days until my trip to Texas!!!!

I'm getting excited. Countdown clock has started and the last few details are finalized. Even found out that the Astro's game that I'm going to is a jersey give-away night....so that solves my "blend-in-with-the-enemy-crowd" issue. And it gives me a souvenir to hang up in my bar when I get home. Each ballpark I visit, I pick up some item to commemorate my trip. So two birds....one trash can (that's a reference to the cheating Astros).

Now I'm excited about the BBQ that they serve at the game. I'm a hot dog guy at most games.....but its Texas.....gotta go with the BBQ. And I found out that the ballpark has a beer garden from one of their local craft breweries........so you'll find me there enjoying the game and some brisket with my multi beers.....wearing my Cheaters Jersey.

Checked in online for our cruise!!!!!

I'm a big fan of the tech upgrades that cruise lines use. Online check in being one....the E-Muster is another. No more standing in a line on deck with a life vest around your neck while they call out some drunk fool's name that doesn't show up on time. Now you watch a video on the app and stop by the actual muster station you would use in an emergency and you're done. Time spent: 5 minutes.

The online check in process is so smooth. Scan your passport...all your vital info auto populates and after you put in your credit card info (which is already in my account) and take a quick headshot.....you're ready to board the morning of your cruise. From that point on.....they just scan your seapass card and take a scan of your face and you're on or off the ship in seconds. Lines of 15-20 minutes no longer exist with this easy tech upgrade.

But on the other hand........the app has a text message feature that sucks. Oh...it works as a message system but it doesn't have a way to notify you that you received a message. So its really just a mailbox you have to check all day long to utilize properly. How can IT guys get so much right...and so much wrong?

On the current planning for our trip....it occurred to me that I'll be at the Johnson Space Center a month after the completion of the Artemis II mission. There should still be plenty of excited employees around. I'm even more excited about the visit than before. If its not obvious....I love space stuff. And NASA in particular. Now I just hope that RISE, the Artemis plush toy is still available so I can get one for my Granddaughter.

Decided to try something this morning.

As you may have read in my most recent posts....I'm going on vacation soon. I have my toiletry bag out on the bathroom counter and I'm going through my bag to make sure I have all my necessary supplies. I checked out my toothpaste....made sure there was enough for the 10 day trip...same goes for shampoo, deodorant, and soap. Everything looks great. I turn to my travel shaving gear. Soap looks fine, aftershave is good, check my blades......hm....I've been using the same blade on vacations for about 2 years now. So this blade has less than 50 shaves on it. I just passed 250 shaves on my daily blade and its feeling like it needs to be replaced. Why not swap out the daily blade for the vacation blade to see how it will do for the daily use?

Oh my. Such a difference. I'm used to switching from a blade with more than 100+ shaves on it to a completely new blade and the resulting shock to the system...but this was not shocking at all. The "preused" blade was so nice and smooth. So effortless in its beard removal. I need to figure out how to duplicate this with other new blades. To be able to avoid that Hyper-sharp newness and just go straight to the comfortable daily whisker remover stage....that would be heavenly. Maybe there's a way to pre shave each blade before use?

Anyway......my gear is all sorted and I'm ready to go. Less than 20 days!!!

Looks like this is now available for pre-order on the NASA website

Ok.....so I tried one of the Gem Platinum Diamond Glide blades KJ sent as part of the Bingo prize package. I'm not sure I see the hype. I didn't find it as sharp as the Gillette Silver Blue fresh out of the wrapper. To me it felt like a GSB after about 10 shaves. Maybe I'm missing something.

I also tried the Nivea Deep. I definitely prefer the Nivea 2:1. The aloe in the 2:1 makes is so soothing. So again....I'm not seeing the payoff in the hype.

But to each his own. What I find the best may be the worst to someone else. And that's the beauty of this world.

But NEWS FLASH.....I tried something new. Actually two things.

Ok....so for the past 20-30 years I've been traveling with my minimal travel shave kit. A brush, a razor, a blade and a puck of soap. Over the years I've upgraded the razor to a dedicated travel razor (a black handle Gillette tto... birth year and quarter) and I've started using better soaps. Got a great synthetic brush a few years ago that dries in no time and I even got a smaller version of my hammered copper lather brush. Two years ago I added a travel sized bottle of aftershave and I now have a second bottle for aftershave tonic. But I've always used the same blade. And I've never changed how I carried it in my travel kit.

Yes... that's the beat up old box that I've been carrying my blade in for nearly 30 years. The blade gets replaced from time to time. But the box is a mess and I always have to take extra care to not slice open my finger when getting the blade out of the box.

Until now.

This is a 3D printed blade holder. I couldn't find a good one to print at work but I found one online and the price was reasonable. It comes in lots of colors but I picked Dodgers Blue because it looks fantastic.

And the blade stays safely inside with little chance of cutting myself during opening.

If anyone is interested...the Etsy creators name is Filamentworkx. I found it by just doing a search for razor blade holder. But the quality is great and I know that we all look for cool gear for our shave dens and travel kits. I'm not endorsing it (and I certainly didn't get it for free) but if anyone wanted to look it up...that's where I found it.
