The wonderful excesses of acquisition disorders...and wet shaving

Great video Josh. You have definitely just sold me on Declaration Grooming. I am curious if you have tried any of their other scents and what your thoughts on them were?

If they every come out with it again, and you can get your hands on it, Champs de Lavande. It's a collaboration with Chatillon Lux, who make the EdT and Aftershave. Another good one that I very much enjoy from them is Shore and Chaipre. Chaipre is a cross between a Chai smell and a Chypre (think bright citrus up top, complemented ususally with a peach undertone, and carried by oakmoss and musk; similar to fougere's, but much brighter up top). Shore is an aquatic...

Hello my name is not Josh. I adore Unconditional Surrender. I've debated picking up a new set with the new base, but I have two sets of the old. 4th & Pine, which is now 88 Chestnut I think? is a bitter green citrus scent that just does it for me too.

Unconditional Surrender is the one I was really looking at. My wallet is not happy with you right now...

No shave video, image, or story; just a bit of life updates. I'll first apologize to everyone for being largely absent from the community. Life comes at you fast, as you all know, and upon returning to the states full time back in 2020, it was no different for me. After 5 years of being away from family, it was a huge adjustment to being co-located with them once again. A lot of issues to work out with everyone in the house. Still working through those, TBH, and will be for some time. Following my time in active military operations overseas, (I lived in Kabul, Afghanistan for 5 years working for USSOCOM as a targeting anlayst for those who didn't know), I came back and took on the mantle of a training scenario developer for those who did my job, at Camp Bullis up in the north part of San Antonio. It was a good job, and I enjoyed it for the most part. There was not the huge endorphin rush of seeing immediate gratification of seeing a hard to reach target package get actioned in whichever way the command deemed appropriate, but it was good to give Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines some realistic environments to train in, preparing them for the time when they would need to use these skills in less than ideal scenarios.

But, like my time overseas, that too had to come to an end. Due to many (poor, very poor) decisions on my part, life circumstances and events, and other things, I was released from that job this past February, without any warning. One day I was working there, the next I new I was asked to leave. In retrospect, a combination of things led to my dismissal, though being an at will employee, no reason was needed to be given by my employer, and they didn't give one. A big reason, though, was I was burned out. 5 years overseas of working 12-20 hour days, 7 days a week, but being buoyed by those endorphin rushes of instant gratification, followed by a pretty drab office job working with big data, but no immediate payoff, nothing that really motivated me to improve.

So, for the past 9 months, I have been on the job hunt. At first, I tried diving right back into the Military Industrial Complex (MIC), continuing the career I had bult through my time in the military and as a contractor. But I couldn't get excited for any job prospect. I knew if I went back in to the MIC, that burnout I experienced in the preivous 2 positions would rear its ugly head again in short order. I needed to change. So, I took a step back and re-evaluated what I did enjoy from the previous two positions. After a while, I figured out that I enjoyed figuring out puzzles, such as a complex excel code/formula/macro. I enjoyed finding little nuggets of gold in big data that led to a breakthrough. That was the real reward for me. So a logical step was for me to pursue jobs in the Data Analysis field. I started trying to learn/teach myself SQL, Tableau, etc. I started small, and kept putting out resumes. After a VERY long 6 months of the apply, wait, get rejected cycle, I started landing job interviews. The first didn't go so well. However, just a couple of weeks ago, I landed a job with a smaller company based out of the UK, with a new office here in San Antonio. They're working with H.E.B., and it's a good fit. The pressure of being in the MIC, clearance maintenance, and everything else that goes into it was too much. It's nice being out in the civilian realm where I don't have to worry about those things and being treated like a person and not a commodity. Of course, now with the new job, I do have to start shaving semi-regularly again after not really doing so regularly for 5 years.

Though the go-to razor for the few shaves I have done over the past 5+ years has been either the C.V. Heljistrand Mk.31, or the Colonial General Brass with a Feather ProGuard blade. Most of my soaps, aftershaves, and razors are safely put away in storage (storage meaning buried in the back of a full and completely un-navigable garage) I did manage to keep out some favorites, however. A&E Signature, Stirling Campania, Tablot Governors Island and a few others have been the pick of the litter. I also have quite a few of my brushes out and available, though I invariably always go with the Declaration or Shavemac.

I'm grateful to be back, posting. It's going to start slow, but hopefully I'll be able to post a little more frequently as I get used to the new schedule. Happy Thursday, everyone!

Congrats on the new gig! I hope it turns into the rewarding experience you’re seeking in the long term!

I thank you for your service and at the same time am sorry at the tough time you’ve had re-entering the civilian ranks. I hope you have a good support network and find stability and contentment…you deserve it.

Thanks to you and John/Monkey I undertook finding one of these seldom seen beauties a number of years ago. I had mine coated in nickel but still one of my favorites.

It’s great to see you again! Congrats on finding what sounds like a pretty great job. I hope we get to hear from you more.

@Dagwoodz holy crap! Great to see you back! I really hope you enjoy your new gig and that it’s stimulating! I’ve been in burnout myself and it’s no good for you or them no matter whose fault it is!

Looking forward to do seeing you around, best wishes

Well, another shave in the books. I was chasing a little bit on this one, something I haven't done in a while. But, wanted something that was going to keep a little more than just a day or two thanks to slow growth and sparse beard hair on the cheeks.. So, before work yesterday, got the shave in. Brought along a couple of new additions to the den as well. Unfortunately no pictures, sorry.

I needed to get a fresh tub of hair pomade since wearing my customary faded/tattered truckers hat wouldnt' fly in an office setting. So, I ended up placing an order off of Maggards for some more Lockhart's Anti-Gravity. I haven't found a pomade that suits me as much as this. My previous tub had dried out, as there wasn't a necessity to use product when I seldom got haircuts, always wore hats, and didn't realy get out too much. But, needs must at this time. This product is, for me, the perfect blend of a medium/firm hold water based pomade, matte clay, fiber, and gel, but without the negatives. Great hold as long as you aren't in high humidity or sweating profusely, restylability throughout the day, matte finish, and amazing texture and volume. I'm not trying to look like a greaseball in the office, so the matte finish and firm, but flexible, hold is of paramount concern. I'm lucky enough to not be thinning, and am currently sporting a mid zero fade with about 2-3" on top, so, volume isn't really a worry. But the texture that this product provides is great. Next to no pulling on application, unlike true oil or water based medium/heavy hold pomades, and a little goes a very long way. I use about a pea size or less and have great results.

While I was shopping for this, I decided that it would be good to pick up some additional software. Along with some more SE blades, (Feather Pros), I wanted a soap/aftershave which I hadn't used before and it's been a solid 4 years since I've added anything to the stash. In that time period, there have been numerous new soap bases which have been developed. The one that intrigued me the most was B&M's new Omnibus base. I have a pretty good selection of B&M soaps stashed away in storage, so from a scent point of view, there was very little I hadn't tried. I vascilated between Le Grand Chypre (one of my favorites) and Fougere Angelique in the new base. I ended up going with Fougere Angelique mainly due to it's versatility in both cool and warm weather. (LGC can get a little cloying in very hot weather due to the peach EO's) Of course, I matched the soap up with the aftershave splash. Now, I have this soap/aftershave combo in one of the previous soap bases. So I'm very familiar with the scent profile. I was more interested in the soap base and how it would perform for me.

So, software being selected, on to the hardware. I decided to pair it with the Declaration 26mm 2-band. As usual, the implement of whisker removal was the C.V Heljestrand Mk*31. This hone has about 35 shaves on it, and it is showing zero sign of the edge breaking down. It's still as smooth as when I first honed it on my JNAT. I also broke out the brass General with a 4th shave Feather pro-guard blade. I'll likely swap it out for a Feather Pro on the next round of shaves.

I must say...after shaving almost exclusively with Stirling, A&E, and Talbot soaps over the previous few years in the random acts of shaving that I participated in, the lather this B&M soap base produced was very interesting. I read that it whipped up just like a yogurt. I've experienced this in other soap bases to a lesser degree. My experience is that if you have an actual yogurty consistency in your lather, it's still underhydrated and will not give you the slickness you require for your shave. This one...let's just say that it surprised me. I got to yogurt consistency pretty quickly after a 30-40 second load. It still wasn't as 'shiny' as I wanted however, so I started adding water. Lots of water. The volume I ended up creating was amazing. When I finally achieved the lustrous lather I was aiming for, the volume had exploded, filling up the bottom 3rd of my lather bowl (it's quite tall. One of the Timeless bowls) and providing enough lather for at least 5-6 shaves. And the consistency was still very yogurty. Not too airy in the least.

So...on to the actual shave. Three passes with the Mk*31, a 4th ATG with the General with some blade buffing clean up left me with the first BBS shave in over 5 years. It's a solid 24 hours post shave and I'm still at DFS+. The level of protection the lather provided was amazing. If I had to knock it for anything, it was possibly that the post shave residual was very good, but not superior. If I had added slightly less water, possibly that changes. I would imagine that I could probably have thrown even more water at the lather to make it even more slick during the shave...this soap has some serious water tolerance and an amazingly wide water band. If you prefer in shave slickness, keep throwing water at it. If you prefer post shave residual, less so. It's easy enough to whip up into a lather. I would imagine that face latherers would enjoy it just as much as bowl latherers. You don't have to load for very long to achieve enough lather for a multi-pass shave either. Essentially this is a soap that would be just as comfortable as someone's first soap, having no idea what they actually want in their lather as it would be for an advanced shaver who is very particular and looking for very specific properties in their lather. It's that customizable. To say I was/am impressed would very much be an understatement.

Finishing off with the alum bar, witch hazel, and the splash completed a great shave before I had to run out of the house and get the kids to school and myself to work.

Thanks for the welcome back everyone. You'll likely see one to two of these a week moving foward as I return to the land of those who require a shaving routine. Have a great week, and to all those veterans out there, Happy Veterans Day!

Hey hey hey! It's nice to have you back, so don't use up a year's worth of journal characters in one post! It also must be easier living somewhere you don't have ration water with a mister bottle with lathering your soap. ;)

Thanks for reminding me about that, btw. It's been so long that I had completely forgotten I used the spritzer bottle to hydrate my lather. Now I need to find another spritzer bottle for my shaves.pleasantly surprised.jpg

I probably need to replace my sponges as well since they have hair sticking up all through them. lol. Dave doing the lord's work in enabling acquisition. Nothing has changed here...hahahahaah.

Hey, @NurseDave even enable ME, a wannabe minimalist who prides himself on his, ummm, frugality. His recommendation for Nivea 2 in 1 aftershave splash is spot on (even though it must be ordered from Europe). 👍

Nothing much new to report here. Getting back into the daily work grind. There was a shave that occurred on Saturday. Everything was the same except for the brush (swapped out the Declaration for a Wolf Whiskers Blackwolf), and the blade in the General. The pro guard was swapped out for the Feather AC Pro. Three passes with the Mk*31 with the ATG duties given to the General. There was a bit of blade buffing on the neck area which left it a little raw, evidenced by the nice little bite of the alum during post shave. But, I was DFS until this morning. I might have to work in another shave tomorrow morning which will likely be a WFH day, along with Friday.

The wonderful thing about artisan aftershaves is they double as a men's fragrance. B&M's Fougere Angelique is a nice floral/citrus top with some earthier tones underneath, perfect for the weather we're currently experiencing in San Antonio. The next 5-6 days they are calling for rain, so the B&M Fougere Angelique splash is going to get swapped out for Wolly Kaw's King of Oud. I'll likely switch out the soap as well, though that will be a gametime decision.

If you’ve never experienced a quality oud fragrance and you enjoy smooth, dark, resinous scents, put this one on your list. WK built the entire profile around oud; it’s present from top to bottom, but it’s lifted by bergamot and lemon up front, then transitions into sage, rose, and pink pepper. The base brings creamy rosewood and sandalwood with just enough vetiver and patchouli to add depth without stealing the show. I usually hate heavy patchouli or vetiver, but here they’re perfectly restrained and balance the richness. Again, with the oud as the dominating scent across all phases, it's a wonderful cooler/cold weather scent. WK did release this as a EdT, which is something I need to look at, but as an aftershave it acts like your typical $60 designer cologne. 6/10 projection, 7.5/10 longevity, 6/10 silage...safe for office wear as it won't blow out your cubicle neighbors, but you do get a nice bit of time sitting in your oudiness.

For comparisons, the oud EdP I used to wear was Bond No.9's New York Oud. While both are similar oud scents, NYO lasts up to 12 hours (9/10 longevity), will project a good 6-10 feet (8/10 projection), and leaves a pretty noticeable trail when walking (8/10 silage). NYO is a bit sweeter up top (due to the addition of plum and honey notes) and has some smokey vibes about it, making it a great cool weather evening (not for the office!!) scent. It will definitely get cloying in warm/hot weather, so summer wear is not recommended.

Hope everyone has a good Tuesday. It's hard to believe it's already November. This year has flown by and will definitely be remembered by me. Lots of highs and lows...

Thanks for reading!

And so it goes, another shave in the books. As I alluded to in my previous post, it was time to change up the scent profile to something a bit more dark and cooler weather appropriate. I would say cold, but when the high is still reaching into the 80's, it wouldn't be accurate. So the software today consisted of the only darker scent I could find in A&E/The Club Signature.

It's a pretty refined smell that's hard to really describe. But I'll do my best. Picture a dark bourbon sitting in front of you while you're in a cigar lounge that is filled with pipe tobacco smokers. There is a bit of sweetness to it, but it's attributed to the tobacco and bourbon notes. The wood from the furniture and wood paneling comes in and hits you as well, with a little bit of leather to accompany. It's not overpowering at all. Peter Charkhalis did a very nice job balancing this scent. The soap performance is excellent, though I have to admit it's a little bit of a dip from the Omnibus soap base B&M developed. (I don't see very many soaps keeping up with that to be perfectly honest). It was whipped up with my Jade Paladin Bulb, which was a surprise find in the closet this morning. No time for the straight razor today, so the Brass General was given his marching orders for a 4-pass and clean up shave. True to form, he did his job and did it very well, leaving me with a nice BBS all around, with next to no feedback from the alum aside from a little tingling on the neck. I finished off with peach Thayers WH, and topped off with King of Oud aftershave splash by Wholly Kaw.

I might need to invest in another tub of WK King of Oud for a darker profile shave soap scent. They're out of the Siero Donkey Milk base currently, with only the vegan option available. I'll have to wait until they restock the tallow base to make that purchase.

Only one more workday until the weekend, and it's Thanksgiving next week. The temporal gods really have a sense of humor...normally I would say that time flies when you're having fun, and it does...but it tends to speed up the older you get. To all the greybeards and those long in the tooth, does this sensation continue as you continue to "gain life experience"? Just curious. Have a wonderful day everyone!
