Which Adjustable Should I Get?

On second thought, I have to change my answer. Put the Fatboy on display if it's an heirloom and buy a Progress or Variant to use.

But I still say the Rockwell is a razor set, not an adjustable. I don't care what they call it.

Agreed on they difference between adjustiables and sets with different plates.

Ok. What if I change my statement to “Which multi-setting razor should I buy?” Does that help any? Lol. Also, the Cambridge dictionary lists the following as the definition of adjustable: Able to be changed to suit particular needs.
I think Rockwell qualifies lol.

So far I’ve gotten a lot of votes, but not many reasons why you’ve suggested your picks. Dave (of the KY clan) has previously told me why he likes the Rockwell so much. I’m leaning towards the 6C at the moment.

Though I said Fatboy resto, If you want a modern “multi-setting” (?) razor, I think you would appreciate the Rockwell the most as well for the wider range of smoothness of shave, similar to the mindlessness of the Teck II. The Progress and Variant would be good if you’re ready to step outside that comfort zone and explore a bit.

I'll set aside the argument which really doesn't matter as far as adjustable or not. All will do what you are looking for. He wants a razor to adjust and find a shave he can have a consistently good shave with. Any razor recommended can do that, but I've seen/read your journal and know you are frustrated with trying to find a good comfortable shave consistently. Having an easily adjustable razor will encourage you to constantly try a different setting in the search. Like I think John The Monkey said, once he finds a setting that works he leaves it. No more need for adjusting settings or swapping plates once you find what works for you. As difficult as it has been for you, I think the Rockwell will save you time getting you there as it is THE most intuitive razor I've ever used. It will get you at the correct angle and comfortable shaves that get you close and then you'd be in a position to adapt to other razors if you prefer. If I had my 6c still as a spare I would have already sent to you to try. Tried to get on off another BST actually for you to try but it was gone. I honestly think it is "THE" razor you need right now but you have the decision to make. If it would help you I will send my 6s for you to try and make decision.

I picked up a "River Lake" adjustable on Amazon for $12.00 that is a copy of the Mekur "Futur". It is made in China, but it is very well made and delivers a very good shave. It operates like a vintage Gillette adjustable. It is heavy and comes with a leather case. The blades that come with it are trash (Dorco) but the razor is a steal for $12.00 and I am very happy with it.

Alright Dave. You sold me! But you are right, a mindless shave is kind of what I’m looking for. And then once I’m ready to step it up I can change plates and start to step out of that comfort zone. It looks like the 6C can be had for under $50 on the bay, like you said. But if you know of any BST sites where I could find a better deal let me know lol!

Chris, maybe a Parker Variant is something for a little later down the line. Either that or the Fatboy resto. I really need to contact somebody about my options with that.

I've not tried my 6C yet, but it shouldn't be too much different from the 6S, and is a solid choice. And the C is a great value!

While I would say I love the Rockwell so you should get it. I would also say it's just as adjustable has having two different razors of different aggressiveness you switch between.

Except when you have 2 different razors, there are many variables that can change. Blade gap, blade angle, curvature, etc. In the rockwell, it's a steady progression that alters constantly form one blade to the next.

Quit arguing my logic with logic ok?

I was going to sit out of this discussion but I can’t hold it in anymore. I own or have owned, or have tested out and can personally say from my opinion how I like a lot of modern adjustable razors and a few vintage ones.

I have tested but don’t own
Rockwell 6s
Karve razor

Moderns I own
Rockwell 6c
Rockwell Model T
Parker Variant

Moderns I have owned
Q-shave Futur clone

Vintage I own
Delta Echo redone Gillette Fatboy
Gillette Black Beauty
Schick Injector type M

Ok now with that out of the way my favorite vintage one by far is the Fatboy.

The modern ones well we can argue easily which is the best but I can attest to the fact that the Qshave is a good razor for the money but they have a limited amount of shaves in them before alignment issues start to come about and I didn’t realize that before recent events. The Variant is an excellent razor with a ton of blade feel and is fairly aggressive as it doesn’t have a lot of blade support. The Rockwell 6s and 6c are almost identical in every way but in my opinion the 6c each plate is about one plate more aggressive than the 6s (the 4 plate for example on the 6c imo is the equal of the 5 plate on the 6s). The model T is super super nice and I just got really lucky and had the opportunity to get one. I haven’t had it long enough to give a full review of it yet but my initial impression is it takes the beast features of a bunch of different razors and puts them together to make one heck of a good shaver. I really hope this helps a bit and I will be glad to get more in detail about each of you want specific info.

Edit I forgot the Karve.

The Karve is a lot like the Rockwell razors in that it has multiple plates but I can honestly tell you that for the money the two Rockwell 6 series razors are a better value for an equal shave in my opinion

I guess I got an adjustable wrench for Father's day

I haven't used the Rockwell but I have only heard good things. A set is a great way to find just the right plate. I used a Karve set and enjoyed it.
Steve I think you have made a good choice.

I agree with Dave’s statement. Once you have a setting you will tend to leave it there.

I have only used the Merkur Progress, the Mergress and the Karve.

All of of them are excellent.
The Karve I love because it is intuitive and when the patina settles in it is gourgous (in my opinion)

Love the weight and finish on the Mergress. I was luck to get an XL on a BST and probably my easiest razor to use. I got mine for $75. I use it on 3-4 usually 3.5. Depends on how many days growth I have.

The progress is similar to Mergress just without the weight and not as polished and mechanics not smoothed out.

I cant speak to others. But I am sure you can’t go wrong with your other options out there. Heard great things about the Rockwell, Parker Varient, and Rex. You can even consider a Timeless and Game Changer to be sets considering they have different head options. Steve the world is your oyster. Another fitty cents opion from Sharps that you may not have been asking for.

Just a point to make. I picked the Rockwell not saying it's better then any of the others but given the price point he picked and seeing Steve's journal I honestly think it's the perfect fit for him at least at this point of his journey.

I agree that it is probably the best fit for him and honestly everyone in this wet shaving world would benefit from one of them if they are in that market. It is a great razor for sure any of them are
