Today's shave:

Razor: Yates Precision Manufacturing Build Your Own
Blade: Wizamet Super Iridium
Brush: Simpson A1 Astor Best Badger
Pre-Shave: Proraso Red
Lather: Zingari Man The Merchant
Aftershave: Zingari Man The Merchant Aftershave Balm
Additional Care:
Humphreys Maravilla
Osma Tradition Alum Block

This may be the last razor I buy. It was pretty much a vanity buy, to get a monogrammed DE. It shaves just fine. I got a BBS, with almost as much blade feel as the Ti Blackbird.

The Merchant is a sugary sweet smelling soap, that makes an annoyingly tan lather. It sure does the job as a shave soap. This is the only Zingari Man Aftershave balm I own. It's not really my bag.

Today's Shave

Razor: Blackland Titanium Blackbird
Blade: Gillette Nacet Stainless
Brush: Simpson Chubby 3 Manchurian (Faux Sapphire)
Lather: Mammoth Soaps/ House of Mammoth Embrace
Aftershave: Reuzel After Shave
Additional Care:
Humphreys Maravilla
Osma Tradition Alum Block

I guess I have a favorite razor, but I really enjoy the differences. I wouldn't want to shave with the Blackbird every day, but it's a lot of fun to take out for a spin. I sort of think of it as a kind of Red Barchetta, like in the Rush song.

Lather: Zingari Man Rogue
Aftershave: Shulton Old Spice Aftershave
Additional Care:

A lot of my activities as a wetshaver, from the beginning, was motivated by the "I must see for myself" ethic. Arko smells like a urinal cake? I must see for myself. Lilac Vegetal? I must see for myself. Looking back, that's a motivator a lot of times. One big one that always intrigued me was the Shulton vs. P&G vs. Indian Old Spice (vs. Family Dollar Spice for a few years). Old Spice was what my Father wore, so my sense memory of the Shulton is very strong - I should say, *seems* very strong. I do t put much trust in 40 year old scent memories, at least not mine.

Well, I grabbed some Indian Old Spice years ago from West Coast Shaving, and it smelled like Old Spice to me. Only recently did I finally seek out a NOS bottle of Shulton, and I got a bottle of P&G, which I had never actually smelled. Fwiw, here is my opinion on the Old Spice question.

Shulton Old Spice and P&G Old Spice are different enough that it is reasonable to consider them similar but different. P&G is lighter, and I get a sense of citrus. Shulton Old Spice and Indian Old Spice are similar enough that I cannot tell them apart.

As for which I prefer, I prefer Shulton/Indian Old Spice, so if I knew this going in, the obvious choice for me would be the Indian Old Spice. Same scent, much cheaper. Of course, now I have all three, which is why I've decided to move past the "I've got to see for myself" era.

The Diamondback is my kindest razor, and is a good follow up to the thrill ride that is the Blackbird.

I love looking at SOTD pictures. Some people really have a talent for composing them. I do not. Look at my picture. I carefully laid everything out on my towel, took the picture only to see later that I managed to place everything slanted by about 5°. smh.

Today's shave, May 6th, 2023

Razor: Karve Christopher Bradley Stainless Steel D Plate, 4" Argyle Handle
Blade: Gillette Nacet Stainless
Brush: Shavemac Silvertip D01
Lather: Wholly Kaw Timmermann Red Label 1869
Aftershave: Derby City Chop Shop Winter Reserve Small Batch Shave Tonic
Additional Care:
Quinn's Pink Grapefruit and Orange Rind Witch Hazel Toner
Osma Tradition Alum Block

Today's "theme" is, Old Timey Fonts.

Timmermann. I like it. It's my favorite of the 4 Wholly Kaw varieties I've tried. The marketing gimmick is classic. Bigelow, Kiehl's - they trade on an image of life lived pharmaceutical reliability. With Timmermann, somebody bought the name to an old company. Old formulas were discovered. But the only connection to the old formulas in these new soaps is the name, and the year 1869. That's okay, it's fun to play the game!

I may have gone crazy with soap buying, and pretty deep into modern DE razors, but my participation in the brush side of the hobby has been pretty well restricted according to my long term ideas of what I wanted. I can't tell the difference in 2mm of loft. I like scritch, and I like soft synths. I'm the opposite of picky. So I never felt the need to discover my "perfect" brush. I always liked the look of Simpson brushes, and the PAA synths leave nothing to be desired, in my view, so I pretty much stuck to those. I have a Shavemac, which I used today, and I have an Omega Evo, but that's pretty much it. I'm keeping them all, but if I do get another brush, it'll be another Simpson. I just got a Beaufort B5, so it'll be awhile before I think about the next one.

This was a very enjoyable shave. Every part was a pleasure.

Today's shave, April 7, 2023

Razor: Edwin Jagger 3ONE6
Blade: Derby Extra Super Stainless
Brush: Simpson Chubby 2 Super Badger
Pre-Shave: Phoenix Artisan Accoutrements Cube (Mentholated)
Lather: Floris No. 89
Aftershave: Floris No. 89
Additional Care:
Humphreys Maravilla
Osma Tradition Alum Block
Nivea After-Shave Balm

This is my "Coronation Shave," executed a day late due to what I'll henceforth call "The Gallatin Flu," as it is apparently transmitting its way around my town. It's a fun shave to ponder casually. What do I have that would be appropriate? Albion, by Phoenix and Beau, has a Windsor right on the lid, but unfortunately this Windsor is, in the words of John Cleese, "bleeding demised " TOBS calls themselves the Court Hairdressers, but that likely means they paid a licensing fee. But this isn't just a use-british-stuff shave, it's the Coronation I intended to watch for decades, but was too feverish and nauseous to watch. So doggone it, I'm going with my favorite British stuff. Floris #89, 3ONE6, and the Chubby 2.

Good luck Charles. You're going to need it. The world is going to start asking for their treasures back, more and more.

I took a couple of days off after some "too soon" shaving, to let things rest and grow.

Today's shave:

Razor: Karve Overlander Stainless Steel
Blade: Gillette Nacet Stainless
Brush: Stirling Synthetic
Lather: Mammoth Soaps/House of Mammoth Tobacconist
Aftershave: Pinaud Clubman Reserve Whiskey Woods
Additional Care:
Quinn's Pink Grapefruit and Orange Rind Witch Hazel Toner
Osma Tradition Alum Block

I loved everything about this shave. The Overlander is, to me, the razor built for Aristotle's Ethical Man. It is a pinnacle of carefully designed moderation. Every aspect of it's performance that I consider, weight, balance point location, width of effective cutting angle, the level of comfort as it goes over and around my chin and jawline (blades can grab me easily here. each pass, at this point, is more treacherous than atg on my upper lip). The razor just sits right in the zone for these properties that makes it a pure pleasure to use.

I've got several soaps that advertise some aspect of tobacco as a scent note. Rather than try and categorize and compare them, I'll just say that House of Mammoth Tobacconist is my favorite shaving product that is somehow related to the word, "tobacco."

The Stirling brush just works really well, like all their stuff.

And Whiskey Woods is my favorite Pinaud "Liquor Scent."

This was a privilege to be able to enjoy everything so much. Wetshaving is a blessing.

I've now been meditating daily for 3 months. It's something I've tried periodically in different forms over the years.

There's a term, a psychological term - I don't know if it's fringe or establishment, but I like the definition on Wikipedia of "Flow:"

***
Flow - the mental state in which a person performing some activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and enjoyment in the process of the activity. In essence, flow is characterized by the complete absorption in what one does, and a resulting transformation in one's sense of time. Flow is the melting together of action and consciousness; the state of finding a balance between a skill and how challenging that task is. It requires a high level of concentration; however, it should be effortless.
***

I have experienced this playing music live, doing needlepoint, and shaving. I want more of those shaves. It may not be termed the same, but I think the practice of meditation might help develop focus skills towards this goal.

I can't strive. Striving prevents it. I have to just practice, practice, practice. But it's funny to me that after dabbling in meditation in brief encounters over the years, what's really gotten me doing it every day is wanting the best of shaves.
