SOTD THURSDAY MORNING, AUGUST 13, 2020

Excellent shave today! VBBS above the jawline with a DFS below. My son presented me with a 1000 grit Chosera stone for bevel setting, which he assured me I probably wouldn’t need and a 320 grit diamond plate along with something called a jasper stone for finishing. He could probably open a sharpening supplies store given the jnats and coticules in his forge/workshop. My honing lessons begin when the two vintage straight razors arrive. It was inevitable! (Sigh!) He says I can use the jasper stone to touch up my current straights.

The Karve, a superb safety razor I should use more, made short work of the neck stubble, and sheared the dome stubble away with one good ATG pass followed by some selective buffing. I've found myself reaching for this Rooney brush every morning. It’s nowhere near the quality of their well-known Silvertip brushes, but it possesses a certain scritchy quality combined with a softness and backbone that just feels great on my shave surfaces. I’m really enjoying using it. This morning’s shave left me cool, clean and velveteen, just the way I like! I hope everyone has a great day!

RAZOR: Dovo Special (Mug), Karve E_OC Plate (Dome)

SOTD FRIDAY MORNING, AUGUST 14, 2020
My shave today required the use of two safety razors to complete my head shave. I first used a pass around Slant razor by Tom White, the Torqued Razor, but did experience an issue on the back of my head. The neck cleanup was a breeze, but I couldn’t seem to shave close enough on the back of my head in the troughs and valleys. After nicking myself twice with the Torqued razor loaded with a Suneko blade, I finished the back with my Shake Sharp. Good shave, but tomorrow I’ll try the Torqued razor with a Feather blade. Despite these mishaps, I feel cool, clean and velveteen!

RAZOR: Feather SS ( Mug), Tom’s Torqued Razor and Shake Sharp 1.5 (Dome)
BLADE: Feather Super AC (Mug), Suneko DE (Dome)
PREP: Cold water rinse followed by a scrub with the Rabid Banana Preshave Cube
BRUSH: Rooney Ebony Pure Badger
SOAP: Mitchell’s Wool Fat w/ 6 drops of M-Bomb
POSTSHAVE: Cold water wash with brush squeezings followed by Humphreys Lilac WH and Osage Rub. Finished with Krampert’s Frostbite AS Splash.

My shave today was identical to yesterday’s with two equipment changes. I swapped out the Feather Proguard AC for a Feather Super AC in the Kai Kamisori Clone. And secondly I changed the handle back to the original aluminum one. With the Feather Super loaded, I was able to achieve a bloodless face and neck VBBS with no need for safety razor cleanup. Tom’s Torqued razor (TTR) delivered the same level of shave to my head, albeit with two tiny nicks on the back of my dome. Proraso Styptic Gel easily took care of things leaving me feeling clean, velveteen and cool!

SOTD MONDAY MORNING, AUGUST 17, 2020

Today will be an auspicious day! My new Tradere arrives along with a freshly cut jasper hone. But the best part of my day was my head shave! A good Japanese friend, Toshi, who I used to work with, and is also actively involved in our hobby, sent me a magazine of Schick Twinjector blades when he heard I owned a Supply V2 SS razor. He recommended my trying it for a head shave. Now these blades are much thicker than regular injector blades and were designed with their own blade holder in mind. They can be problematic to load into the traditional models preceding the Type L. He claimed they wouldn’t work with the Hydromagic, but I was able to load a blade in mine with the key.

A head shaver himself, he recommended using the 3 Dot plate on the Supply and manually loading a twinjector blade. I did as he suggested, but did notice that the attachment screw wouldn’t Tighten all the way. In any case, the head shave was every bit as good as my AC razor shaves loaded with a Feather Super. He claims he’s gotten up to 40 shaves on one of these blades. All I know is that the VBBS on my head feels great! Every bit the equivalent of an AC razor shave. There was no difference in feel at all that I could pinpoint.

Ben was over quite early today and honed my Lord straight razor with his barber hone sized jasper stone and water to a gleaming cutting edge. What I found curious was his killing the edge on the face of the stone before beginning. He explained that it removed accumulated chaff from the honing process. Regardless, the shave with the touched up razor was different than I have experienced before. I felt like I was just brushing the lather away. The resulting face shave was the best I’ve experienced with a straight razor. VBBS above the jawline, and just about a VBBS- below that I easily cleaned up With the Twinjector loaded Supply razor. Unbelievably close! I feel cool, very clean and exquisitely velveteen!

RAZOR: Lord 6/8 (Mug), SS Supply V2 (Dome)
BLADE: Schick InjectorII (Dome)
PREP: Cold water rinse followed by a scrub with Rabid Banana Preshave Cube
BRUSH: Omega Pro48 Boar
SOAP: Mitchell’s Wool Fat w/ 6 drops of M-Bomb
POSTSHAVE: Cold water wash with brush squeezings followed by Humphreys Lilac WH and Osage Rub. Finished with Cremo Cooling Post Shave Balm.

SOTD TUESDAY MORNING, AUGUST 18, 2020

Today my shave featured two new shaving tools. One was a new/old Tanifuji Airi Shaving Sword (hey, that’s how it was marketed) and the other my brand new Tradere. I’d been reading about Japanese straights and Silver Steel when Ben called my attention to this straight razor available from a friend of his in NYC who’s apparently also a vintage Japanese straight razor nut. 95% of Ben’s vintage Straights are Japanese. He sold most of his Sheffield and Solingen straights. Only has a few collectibles in those categories. The razor arrived yesterday, passed the tilt ‘n wobble test with flying colors, and was touched up by Ben on his 20k jnat. Well fellers, I now understand what you mean by buttery, velvet edge! This was without doubt the best straight shave I’ve ever had, albeit with the same DFS below the jawline!

Enter the Tradere! At 118.5 grams it feels great in the hand. Shane of Blackland was 100% faithful to the original design, and I understand now why its entry eight years ago rocked the wet shaving community! It’s simply an incredible shaver. Loaded with a Feather blade, it cleaned up my neck Shearing away the stubble right down to the skin line while gliding along on its mentholated MWF lather cushion. There was little, if any, blade feel, but boy did it do the job. One and a half passes (ATG, ATG) on the noggin tucked the baby in and put him right to bed! It’s a combination of the weight coupled with the almost complete lack of auditory feedback. I was contacted by Wolfman regarding my order, but after this shave have no interest in pursuing it. This is without doubt one of, if not, the best modern artisan safety razors in my den! I feel cool, refreshed, clean and supremely velveteen!

SOTD THURSDAY MORNING, AUGUST 20, 2020

it’s a bright, sunny morning here in the Philadelphia suburbs. No better time for a stellar shave! For some reason, I just can’t bring myself to shave with any of my safety razors more than twice in a row! I really like the new Tradere, but this morning my SS Supply called out to me. And boy am I glad I listened. I loaded my Supply razor with Schick twinjector blades on the three dot plate, and really luxuriated in the dome shave it delivered. For a change this morning, I did the noggin first. The Supply glided right through that slick MWF lather shearing away the 24 hrs of stubble effortlessly. The result was the desired state of velveteen splendor (VBBS). Although I expected to use it again to clean up my neck, there Was no need.

Last night I grabbed the favorite of my two Damascus CKBA Koa Wood scaled straight razors, the one with the half hollow 7/8 blade. I built a nice slurry on the jasper stone with the 320 grit DMT plate, and after three slurry sessions hairs were a poppin’. I flipped the stone over, removed the chaff from the edge and finished on the fine side with two water sessions until the edge was polished and gleaming. The mug shave this morning (WTG, ATG, XTG) was amazing, my first VBBS both above and below the jawline. It was as good as any of my AC safety razor shaves with a Feather Super. I feel cool, clean and velveteen smooth. The straight razor shave has me in a very good mood! I wish all my shave brothers and sisters out there a great day! Mine has certainly started out that way!
