Gillette Fatboy Restoration

Yes exactly. SAs are aluminum, and that corrodes easily. I sent one to him a few years back that was completely seized. He had to steal parts from another one he had to fix it.

I would not assume this means Fatboys as they are completely different and easier to work on.

Super Adjustables are a model unto themselves. They have a lot of aluminum parts and may be more vulnerable to corrosion. I would imagine that may be why the Captain dislikes them. But I have never talked to him though.

As far as I know Capt still does the Fatboy.

Well, that's reassuring, but I contacted Back Roads Gold via Etsy email last night. They immediately responded, and I'll be sending them my FB tomorrow. It's already been replated, but needs some attention to its mechanics. I've heard nothing but praise for Cap's work for years, but am unwilling to wait.

Thank you all for the clarification.

My FB arrived at Back Roads Gold yesterday (1/11). We'll see how quickly they can fix and return it to me.

My FB arrived at Back Roads Gold yesterday (1/11). We'll see how quickly they can fix and return it to me.

It shipped today (1/15) = four day turnaround time to replace a short spring with the correct-sized one, and retouch some poorly applied nickel plating. $36.38 taxed and shipped ($4 shipping).

I'm following this Bruce as I may get one done in the future

I'll post my impressions when it arrives. Appearance is secondary to function: this razor was already replated prior to being sent. The key will be the knob staying tightened after the final quarter-turn (which it did prior to being sent out to the first replater).

I had the razor in my hands 8 days after taking it to the Post Office. BackRoadsGold charged me $30 ($36 after taxes and shipping) to replace the spring with the correct-sized one, clean, and replate where the first replater's finish was flaking off. I am very pleased with the service: Chris kept me informed throughout the process. BackRoadsGold will be getting my business from this point forward.

This is what came in the package. The soap is excellent.

WOW! That is amazing! And very affordable! I have a few razors in need of some repair and replate! I just might check these guys out!

I wrote a whole thread about Rust Boy on that other forum. Long story short, Capt. Murphy and Chris at Razor Plate took a completely dead, rusted over Fat Boy and restored him to near perfect condition.

Here's the before picture:

And here's the after:

Yes, that's the same razor. And it still looks as good today as it did then and its been almost three years. You can't go wrong with those two skilled craftsman. They're busy but they're worth the wait.

The Katrina Razor!!!

That looks great Bruce! I’ll have to remember them for when it comes time to do my E2.

I think they'll be getting my C-1 Red Tip, my birth razor. I had it replated in rhodium, but I did a crummy job on the red knob, and the model paint is rubbing off. Perhaps they have a more permanent solution.
