Gillette Fatboy Restoration

Well, I was thinking of getting a new razor but can't decide on which one to get...so I am thinking of sending my Fatboy off to a spa.

Has anyone sent one off before?
If so, where did you send it?
Would you recommend doing it?

Please post pictures if you have some.

Thanks

I need to send my Fatboy out as well. Not sure if it’s able to be salvaged as it has a bent bar. My sister actually recommended Northshorerazors.com. She sent a lady Gillette there to be refinished and said she had a great experience with them.

Jay at Delta Echo does amazing work (Did a Slim for me)but be prepared to wait with little if any communication including delays. My next will be trying North Shore or Back Roads Gold

I sent mine to Jay at Delta Echo. He did an amazing job but be prepared to wait 8-10 weeks and not have very much info passed on in the mix

Following along as I would like to send a my grandpa's slim off to the spa

I have only used Captian Murphy a VintageRazorRepair@gmail.com. Cap is a military man and is often deployed so you may have to wait.

Thanks guys.
Anyone have any pictures of the final product they can post?

i looked at delta echo online and it looks, as far as I could tell, that they don’t do custom colors anymore. The rear 4 or 5 preset configurations that you can choose from.
For the money I would like to customize it. So maybe north shore.

I hadn’t heard of back roads gold before. Will take a look at the site.

Thanks guys. Would love to hear about more experiences from people.

Mine (Delta Echo) was a Cubano Slim and his pics show better then mine. If you can get a response to an email (he's busy is the issue) he DOES do custom colors of your choice as far as I know, unless he changed that recent;y.

I wrote a whole thread about Rust Boy on that other forum. Long story short, Capt. Murphy and Chris at Razor Plate took a completely dead, rusted over Fat Boy and restored him to near perfect condition.

Here's the before picture:

And here's the after:

Yes, that's the same razor. And it still looks as good today as it did then and its been almost three years. You can't go wrong with those two skilled craftsman. They're busy but they're worth the wait.

Yep I have a picture and I haven’t had mine done maybe 6 months but he did custom color mine. There is an option to go two color and then he contacted me as to what color scheme I had in my head.

meet the Ghosttown Fatboy

Sportshaving took my '38 Sheraton, replated it in 18K gold, and had it in the mail back to me in 24 days.
I had bad experiences with everyone's favorite replater (Chris). He did a great job on a FB replate, but ever since it does not stay tightened. I didn't dare send it back to him for adjustment, as it took months to complete the replate.

Would someone please send the Captain's address to me? I want him to fix the FB so I can enjoy using it again. Thanks.

Oh the famous Rust boy!!! Glad to hear he is still going strong!

Rust Boy is a trooper. So glad he got a new outlook on life. And he's a joy to use. Proof positive that Gillette made some good quality stuff back in the day.

That’s amazing! Definitely thinking about the Birthday Razor getting the treatment.

The Captain sent an email stating he no longer works on super adjustables, which I presume includes FBs. Anyone have suggestions of a trustworthy razor mechanic that doesn't take forever and a day?

Super Adjustables are a model unto themselves. They have a lot of aluminum parts and may be more vulnerable to corrosion. I would imagine that may be why the Captain dislikes them. But I have never talked to him though.
