Chad Uses BAD blades!

Just caught up Chad. You covered 2 blades that I was really looking forward to. The Ladas Super Stainless and the Kai. I wasn't surprised with your opinion on the Ladas as I'm a big fan and actually used that for One Blade February. It just works for me. As for the Kai, I've always been a fan of those as well, but simply based on the price I've stayed away from buying them in bulk. I think that alone is worth the Bad rating as most wouldn't want to spend the money for 100 packs of them.

^^^^Perfect example Chad that people are benefiting from the series. It just take a bit sometimes to get to the one they're watching for a review on. Good job (y)

Volume 82 Perma Sharp Use 1

Well today a well loved blade got called up. This is a blade that many use, and gets great reviews. These blades are made in Russia by Gillette. Gillette acquired them in 2003 and moved production from Turkey to Russia. These are stainless steel blades and considered very sharp but smooth.

My shave went better than expected. I have been touting treated blades lately stating I prefer them with a coating while this is true there are obviously outliers and this might be an example of that. I found the shave exceptional and received a wonderful BBS result in 2.5 passes.

Pricing:

Amazon: $19.90 for 100 pack. .20 cents per blade
West Coast Shaving: $30 for 100 pack. .30 cents per blade
Maggards: $19 for 100 pack. .19 cents per blade
Italian Barber: N/A

So as you can see a little bit on the pricier side. But in line with other Gillette DE blades.

Volume 83 Perma Sharp Use 2

Well today was use 2 with the Perma Sharp and I used it in an aggressive razor. And I had very high expectations but sadly it did not deliver. The shave was definitely NOT as smooth as I would have like it at all. Plenty sharp and I did get a great shave, but at times it felt like scraping. I attribute that to the lack of coating on the blade. No surprise but I am thinking the best blade combo out there for all razors is a good sharp blade with a nice coating to assist in smoothness while shaving. This blade performed wonderfully in a mild razor and I could see myself picking some up for just that scenario. But because of that it does not get a 100 pack rating. I rate the Perma Sharp as GOOD. But it did take the #1 spot in the good category.

RATING SYSTEM
TRASH: Can't get a good shave. This blade is horrible. Never use again.
BAD: A bad blade but technically still got a serviceable shave, but have no desire to use the blade again.
GOOD: It was good enough that if I have another blade I wouldn't hesitate to use it.
100PACK: This blade was good enough to warrant stocking up!

Volume 84 Chroma Diamant Use 1

Alright well here we go. A German blade on deck today. These are a brand by Feintechnik. What is interesting about this blade is that Harry's purchased the plant a couple years back. SO Harry's now makes their carts in this German factory. And some DE blades come out of this plant. This blade is a Stainless Steel Blade, no coatings. I have used these blades in the past and got good results. But my opinion on blades has changed since doing this series. And well it shows. This blade did not live up to my expectations from previous experiences. Just not as smooth or sharp as I remember. And now I wonder if perhaps quality has gone down since Harry's bought them. The shave was just rough. I am going to try it in the Game Changer tomorrow to see if it performs a bit better. Because right now it is bordering on top of the bad category or bottom of the good category.

So as to pricing the sites I look at they are only at Amazon and Italian Barber.

Amazon: 200 blades for $26.95 so roughly .13 cents per blade
Italian Barber: 100 blades for $19.99 about .20 cents per blade

I'll be honest I remember the price being lower too.

Anyways here's the video

Interesting about Harry’s buying the plant! I’ve always seen in their ads where they bought “a plant” so this must be it!

Good video Chad!

Volume 85 Croma Diamant Use 2

Well today was the second shave with this blade and I loaded it in the Game Changer .84. The shave left a lot to be desired, while yes smoother today it just isn't that sharp of a blade, which leads to that scraping feeling instead of the slicing feeling that we want if that makes sense. It can give a nice shave though, you just have to go slower than I would like in order to compensate. Maybe a good blade for someone brand new to DE shaving?

With all that said though I have no choice to give this blade a bad ranking. There are so many better blades out there.

Volume 87 Treet Silver Use 1

Well here we go. Finally back behind the camera. Today on the bad blade series is the Treet Silver Carbon Steel blade from Pakistan. People state that these are very mild and some state rough. If you want to know more about Treet you can go to my previous entry on this company.

This shave today started out pretty rough for the first couple strokes but by the second pass it had smoothed out and actually did alright.

Cost on these blades is all over the place:

Amazon 200 at $22.99 roughly .22 cents per blade
Maggards 10 at $1.75 about .17 cents per blade
WCS 100 at $14.50 about .14 cents per blade
Italian Barber 200 at $9.99 about .05 per blade (ON SALE)

The only carbon steel blades I KNOW I have used were the GEM single edge. There aren’t a lot of options in that realm but I had heard some saying the carbon steel version (which is supposed to be available as the CVS store brand ...but the package says nothing either way). Yes...carbon steel absolutely will/does rust with very little effort. I really can’t say the blades felt substantially different but the tendency to rust more quickly is a reason I might avoid them. ...on the other hand I suspect the old carbon steel blades may be more easily sharpened or honed using those fancy old Stropper/hone things.

I agree @CBLindsay is better than @Cvargo and @HandleBarberDave at something...
