My ark is a Dan's stone but i got it from a reseller looking to reduce stock. the price was onlu marginally better but it was enough of a savings to make me feel good. Still a new and original Dan's ark, i know better than to try unproven sources.

Roger that.

Great shave and read Chris!

Just wondering do you used an oil on your ark before the water? If so what oil do you use?

I am still playing with the different lubricant options. When i use oil I like to use Oleic Acid, it's super slick and a perfect, light, consistency. I have had good results with Oleic Acid. I recently used some glycerin and enjoyed the way the stone worked and felt. I think glycerin by itself is going to end up being too thick. I have also use Dawn dish soap. Mixing Dawn and glycerin doesn't work but i haven't tried mixing oleic acid and glycerin.

On my Welsh slate i will often use oleic acid and i love the results. If you buy oleic acid you should get it from a lab supply store, 4 ounces for less than $10 and it will last forever.

Straight Shave #824

  • Rubberset 400 TGN finest badger
  • L&L Bandwagon
  • Genco DeRoma
  • Pinaud Clubman
Again, the L&L soap hits on all cylinders. This batch was one of the last made before they changed names but I assume it is the very same stuff that is sold now. Bandwagon is a great barbershop scent, maybe a little on the lighter side but not at all weak. I load the soap by squeezing out the excess water from my soaked brush, letting the water sit briefly then dumping the water back into my little bowl. The film of water that remains is enough to facilitate a wicked thick load and the poured off water serves as a source for more water to build the lather. If i were to know L&L for anything it would be that it is so fun to load that i end up loading too much AND lathering on the face feels so nice i never want to stop.

The DeRoma was touched up on the Ark (before it was "conditioned"). The edge was definitely sharp but again, it wasn't magical. I suspect the edges from the ark need a settle in period. I will try the ark again now that it is more conditioned, perhaps the results will be just that much better. Tomorrows razor is one i did with a coticule slurry on Ark before finishing on glycerin...

The shave was a BBS with no injury so i count today as a win.

Great read Chris! Bandwagon jumped up to one of my favorite barbershop scents after first use along with WSP and Fine AB. To ward off the fanatics...GTB is in a class of its own...lol

Great shave Chris. As systematic as you seem to be, I bet you will have your optimal lubricant figured out soon.

Straight Shave 825

  • WD24mm Silvertip
  • CBL Cream (batch42518) "Black Rose Oud"
  • Case 5/8
  • Alpa Kariat
Another Sx Ark honed razor and another batch of CBL cream soap...
The Case 5/8 was recently honed and seemed to be doing ok before i took it to the Ark. I used a bit of Coticule slurry for a short bit then rinsed and went to glycerin. I finished on a diamond pasted cotton strop then wen tot leather. The result was an edge that was KILLING the HHT and topping hair well above the skin. The blade felt a little different than i was expecting, seeming to be a little harsh during the first pass. From the second pass on the blade felt wonderful!

The CBL cream used this morning is a special one. I made as large a batch as I could fit in my pot and used all the tricks I have learned from the smaller tests. The little bit I used this morning had a measure of fragrance oil added but the rest of the batch is as of yet unscented. I have to say, this stuff is pretty darned good. Easy to load (its a cream) and super easy to lather. It takes on a good amount of water but requires very little to be slick. It is a creamy and somewhat dense lather that feels great on the face. The shave slickness is great and it has fantastic residual slickness. It rinses away clean but takes a few splashes to do so and it leaves a wonderful feel on the face. Good stuff.

I laid down a pretty simple 3 pass shave with some water only clean up and got a very comfortable BBS. I expected the alum to provide some feedback because of the harsh first pass but i got NONE. In fact, the alum glided over my skin as if it were glass. I am sitting here 6 hours post shave and i feel as smooth as my rear end felt the day I was born ...and I smell good too.

This Black Rose Oud scent is definitely going to be found in more soaps. I think my wife is going to want her own tub of this fantastic cream.

I saw the scent of the soap and an "Ooooo ooh my!" involuntarily came out...great shave. Sounds like it was a ninja shave

Great read and shave Chris!

Oooooo a new CBL formalization and Oud scent....I'm intrigued!

I am with the group saying that you had me with the scent. But that performance sounds amazing too. Great job on the cream.

I am a DE shaver, but I like reading you guys entries with the SR kits. The prep and maintenance for a shave is intriguing. Sometimes followed up with phenomenal pics.

Adding to that, making your own products, that is just outstanding! Great read, thanks.

I’m so far behind! All I can say is great stuff! I’ll keep trying to keep up or start thumbing up!

Excellent shave and read, Chris. Nice job on the Arkie as well. I have shaved with the cream you sent me, and was extremely impressed. It’s great stuff.
