Ok, now it’s time for the Wizard’s choice.
First off, thanks to all who posted today, I think you all embraced the spirit of the day and in some cases introduced me to some very new and interesting stuff!
My hot takes on your submissions:
A. Frank Zappa - Approximate
This was a cool song in that it is just a concept for jamming and it leaves it to the players to work it out. Reminds me of some of the ideas being floated around by the mid century composers that then got sort of adopted by the minimalists.
B. Beck - Loser
“In the time of chimpanzees I was a monkey”. What else can you say?
My other WTF is going on with the lyrics song is probably this one from Talking Heads
C. Weird Al Yankovich - Eat It
A great song because MJ was such a talent (or, maybe it’s MJ who stole it from Weird Al, if you want to believe the recent biopic). I wouldn’t say that the song is particularly weird, but yeah that movie certainly went to unexpected places.
D. *not a call* 2NU - Ponderous
Spoken word can be strange and catchy. I could see myself coming back to this one in the future.
E. Arlo Guthrie - Motorcycle Song
A fun song. Reminds me a bit of this Bob Dylan tune (probably as a result of the folk + strange fever dream type lyrics; except Dylan’s song is so silly he cracks himself up on the first take and has to start again; bless the producer who kept it all on the record)
F. The Doors - The Soft Parade
I’m high on life, have not and do not use mind altering drugs; but maybe now I think I have after hearing this!
So my pick for the day is going to have to go to
@Spider
Love Beck and this song was part of my growing up radio recollections.
Congratulations and please make your bonus call by 0800 Eastern tomorrow.
See everybody tomorrow!
