Ok, bingo players.....I have a minor issue. The computer system I use at work, where I've stored all of the bingo cards, all of the bingo calls and all of the Christmas trivia has been completely compromised. Early this morning, the company I work for got attacked by a ransomware virus and our system is completely offline at the moment. My plan was to send out cards on Friday and to start the game on Monday. As of this moment, that plan is on hold. Our IT guy, who is about to implode, is trying to get us back online but that may take some time. I will, hopefully, have an update soon. Sorry about this.

What, You didn't keep a backup? Simple, Just start over on your home computer. Takes what, 20 minutes to build cards and call list? Easy Peasy. You got this!

Did you tell him this was for something important - like our Bingo Game? Sheesh!

I'm sure you'll get it worked out. I mean things happen. It is unfortunate that you didn't have a backup at home but hindsight's 20/20 right. Good luck and I know you'll get it going as soon as you can.

If I were a betting man I’d say this is what the post mortem will say in regards to the ransomware virus…….

Early this morning, the X Company IT department detected ransomware on our network. The attack was directed at our accounting department as well as some key HR systems. To prevent the spread of the virus, we had to shut down the entire enterprise. Upon performing our clean-up, we have traced the ransomware to a download from a bingo site. It appears said virus was embedded in some Bingo card picture files with labels such as NurseDave.jpg, Fenster.png, Spider.jpg. We must inform our employees that company assets are to be used for business purposes only and that the company claims 10% to all Bingo winnings.

Ok, which one of you hacked his computer to try to change the call order?
If we’re now hacking, I see we’ve upped our Bingo game to a whole new level - playing with pros now!

To quote Petey the IT dude from Clear and Present Danger:

I assume IT guys cringe watching "hacking" in movies like I do watching medical stuff.
My favorite cringes though are when they combine both medical and IT stuff in a bad hack (Since I did provide support for medical facilities at times when I was in the Army)……The epitome of bad hacks has got to be the movie Outbreak (based on the book The Hot Zone……it had it all. Now disclaimer: I actually met some of the doctors that the story is about and worked in the facility that is represented in the movie), I wish I had seen the movie with those doctors, because it unintentionally hilarious.

I saw the movie before I got stationed at the military facility where the main characters played. But you had an Army facility being guarded by Marines (like we need Gomer Pyle protecting our bacteria)…….retinal scanners to get between departments (let me tell you - this was the biggest bummer because I was expecting Star Trek - but the real deal for access control is really too depressing for this post 😂 Well the real story is much much more frightening as well).

Then you have a medical doctor that also happens to be a Medivac pilot on the side flying not a medivac helicopter but a scout helicopter….and finally, the fact that they were able isolate the virus and not develop a vaccine, but an IV distributed antidote in about 20 minutes time from just a vial of blood from a monkey……

Oh and you had a medical officer that had the authority to launch bombs - let alone ones to attack a US City. Top that!

I still maintain that the movie "Hackers" is the standard when learning about thwarting encryption and firewalls.

As a side note...who knew that Angelina Jolie would become a bigger star than Johnny Lee Miller?

You, my friend, win! I forgot all about that movie. And yes- I would never have imagined Angela Jolie would have turned out to be the star that she became based on that movie
