Best modern DE

GlazedBoker is doing a pass around again in the other neighborhood this time with the Rex Ambassador if anyone wanted to sign up. KJ, this would be a modern adjustable according to your description. I'm #2 in line and will do a review here as well.

Thanks for the plug Dave. Anyone here interested in trying out the Rex is more than welcome to sign up over at the other (Evil Empire?) if you’d like.

Now concerning the best modern DE, I can’t say much because I don’t happen to own some of the higher end or heavy hitters such as Timeless, Wolfman, Charcoal Goods and the like. The only upper end DE that I own is the Rex Ambassador Adjustable and a Blackbird SB. So, what I’m about to say here is just my personal experience with a particular razor that I’ve been using for the past couple of weeks that has given me just superb results. It has given me some of the best shaves from a safety razor that I have experienced in my shave journey.

A quick rundown of what I like in a razor. Blade feel, efficiency and relative smoothness. Doesn’t have to be buttery smooth, just not harsh. My more efficient Razors in my den are the Ikon Tech, the R41 Post 2011 (had a 2011 R41 but the cap post lost it’s coating and, well it was tossed into the shaving mortuary), PAA DOC EVO SS and the Kampfe Brothers Modern Brass Razor. All of these are efficient to very efficient at the cost of perhaps losing some smoothness with a step up required from the user in care to technique and touch. I get great shaves from all of them and they give me long lasting shaves rivaling some shaves from my straights.

What’s the razor? The Karve razor by CB. I must say Gents that this razor and shave system has gut punched me and has left my jaw clanging on the floor every time I use it. I had ordered a razor from Karve but it was delayed because of an increase in demand that was not expected by the small razor manufacturer. But, I got lucky about 3-4 weeks ago and purchased a kit from the b/s/t with the 3” handle that included both the C & D guard plates. Got in about 5-6 shaves with that set up that were excellent. Exceedingly smooth with good efficiency with minimal blade feel, a tad bit more with the D over the C guard. About a week and a half after purchasing that set, my order came in from Karve with the 3.5” handle and both E & F guard plates. Switched to that kit and it has been an amazing week and change with superb shaves that have left me speechless. Both offer a bump up in efficiency and blade feel yet, still stay relatively smooth and docile, especially on the F plate relative to the blade exposure and immense blade gap. Just amazing shaves one right after the other without sacrificing comfort or feel. That’s a tall order for any razor manufacturer to accomplish or attempt to achieve and I think, humbly that the Karve has meet that criteria. Fitment is precise, quality to machining specs are exacting and the overall presentation and feel of the product is top notch. Sure, it’s not as beautifully done as a Wolfman with it’s superb attention to detail and a polish that is second to none not to mention the amazing look and feel of the Timeless and Paradigm offerings that are modern works of art. But, what the Karve gives up in beauty aesthetically, it more than makes up for in form and function.

What I’m saying here is that it is a superb shaving system that delivers results comparable to the higher end razors, at least to those in my shave den. And the kicker? The price of admission is significantly lower than that of the other razors mentioned above. It kicked all their rear ends and took their lunch money when it comes to the $$$ to performance ratio.

I’m not saying it’s the best to date, just saying that in my den and shave tool regime, it’s making a strong case for itself in being the go to razor for whatever and whenever a shave is required whether it’s daily or after a couple days or more of growth. It’s a hell of a performer, hands down...

Gus, nice write up. My Karve with C and D plate is out on loan for now and looks like I need to get an E to try now.............

As usual, I agree with Gus. For me, the Karve with a 3" handle and F plate is tough to beat.

Speaking of Gus, he recently introduced me to the Otto Kampfe razor, which he mentioned and which is, in my opinion, the best bargain modern razor available (that I've tried). The Fatip piccolo used to hold that position for me, but I've only used the older version, which I understand is no longer available. Gus loaned me his Kampfe, which is surprisingly efficient, for how smoothly it shaves. With a $25 price tag, and a brass top cap, it's hard to beat.

For me the best moderns I have are:
-Karve CB
-Rockwell 6s/c
-Parker Variant
-Rex Ambassador

But I haven't tried Timeless, ATT, Charcoal Goods, Raw Shaving, Paradigm, etc....

Yay, zombie threads.

Since it has been resurrected, I guess I will put in my $0.02 since I didn't see it the first time.

I have a Rockwell 6c that is a great shaver.
I own several Merkurs. All of them are great.
Parker makes great razors. I own a Parker 22r, 87r, and 99r (all TTOs).
The RazoRock MJ-90 is great. It is an EJ clone with an aluminum head and a titanium handle. It does have a second base plate, the "A" plate that is a bit more aggressive than the standard plate.
The Supply Single Edge is a killer Injector. It comes by default with a fairly mild (the "two dot") plate. The "one dot" and "three dot" plates are available as optional accessories. The dots are a measure of aggression. It is definitely worth its very reasonable cost.
The Fatip Piccolo is fabulous and cheap.
The Colonial Razors General is one of the best SEs that I have ever used.
The Muhle R41 is a really good shaver also.

I can't wait to try my RazoRock Game Changer.

I would like to try the Phoenix DOC/RazoRock SLOC, Timeless, Karve, and Rex Ambassador, as well as the ATT and Blackland razors.

I think part of the problem that KJ is going to run into is that "razor systems" are very popular these days. I guess we just like to have lots of options in this hobby. It is nice than many of these systems are offered with just a single plate, but that requires research. If razor systems are to be avoided I guess go for the Rex Ambassador, another Merkur, Fatip, Muhle, or Parker.

There are also funky things out there like the OneBlade.

@spider
how did the moderns work out for you?
i think I want to buy a new daily driver this Christmas season.
I also use a Merkur 34C daily but it isn’t as efficient as I would like. Three passes plus some buffing is required.

Bob, the 34C is perfect for me. Effortless and great shaves. My goal was to see if there was anything better. My results so far have fallen into two camps:

#1, those razors that work just as well for me as the 34C. That’d be the Rockwell 6S and the RR Game Changer. I like mild razors that give mindless shaves that I don’t have to pay attention to angle in order to get a good shave, without causing harm. These two fit the bill. But they are both heavier, and while I do kind of like the weight. I think I prefer the 34C. Although, that has yet to be proven, because I haven’t gone back to the 34C yet, since I started. And I still have yet to test out my 6C.

#2 is all the razors that were just too aggressive for me, and I just did not enjoy them because they were rough and uncomfortable. Karve, Timeless, And Rockwell Model T. Now with the Karve and Timeless I did not like the plates/configurations that I was given to try and there are others out there that are milder, so given the chance maybe those would be to my liking.

Bottom line, I’ve found nothing, no matter the cost, that I think gives me a better shave than my cheap 34C.

thats good to hear. Thank you for sharing. Maybe I will put some money into software instead.
Sure would like some new hardware though. Haha

\nSure would like some new hardware though. Haha
\nYMMV. If something appeals to you, go for it. I would still like to try the other configs of the Karve and Timeless.\n\nAnd, there’s still one more razor out there that I will be getting soon.

\n\nmay I ask which one?
\nNot saying until after I get it. Will likely purchase after Christmas. I’m expecting a couple gift cards. But it’s not a DE (forgot this was DE specific when I said that).

Well, you could always give the Merkur 38c a try. The longer handle changes the shave but it still has the Merkur head that you like...

That is, if you are still looking for more variety.

Im not necessarily looking for variety. Just wondering if anything will give me a better shave. Not sure a longer handle would do anything for me, because I choke up on a razor and hold it by the neck, rather than the end.

After everything, I think the next DE razor I want to get, that I think would possibly be an improvement would be the Merkur Progress (but really want the Mergress). Seems like it’d be the same head as the 34C, but the added benefit of being adjustable to really dial it in. I’ve been wanting it forever, but always thought it cost too much. Now, in this new era of Artisan Razors, it seems much more reasonable.

I stayed away from this thread only because I could see it would be a can of worms. Now that things have shaken out a bit (and after shaving with it last night) I have to highly recommend the new RR Mamba 70. The original Mamba was one of those razors that was so smooth that you had to check to see if you loaded a blade. I always got a two pass BBS without feeling anything, and dialing in the angle was totally brainless. The Mamba 70 retains that "did I forget to load a blade" feel to it, but you now get a BBS with one pass plus touch up. RR has them in stock now and most aren't looking at it because they are all waiting for the Game Changer, which frankly did not change any game for me except to add rougher shave without being more efficient than the original Mamba.

Interesting. Never heard of the Mamba before. My biggest problem with RR razors, is that I don’t like the handles. I especially dislike long handles and that’s the only option on the 70.

The original Mamba is more mild than the GC .68 if you can imagine, though some would argue the efficiency according to other threads. Known for its silent cutting and good head shaves.

I haven't tried a whole lot of modern razors, but I have tried the Timeless, a few off brand TTO things like the Wishi, a Futur, and an ATT. I own a Tech2, a couple oddball RR heads, a knockoff of the R41, and a Dandy Shave closed comb.
The Dandy shave is the best one I've tried. Even better than most all the vintages I've tried. For me of course, but it give me an effortless thoughtless excellent shave every time I use it.

I have tried a few modern razors, RR Game Changer both plates, SS mamba Wunderbar, Karve cde, ATT s2, Paradigm Ti ll, Timeless ss 68 and Titanium 95. There may be a few others I'm forgetting but with out a doubt the Timeless Ti95 is far and away my favorite razor ever. I like ridged razors and the Ti95 fits the bill. It is very efficient and super smooth, I am prone to bumps on my neck and the Ti95 very rarely gives me any. I am actively trying to get a Wolfman to see how I like it but that has been like trying to catch a unicorn.
Happy shaves

I on the other hand am quite the opposite of KJ in the fact that I like a tad more aggressive razors rather than mild. My favorite Razor system is the Rockwell 6c, modern adjustable its kind of a tie atm between the Parker Variant and the Rockwell Model T, vintage adjustable Gillette Fatboy by a mile, and my favorite tech type razor is my Fatip Piccolo Special Edition. I have several others but that is my favorite ones
