Bay Rum Comparison

I had a chance to pick up some Mike's Bay Rum (based on a heads up from a poster in a sabbatical thread). This is a very nice bay rum made with essential oils. Unfortunately, it is seldom available. I shaved with Long Rifle Bay Rhum then Mike's, doing a back to back comparison. Long Rifle is a beautifully scented soap with a hint of lime and I originally bought it when it was recommended on a different forum by @GearNoir . Mike's has "Spicy bay leaf combined with bergamot and a dab of vanilla." It was obvious to me that Mike's use of essential oil gives it a step up over soaps which use fragrance oil like Long Rifle. I still like Long Rifle but Mike's is on a different level--it is the real deal with the spicy scent of the real bay leaves coming through. For a moment there, I felt like I needed to put on an eye patch then I realized that, with only one eye, I might cut myself with my sabre.

I don’t get big into bay rum soaps. Never had the urge, I just paired up other soaps with my BR aftershaves.

But I do hear Mystic Water’s Bay Rum being recommended often.

To be honest...I haven't used a lot of Bay Rum soaps. I have several bay rum aftershaves and love them all! I have Stirling Bay Rum that I acquired from TJ @DocHoliday0831 and really like that one a good bit. I used the Olagalla Bay Rum Soap...but that was presently average.

I'm like Don in having several Bay Rum Splashes but just 1 soap I know of Turtleship Bay Rum. VERY light scent to me and probably on it's way out eventually.

I don’t really care a lot for Bay Rum scents. I have 2 bay rum ish splashes and one soap made by Ogallala that I enjoy just not a favorite scent.

I absolutely love this interpretation of Bay Rum as it is in complete contrast to the other ubiquitous Bay Rums that have a similar base scent of the dreaded clove which I have never really enjoyed. Michelle's version is quite lovely and unique and one of the best scents offered, in my opinion.

I find Long Rifle Bay Rhum to be too mild in strength for me. Strong scents are my preference. Any advice on stronger scented Bay Rum soaps?

The Bay Rum soap theme is next week so there might be some information gleamed from what members are using! It should be interesting!

I have generally not liked bay rum scents because of the prevalence of clove/cinnamon/nutmeg/etc. I am thinking I may try to find something that just has bay, rum, and lime (or some similar combination) to see if I like the underlying base. I used Citrus & Bay from Sudsy Soapery and kept going back and forth on whether I really liked the bay or whether it was giving me an unpleasant feeling in my stomach.

For AS, you should try Superior 70, is just straight bay rum and no clove.
I have to agree. Superior 70 is really good at just being bay rum. I am trying to think of a soap or cream that is light on the clove and just more bay rum. But honestly...I can't really think of any at the moment.

Many get a clove scent from straight bay leaf, even with no clove added. I personally like clove. :)
As mentioned, the Superior 70 would be a good test for that.
CRSW Bergamot and Bay is pretty light on the Bay.
Shannon's Bay Patchouli Grapefruit is a nice combo with more than just bay scent.
Beehive Bay Rum is a light and somewhat sweet.
Crown King/PAA Atomic Bay Rum has some floral elements to it as well.

I enjoy LongRifle's bay rhum but I would not jump to call it a traditional bay rum scent. I like the spicey bay leaf version of bay rum but it can come off as a winter scent at times while the LongRifle version strikes me as a more year round bay rum interpretation.

I like Mike's soap a lot, based on his other scents I would probably enjoy his bay rum.

I will have to see if I can get a sample of the Superior 70 early next January during the restock period. (Yes - I'm a part of the S-word.)
I also see that there is a PAA sample floating about that I will try to snag. That was another of the ones that I wanted to check out.

Mike's is what I'd call a traditional Bay Rum. A dry bay rum similar to Captain's Choice and that family.
I haven't tried LongRifle, but sounds good to me! When you say "spicey" are you meaning like cinnamon and such in the mix? VIBR spicy?
